If that wheel is not seated it can come apart and hurt or kill you. Second. When adjusting that old style slack adjuster. That little sleeve that goes around the adjusting head. You push it in to adjust and turn the adjuster until that sleeve pops up. The adjuster will be flush with the top of the adjuster when it locks. I hope you follow what I’m saying and please don’t think that I’m a know it all. You might already know this. I’m sorry if you do. Some people don’t know. DOT stopped our truck (1989 Super Duty) at the dump. $500 dollar ticket because of not having a fire extinguisher. Could not move the truck till one was bought and delivered.
    After that, both little dump trucks left the state. We knew that we didn't have it in the budget to run the trucks. Switched to trailers and additional trips. We had 19 trailers when I last counted (Small trailers). We miss out on the bigger work, but that is okay.....no DOT and CDL to worry about.

    Andrew that slack adjuster on the front wheel needs to be cleaned and greased or replaced because that ring that's on that nut you adjusted is a spring loaded ring and when it's working correctly you're supposed to have to push it in in order to turn that adjustment nut, but you were able to turn it without pushing the ring in so the mating surfaces of the nut and ring could be stripped and rounded or full of dirt. That ring is supposed to keep that nut from backing off, and if it doesn't, then the slack adjusters back off quickly, not staying adjusted.

    Andrew, I just recently discovered your vids. They're awesome. LOVED the one where you're building the deck on top of your container house/fort and the camera work from the drone. Excellent video. Also really enjoyed the driveway renovation 1000 yards up the road from your house. I've been DOT'd 11 times in my 19 years of driving. In the day, the company I drove for ( I was a cement pump operator for a large natural gas production company in Western PA) gave $500 cash to any driver who PASSED a DOT inspection of any level. I've never NOT gotten that money, and think attitude has a lot to do with it. (and yes, you seem to have a great attitude, I'm not criticizing it) I remember one afternoon my supervisor followed me MOST of the way back to the shop, but veered off near his home and I went the last 10 miles without anyone behind me. Less than 3 miles from the shop was a pull off DOT used for inspections, and there was a trooper in there hitting the lights when he saw me. I had truck 18, the biggest piece of shit in the fleet. When the guy got to my window, I had all kinds of paperwork readily available and handed it to him, and he smiled handing most of it back. (weigh slips, acid manifests, etc. ) He did some initial paperwork, then came over and asked me to go through the lights. When he got to the back bumper, he had me step on the brakes. No brake lights. I was genuinely shocked. I'd pretripped the truck and they worked. I even made sure after the job before leaving location. He suggested turning the key on, I did, still no brake lights. He had me start the truck, still no brake lights. At this point, I was standing on the fuel tank, one foot in the cab, looking back to see his reaction. No brake lights, and I screamed "that mutherf______er"!!!!! He laughed and asked who? I told him about my super following me and never saying a word, now he's home sipping a cool one while I flunk my first DOT inspection. He came to the front of the truck, told me to sit tight, filled out my paperwork and handed it all back. Three miles from the shop. He told me to make sure I wrote it up, and get it fixed. I got $500 for that inspection, the dude laughed with me or AT me for about a half hour out of his day, and we parted ways. Now that I look back on that, it was the LAST DOT inspection I've every been in. Now I drive a water truck, nights usually, and never see DOT.

    I know the DOT can be a pain in the butt but we all know why they stop trucks, To keep the road safe for everyone. One thing I will say for safety sake is when you take a Dayton rim off don't take the lug nuts all the way off, Leave them on when you hit the wedges with a hammer to get them loose ! They are under a lot of pressure and will fly off and can hurt or kill someone when the nuts are off. So leave the nuts on when popping the wedges loose and save yourself a hospital bill. I need to get my old dump truck back on the road , But I know it will take a bunch of work to make it legal again. Keep up the great work and video's. Bandit

    Another cool video, thanks! I used to be in fire safety education. For a few dollars more, halon extinguishers are so much better and last longer. I have one that is now 12 years old and still at full pressure. Unlike ABC dry chemical extinguishers, they do not ruin everything they come in contact with, and there is no powder to cake-up over time. They literally suck the oxygen out of the air, stop the fire asap and don't damage all the surfaces they come in contact with. With an engine fire for example, you will save soo many components.
    Side note: before using a dry chemical extinguisher, smack it on the ground a couple times to loosen up the powder ensuring it will work. If the powder is caked-up inside, it will shoot out air instead of chemical.

I've been retired since 2010 now & quite frankly I don't miss dealing with the DOT over the many years, truth be told, most of the guys are decent folks & just doing their jobs with the occasional absolute PRICK to deal with... I still hold my class A license with motorcycle, doubles & tanker endorsements, but I let my Hazmet go years ago as well as the mandatory health card every ( 2 ) years here in VT...
    I have a good story about dealing with the NY DOT back in early 2008 on RT 4 east heading back towards Rutland empty, good thing they weren't set-up earlier in the day heading west towards a Glens Falls, NY papermill fully loaded at 120,000 pounds plus with pulp logs on a rusted tri-axle trailer... A story for another day perhaps!
    Excellent job going around the truck & making the needed repairs & adjustments & when DOT people see a well maintained truck, they tend to NOT look as hard, ( close ) on their walk arounds, most the time, NOT always however...
    Keep on trucking young man...
    Bill... :~)

    Great vids, but I was always taught if you change one wheel of a twin, you need to change both because of the tire height difference. The new tire will wear out quicker if fitted next to an old tire.

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 Před 4 lety +2

      While you are not incorrect, that is in ideal circumstances. The best case scenario is to plug and patch the existing tire and use it.
      The problem comes when a good tire with 3/4 tread left on it gets removed. If you alway replace both tires you would either need to collect a bunch of tires in order to hope to match them up eventually or discard the tire. Now discarding a commercial tire isn't like a car tire if the core is in good shape. They will give some money back if the core can be recapped.
      So that being said, you have to determine if the loss of the quicker tire wear is more or less expensive than the alternatives and if that expense justifies the hassles. In my experience, unless the tread depth is within 1 or 2 thousands of the legal depth (2 for drive and trailer axles and 4 thousands for steer axle) I will just replace a single tire. If the tread depth is within a couple thousandths (say 3 thousandths total on a drive axle) I will replace the entire axle. You have to also remember that a common brand name commercial tire is going to cost around 350 to 450 dollars new depending on your location.

      @@sumduma55 Hi, Yep, I understand the economics but surely it makes sense to change the two front steer tires and fit the fronts to the back. Chances are, the two fronts will have worn down at the same rate. Also, fully loaded, the new tire on the back is taking most of the load and could potentially get hot and blow out. I know I'm Mr. Doom and Gloom but I tend to look at safety first.

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 Před 4 lety +1

      @@martynbuzzing3327 I have never had an issue with a steer tire having more tread on one side. As for swapping them out, I would only put them on a trailer unless I had no choice for a temporary fix for a drive tire due to the tread pattern. But that may be a personal thing.
      As for mismatched tires on dual wheels, there is only a few thousandths difference in tire height. One tire will take more of the load but it wont be much more. In theory, if your tires are sized appropriate for the axle weight a single tire can hold the entire weight of the axle at reduced speeds.
      It isn't going to heat up and blow unless you are mixing tire sizes itself (different aspect ratios will result in different ride height under load). At least that is my experience in 40 plus years.
