Thanks for this list because I never heard of Unbroken so I'm definitely going to have to pick it up! Anyway, a few movies that I use for demos that you didn't mentioned are the following..
1) A Quiet Place:

Thanx TJ! I read that the ATMOS effects are great for that movie! (AQP) Of course the DVD is MUCH better audio quality than compressed internet signals, so I have to buy a nice Panasonic 4K DVD player.
Tunnel scene in The Great Wall is pretty nice from the above speakers.

Best movie to watch with your sound system is Godzilla (2014). The absolute best version to watch is the Blu Ray physical copy (not streaming) as the sound in physical movies are much higher quality. If your watch Godzilla paired with a Dobly Atmos sound system, you will immediately feel immersed in the earth shattering sound and the roars of Godzilla. I 100% absolutely recommend it, you won't be disappointed.
Okay, you just convinced me to get the original Bluray version of Godzilla and watch it again ☺️
Godzilla Vs. Kong!!! My wife,& I moved into our new place & I really got to know what our Sony STR-DH790 receiver can do. Along with Atmos speakers & 2 subwoofers both battle scenes between both monsters sound brutal. I strongly recommend this 4K as a reference disc. I totally agree with you about Blade Runner & Ready Player One.

Brutal is NOT the best word to use when referencing sound quality. "NO soup for you...NEXT!" :P
G vs K, is great for loud bass & effects. It sounds good. However, I wouldn't say it's reference. The audio engineering & sound design isn't quite up to the reference standard (it is slightly mid bass & mid treble heavy). It's still a must have for demos.
The series "The Expanse" is totally amazing for Dolby Atmos. You won't be disappointed!!!

It's on Amazon Prime folks, at least where I live. Do it, it's the best gritty sci-fi series since Battlestar Galactica (2003).
Unbroken is great. Even the Blu-ray version has Atmos.
Blurays have Atmos? I was wondering because I thought only 4K has Atmos and Unbroken is only on Blu-ray, so how does he claim it's Atmos.... Thank you I'll do some more digging.
Yeah, a lot of 1080p movies have Atmos. It's been around longer than one would think. I think that Disney's BRAVE was the first movie to come with Atmos.
Great list. These are all on my list of demos as well. One of my top demos is the movie Gravity (2013). You need to get the Diamond Luxe edition for the TrueHD Atmos track. Well worth it, when the fire breaks out in the I.S.S. amazing... Along with her re-entry to earth, the shuttle breaking up and on fire, debris flying past. I hope it gets released in 4k one day.

The best "reference" atmos/dtsx movies are DUNE PART 1 & BLADERUNNER 2049. They are REFERENCE. They should be used to judge other movies.

Unbroken was dumb in the sense that the guys were just casually talking inside the bomber. It is freaking LOUD inside one of those.

I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy that particular movie clip. I have no personal experience with these types of aircrafts, so I must take your word on the fact that it seemed unrealistic that the characters were able to have a casual conversation inside a bomber.

Yes, that is correct. That's why I can only point out which movies I think have good Atmos sound, when watched on Bluray or similar.

... But my surround on my xbox and 7.1 settings sound the same as my theatre set up for dolby, i just have to pay for dolby, youtube definitely can replicate dolby. It sounds very close with atmos and spatial, only difference is polk vs bose, kenwood receiver on polk, onkyo on bose

Never heard of Unbroken, looks fantastic! I’m Atmos ready but the house I live in is rather old and the ceiling is a little dodgy to hang speakers from, I’m thinking of mounting on the wall above my screen. I just picked up a free KEF PSW2500, it’s old but compared to my last sub the KEF is unreal. Lately it developed a buzz, so I’m changing out all its capacitors, I’m no tech but I’am looking forward to resurrecting this beast!

Hello, it's the on-screen 'playback info' of the AV-Receiver that displays this on demand. No post editing done here, most Soundbars, TVs and AV-receivers have this option.

Yeah, you mean the scene within the first 2 minutes of the movie, right? Yes, that sounds awesome too. Great movie with awesome sound, but I still like the original ‘Blade Runner’ better. Seen that one so many times and on so many formats, from VHS to LaserDisc to DVD and now on Blu-Ray, just wish that I could have seen it once in the cinema.
I just watched the movie 'the ritual' and the low-frequency effects are phenomenal when coming through my rel subwoofers, sorry it's not mixed in atmoss but hey once one has seen all the worthwhile Atmos movies, it's time for one to open up ones horizons!

Question: are the Atmos Effects different between a Stream (prime f.e.) or an Ultra BD?
Hello and thank you for your positive feedback and question. Yes, via streaming the Atmos sound is delivered via compressed dolby digital plus. If you play an original or bluray rip, you are likely to get Atmos via Dolby True HD, which is uncompressed and should theoretically sound better. It all depends on the quality of the setup, though, if you can actually hear a difference.
Stream usualy use dolby digital or dolby digital +, not true HD

Hello Kiet Lu, unfortunately not. Do you prefer Auro-3D over Atmos? Unfortunately, none of the local theaters here in Switzerland offer Auro-3D, or even DTS:X, it's all Atmos.
Blase runner 2049 is also aviavable in AURO 3D.

With so much streaming now and days, do you get the same quality of sound from that platform? Or do you have to go old school with Blu-ray’s?
With streaming, you will only be able to get Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus. A Bluray, or a proper rip, will get you Dolby True HD with Atmos. With a good setup, Dolby True HD will sound much better.

I know focal makes some really good audiophile speakers...but do you really get that immersive experience feel with those small 3 inch upward firing drivers? Or for a small room... is enough... I mean the sound has to reach the ceiling and bounce back....
Hello Vitalie, I also have a Klipsch Reference Premier 5.1.2 speaker setup with downfiring speakers, and in direct comparison, the height effects with the Focal setup sound more diffused. This is not necessarily a bad thing since it still creates a very nice three-dimensional soundstage. The Atmos effects are definitely there, although it seems more like they are coming from above the screen instead of directly from above your head.
I would like to know what media are you using to watch these movies. I saw that you had an Nvidia Shield with Dolby TrueHD and one of your clips. Are you using a Plex server or actual DVDs or streaming? How are you getting Dolby TrueHD with your Nvidia Shield? I'm assuming it's not via streaming.
Hello and thank you for your question. That's correct, I mainly use the Shield to playback Bluray rips that I have stored on an externaldrive. I can also use a NAS for that, but I find that connecting a drive directly to the Shield is the most reliable option.
I'll control my desire to criticize and simply say this, Go get Top Gun, turn it up, and then ask yourself if this video is even close. There is no movie that best exploits the highest quality sound system than Top Gun.. Don't trust me, just try it.. This is just a little clarification in case your younger viewers may not know. I am referring the the original from 1986. Anybody that watches this bear with it because the dogfight later in the movie is amazing. Cheers.

Ready Player One isn't the best example, since it's a static (not object based) mix with only two actual height Channels in the mix.

I have only one of those movies and that is Ready Player One. I have to figure out how to get my atmos speakers working because I get a error message on my Yamaha receiver when I get atmos

Wev,e had plenty of evolving sound formats from stereo formats dolby surround .. Pro logic.. Dolby digital... Dts.... Dolby true HD... Dts x.. Dolby atmos. Next format will be dolby utmost sound not just coming from above but below your feet.. How awesome would that be 😊😊...

@@unies176 After reconsidering, I find the idea to be quite promising, and it wouldn't surprise me if something similar were to become available in the future.
In essence, it is not significantly different from sound emanating from above, and it could be effortlessly implemented through the use of either sound-reflecting speakers or dedicated speakers positioned beneath the seats.
@@YuriBrus they could I suppose place 2 microphones surface level such as in a train scene hearing the tracks below or in a elevator going down.. To be quite honest it's there the format but I think dolbyare hanging on to the format for now.. What do you think..

How do you display the video playback settings when you wach a movie. I noticed that you use a Shield?
The AV Receiver has the option to display that information.

I am sorry but that dolby atmos for home on a blueray is bs. You can't hardly here those atmos speakers doing anything. On a 2 hrs movie maybe you here 5 minutes of atmos is a scam. Is like a simulation atmos. With all the money we spend on a receiver with dolby atmos and a 4k players is not nearly of what we hear in the theaters. And a lot of those blueray that said dolby atmos you can't here no atmos at all😢😢. So if you buying a very expensive receiver thinking that you going to be amazed with atmos , think again.

Hello Erod, I would say that it's not as immersive as with real overhead speakers, still some soundbars do sound pretty good and even give you the impression of a 3D soundfield.
Couldn't test too much talking in between. Video would have been great with just an into then straight to movie scenes without you chipping in in between

You should buy the discs to experience the Atmos track, and use them as demo material to show off your setup to others 😉
