My dad taught me that 50 years ago. Works for nuts, bolts and spark plugs, and with sockets too!
My dad showed the paper towel to hold the nut trick in 1972, I was 15yrs old working on a 69 Mach 1 Mustang Dad an I were working on.
I use tape usually.
My dad showed me that in 1912 with a razor blade and a dandelion

The fact you can still get parts for that 60s Cat is testament to its awesome reliability.
I recently picked up some bearings for a 1936 Rd6 from the dealer.... not much else is available for stuff that old directly from any dealer. But there are a few warehouses that keep that a surprising inventory
If it was that reliable it wouldn't need those parts!

Every time you start up one of your vehicles your dog knows he/she wont be able to play with you and it shows as it walks away ,It shows how much the dogs love you.
Andrew, a year ago I knew nothing about track loaders, but after watching you and getting my own ideas, I bought my own CAT 955H last July and absolutely love it. @@rsdna9698 Some areas of youtube do better than others, financial channels for example make significantly more than most. But for most of Andrews youtube career he has not been raking in money. He has grown enough now where I am sure he is making a healthy amount, but it still won't be that impressive. He wasn't very big even two years ago so I don't think I would contribute youtube to much of his success.

I've been hesitating for quite some time to leave a comment, because I didn't know if, on these older videos, you would even see the comment, but I finally decided that I just had to say something. I love to watch your videos, because you remind me of ME when I was younger! I was never afraid to tackle a problem and find a resolution. I went to work for Sears as a service technician out of the Navy in 1969 and ended up taking every course they offered on everything that we repaired like washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, televisions, stereos, VCR's and even garage door openers! I'm certain your dad must be really proud of you, because I know I would be if you were my son!

So funny how chill he was when there was a whole fire in his engine. He was casually like, “is it gonna go out” haha!
Don't forget he was a volunteer fireman for several years. With that and his welding he has experience with fires. 🤭
That machine could have burnt to the ground at that point and he'd have been out $100 in wiring, and two days labor to fix it. Lol

The old Cat has a new lease on life... One click of the key start... Beauty... Might want to consider taking a piece of rubber and super glue it over the top of the starter and over the exposed wires... Helps some in keeping water out [dripping directly on it] and the connectors from rusting... Meaning less starter replacement...

One thing I can say about track loaders in general: they are the most UBIQUITOUS machines one can possibly have!
While they may not be 'ABSOLUTELY PERFECT' for EVERY POSSIBLE job, they're really quite GOOD at SO MANY jobs that if you just UTTERLY HAD to be limited to a SINGLE PIECE of equipment for a big job, THEY would be the ones MOST LIKELY to fill the most needs, to the greatest extent.
You can shave, rip, trench, load, lift, grade, haul and compact with them.
Again, not as perfectly as any one dedicated machine, but well enough that they can do ANY GIVEN one of those objectives, whereas some of the OTHERS are LIMITED in some manner or another.
And while I DO some day want more machines, I knew I HAD to start out with a track loader, simply because it was THE ONLY ONE MACHINE which I knew I could get the MAJORITY of my work done with.
I am sure other people will disagree with me on this, and no, before they say anything, I'm NOT going to bother arguing people about it.
I accept that we all have our own points of view on life, and lets just let it be an agreed upon disagreement if you believe otherwise, because even if you say anything about some other machine, or just how stupid, deranged or ignorant I am, I'm just not going to waste time arguing the point.

I agree. He has some decent land for using the equipment sitting in his yard. Makes it fun to watch him use it. I have a tractor I use in my yard but I have done all the work I needed it for so I'll sell it and use the money to buy a newer truck.

Dudes like andrew deserve this life. He has helped inumerous people find their way thru a bad spot on this equipment. I know he has helped me several times in a tough spot. I can appreciate all the time and effort that goes into these videos. Yea not so much editing or dramatization but the fact he brings the camera along when fixing shit. Frustrating enough to fix it much less make sure a camera is setup.

33:55 so glad to see you wearing eye protection while changing that oil. Just a few days ago I was changing oil as well and it splashed right in my eye. I was lucky not to get blinded or something by that. Learned my lesson for sure
Yeah not enough people take their hearing and eye protection seriously. Especially as a content creator it's important that he does. Another piece of advice my master carpenter uncle gave me is don't hit stuff with your hand (when he hits the wrench with his hand). That's the sort of thing that will add up over your lifetime. All of us in the trades will already be beat up enough.

If you want to fix the stiff top roller problem you can drain the heavy oil out overnight and refill it with some lower viscosity oil like 10W 40 or transmission fluid. The interior clearances on a new roller are small and they usually come prefilled with gear oil. This makes them resist movement. It is easy to get a flat spot worn on a new top roller especially if dirt and mud gets packed around it because it is already difficult to turn due to the thick oil they use. Top rollers should come prefilled with a lighter viscosity oil.

Hopefully he keeps the loader bucket position bushings lubed if one fails with a load it will tear up some metal. I'd never make money with equipment I'm too picky if something has some wear, wobble or play it gets replaced

Your dog is so cute. He just watches intently as you break the bolts loose for the idler pulley. Then later when you are hammering on the bucket and it’s ringing, he says he is OUTTA here!!! Haha. I remember working on things like your old dozer, but farm equipment. It was always so very satisfying when you are done and start using it again! It does take a lot of work once in a while, but then you don’t have to do it for a very long time, or again even.
Your shop all completed really is amazing!! We are doing a smaller, much smaller, project with sea containers on some land shared by 3 of us. It will be a hang out/shop/storage. 2 sides opposite will be 2x 20 ft long 8.5 ft high containers set on concrete piers and cabled down to rebar in the concrete. (We get huge winds.) the back will be a 40 ft container set inside corner to inside corner so both containers can still be opened. Ther will be a steel plate welded to close those gaps and tie the containers together. The front will be filled with a wooden stick built front. We bought a commercially produced roof kit that is vaulted in the middle with a fabric roof that is stretched over. It will have 2 16 x 8 ft doors on the front and we will use it to store sxs and 4x4 toys. The containers themselves will be used as a shop, bunk house, lounge and storage, all lockable and secure, it will be warm inside the containers, but the center 40 x 40 will be 3 season use generally, but sleds can be stored in the winter. Like I said, nothing as big or elaborate as your Garage Mahal!!! It will do us well enough though.

Hey andrew, great video and a little tip. A few years ago my Dad decided to change out most all the seats on pretty much every piece of equipment we had on the farm. Before installing the seats, on the backs of all the seats and arm rests he sealed all of the wood with penetrating sealant. Really should make the seats last a lot longer if you're not too rough on the fabric.

This is a 955 Shovel Dozer!! this was the everything machine BEFORE excavators. I ran this same model for years. yours is in great shape for how old it is. BTW there are pins that come out or the radiator shroud to hold the arms up (yours are missing) so you can work on the engine.

Hi Andrew, I noticed while watching your video that you run this machine with a very flat bucket, actually it’s about where the bucket leveler kicks out. You should dump the bucket forward so you can almost see the teeth from your seat. This has a tendency to push the bucket down as you move forward, as well as putting pressure on the tracks. When the bucket is flat or partly closed the forward motion tries to lift the tracks which gives you less traction and easily lets the tracks spin. Like a rubber tired loader if you put pressure on the front tires while closing the bucket you won’t have tire spin and you can usually fill the bucket. You do nice work and you make good videos. @@mmi16 I had a mixed shepherd at my boatyard- Travelifts, tugs and trailers carrying boats up to 65', hydraulic cranes carrying sailboat masts, boom trucks and lots of cars- he was pretty good but I still had to get his attention once or twice a week. Andrew's dogs are exceptional.
