Today I talk about why I joined the Air Force over the other branches of the US military. I talk about why I joined the Air Force over the Marines, Navy, Army, and Coast Guard. This video is my thoughts on why the Air Force was the best option for me and my life. When it comes to what military branch is the best to join, you have to decide that for yourself based on what you want and how you are as a person. What branch you should join is a big decision so you need to make sure you truly know if you want to join the Air Force, Marines, Navy, Army, or Coast Guard.

I'm 67. You are in your twenties. It won't matter what you did in your twenties when you are my age, but you will have transferable skills when you get out. Smart Kyle. Hang in there. You seem to be conflicted, but you are on the right path. Stay there and go all in, it will pay off in ways you don't understand right now, but will. Good luck!
Hey there. I’m 24 and I’m currently in the process to join the USAF. As of now, I’d like to make it a career or stay in for as long as I can. I already love how it keeps me in shape and how I permanently changed my eating habits. It can be difficult to change the way you eat living where I am located. I passed everything at MEPS but I’m waiting for my braces to come off and then I can start my career. What are some other suggestions you recommend? I’m going active duty and will finally be leaving Miami, FL. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I was in the AF from 95-99. I had every branch recruiter stop in the grocery store where I worked next door to the recruiter station but the AF. I had to pursue my AF recruiter as well. Glad I did by far best decision I ever made!!!
Why did yoy get out?
I am an Air Force veteran as well. Recruiters from every branch, except the Air Force would visit my high school and contact me over the phone. As WV Outdoorsman stated, I made the initial contact with my local AF recruiter. That was the best decision that I made in my life. I would have never imagined myself being in another branch of service.
AF rules. Better than any other branch. I was AF 80-83 E tech.
Went from active army to air force last year and my mind was blown to say the least. I went to the dfac for the first time and it was like a golden corral on a military base.

mac burger Isn't too far fetched. I know somebody at my base who's prior marines. As long as you fit the standards you're good
Uncle RayRay What're the standards, because when I tried googling it it basically said you'd have to have had a very rare and special MOS and even then it would be extremely rare for the Air Force to accept you. Looks like only the Army is most lenient on prior service from other branches.
mac burger I mean you'd probably get more information by asking a recruiter than you would me or the internet. But it isn't too far fetched. I personally had the fitness standards, body standards, and if you qualify for any of the jobs or opening that they have in mind when I said "standards".
I went in with my 3rd choice (Army). I tested for Navy and Air Force first and found that ALL the great schools that I was interested in were not available. I wasted time because the Air Force recruiter finally leveled with me after 2 weeks and said the ONLY thing open was security guard. Ridiculous. I finally (reluctantly) walked into the Army recruiter and took the test and found exactly what I wanted in a challenging school/training assignment and direct application to civilian employment. Check out the over 100 specialties in the Army. It is the largest military branch. For me, the Army was a very underrated branch. I had no idea they had so much choice. I received outstanding training and my later civilian career was all because of the Army. You just never know..
Sup, Im going to enlist in either the army or airforce as an e4. My gpa is too low for officer route at 2.6. My body is pretty broken down from working at fedex and lowes(doors/cabinets) so i plan on pursuing a non combative mos.
I know the airforce is like a corporation so id most likely be doing my job everyday right?

It amazes me that in watching your videos I see so many similarities in your and my experiences. And at the same time I see a lot of differences too. I too enlisted in the Air Force after talking to the recruiters from all the branches, and felt I was being better served by the Air Force than any of the other services. The Air force seemed to be more interested in helping me formulate a plan for my future, instead of just getting me to join their branch. I would love to be able to sit down with you and talk about our experiences in the Air Force sometime. A lot has changed since my time.
This answered so many questions that I couldn’t find answers to. Your situations sounds almost identical to mine. I’m meeting a recruiter to join the army but my parents want me to join the Air Force for better reasons and I’ve been fighting the decision, but now that I’ve done more research, and watching your vid, I’ve chosen that after I take my asvab and fitness test, I’ll contact a recruiter for the Air Force. Coleman Olivas Good luck to you. You'll be missing out on all the fun stuff the Army does like having a longer basic training, longer deployments (9-12 months Army vs 3-6 months Air Force), worse food, if you're not married then worse barracks with longer time to stay (I believe you can leave the barracks at E4 in AF vs E6 in the Army, though I could be wrong), going out to the field a whole lot more often and staying longer, possible working in the hot motorpool instead of actually doing your MOS more, having to get and keep track of TA-50 gear that you'll be fined heavily if you lose track of, smaller list of duty stations, worse duty stations, ruck marches, more difficult and mandatory PT (that's said to get worse soon with more soldiers having to do with while wearing their TA-50 gear) etc. In case you can't tell, I'm being sarcastic. Good luck.

The Air Force is the branch of the military where many of the young enlisted are from the suburbs and from middle and upper middle class backgrounds. Most of us grew up poor or working-class in my day and more rough around the edges. This was the late 1980’s. Since Desert Storm
ended, a lot of that changed. It’s the most entitled and complaining branch of the military. Nowadays you have E5’s with families living in nice large homes in the suburbs off base on the same level as officers below Colonel’s, when in my day they could afford a small run-down home or nice apartment at best! And dorm residents now have their own room and a kitchen, video game systems, Netflix, and of course, wireless internet, yet they’re still bored and unhappy with military life, even if they’re stationed overseas or in high energy urban areas like McCord, Travis, Lackland, MacDill, Peterson, or Langley with a lot to do for young people.
Okay, I need to quit preaching and realize I’m just a 50 year old geezer and easily old enough to be the parents of today’s SSgt’s and TSgt’s!
LOL! So you still have it, or have the option to have them. He never said that it was provided. The first time I had the privilege of being on an AB in the mid 90's (I was on funeral detail) I realized that the quality of life in the branches were way different. Now my son is seeking to join the Air Force and I'm proud and happy of his decision.

The whole thing about houses and what not is wrong, simply because again.. All the pay is the same, the pay is just better across the board in the military now.
CaptainsEyePatch I did a year long deployment with the Army in Afghanistan with 6 weeks of combat skills training beforehand. I don’t know what they do to them in boot camp, but you don’t have whiners and complainers like the Air Force is full of. Many lifers have no filter whatsoever and will push your buttons if you’re easy-going and if you let them.
I came from the trenches and was dirt poor and earned my way to the Air Force, and I'm only 23. So half of what you said is not true.
Interesting. I think I’ll go talk to AF recruiter. Like you, I also talked to the Army recruiter and took the test. Passed with a 79, 118 GT. I didn’t think I could qualify for the AF, but after testing I’m really leaning more towards AF and even more after this video.

Hey good luck man, some advice: stay out of trouble, it will only prolong and complicate the process, pay attention to math and specifically engineering classes (The engineering such as car work), and physics class. Those 3 will boost your afqt score exponentially. The most important thing is to make sure you keep good health, meaning your eyesight, weight, hearing etc. Learn if you havent already to be told what to do and follow instructions to the word, especially at meps.

I was a BMET in the AF. All my peers, and myself, got out and have done well.
Coast Guard has the best location. Marines have the worst location. Army is everywhere, basically IMO Air Force has the best barracks.
When I was 17 working at a grocery store a marine recruiter approached me when I was pushing carts and after talking for a few minutes he desperately wanted to exchange contact info and for me to meet with him formally at the recruiter office. Now I’m 21 and after hard thinking I decided to become an airman. I can’t even get ahold of my local recruiter and I think it’s hard for a reason! Wish me luck

What y’all end up doing?
When I was a navy nurse corp officer in Bagram 2012. I did notice the air force enlisted had very good living spaces next to our officer living spaces whereas the marines, army, and navy enlisted were assigned regular RLBs or tents. Some of the AF's deployments were around 4-6 months and were granted R&R, my battalion (joint marine/navy) we're only granted R&R if we had >270 days boots on ground. As much as we like to joke around on AF, they do have better living conditions and that's preferable and understandable.

Kyle I think there was a recent bill passed about the GI Bill is now called the " Forever GI Bill " . When I got out of the Air Force in ' 75 I had 10 years to use my GI Bill .

Under the threat of the draft in 1966, with an older brother in the Navy, I tested for the USAF and joined. My testing put me in the electronics field, working on the autopilots for the B-52 & KC-135! That turned out to give me a 44 year technical career with a large telephone company. Plus everything your other commenters said!

I was in the Air Force from 2002-2006. It was really good. I enjoyed it. Met tons of cool people and really becomes a family more than my own family was. I used the GI bill though not to its fullest admittedly. Training wasn’t too bad for me and I’ve always been a terrible long distance runner. I agree with the treatment, housing, etc. what stood out to me even deployed overseas, is that we always had the best food. I miss a lot of the foods they made.

I can speak to the truth of what he's saying about the living conditions on Air Force bases. I had been on some Army posts tdy and they weren't even close to the barracks I was assigned to on my first permanent party assignment.
Your story wouldn't be the same today, at least at my recruiting station. The doors are locked during open hours and you have to buzz in and state your business before entering any of the branch offices. Insane people making it harder for the rest of us to talk to a recruiter ftw.

I saw the Air Force base in Dover DE today it looked like a sweet base it looked almost like a resort just with fencing around it
In 1980 I wanted to drop out of school and join the marines, at 17 my parents refused to sign for me. This gave me time to actually explore the army/marines/navy/Air Force and I have to say the navy and Air Force offer the best jobs that relate to the civilian world. My neighbor who was drafted into the navy during Vietnam talked me out of joining the navy and I also had other friends and family who had served all told me join the Air Force. I served 12 years until a medical discharge in 1993, loved every minute of it, I served all over the world. My downfall was a 7 knee surgeries and a herniated disc in my back. My job sent me tdy every where and has been my chosen profession for 42 years now, what did I do ? I was a plumber, also went back to school for fire suppression tech/fire sprinkler tech. (All those aircraft hangers have some type of fire suppression) Great job and will get you well paid in the civilian sector, also your not locked into specific bases as your skill is needed at every base.

BTW Structural peeps are highly employable after retiring. There are very few of them compared to maintainers with AMT certs and few civilians get that kind of experience unless the are ancient Boeing etc workers. Enjoy your career.
Before I signed up, I narrowed it down to the Air Force or the Navy. My perception was that they would offer more/better tech schools. I assumed that the Army and Marines were looking for grunts. My assumptions may not have been accurate. For me, the tie breaker was that I did not want to end up with sea duty. Plus, being married I wanted to stay closer to home. I chose Air Force and got to take 8 months of tech school. I was able to use my training in the AF to get a great civilian job.
I had the exact same thought process, but I'm single and I wanted to travel so I chose Navy.
AF recruiter here. AF has best dorms and no roommates like the other branches. You have to go see a USAF only base if you don't believe it.

Now I'm gonna join air force, I've been talking to a recruiter. I know I gotta jump through all hoops to get in. Just because I want to join doesn't guarantee that I will get in. My Dad was a career Army man and he always told me if I wanted to join the military go with the Air Force because they had the best living quarters and the best food. After high school my best friend went into the Navy and I chose the Air Force. We both somehow ended up stationed in CA and were able to visit each other frequently. It was almost embarrassing how much better my living situation in the Air Force was over his in the Navy. I had my own private room with a bathroom, he shared a small 10X10 room with 3 other guys. My Air Force dining hall was open 24 hours a day and was like Dennys, get omelettes made to order or burgers and fries any time of the day. The Navy dining facility was open only certain hours and after that you were on your own.
I honestly don't care about living conditions. I'm currently deciding which branch to go to and I'm looking at things like educational/career benefits and opportunities, travel opportunities, each branch's special forces team, which branch has the best equipment/technology/budget spending, and overall reputation of the branch and how prestigious it is.
Personally, I believe the Air Force is what fits my personality the most. Also, by no means am I trying to insult the other branches, but from my understanding of what my mother has taught me, always chose what’s suits you best. Although I have a few Marine and Navy friends who tease or mock me about the “Chair Force” on the daily, I will always have it’s perks out of the rest. I can’t wait to earn my title as an airman!

Hey Kyle, was wondering your recommendation on this. I’m interested in becoming an officer in the USAF. A few months ago I applied online and was turned away because I didn’t mean the weight requirement. I’m about 6’3” and was an athlete in college, so I have a more muscular build. I run prob 8 miles a week, by no means over weight, but I guess to their standards I was. Now, I’m about 225 but I still think I’m a few pounds off the requirement. I’m physically fit, do about 300 push-ups a week, etc...Should I just go and see a recruiter in person? Would that help me begin the process vs getting turned away on the online app?

First of all I’d like to thank you for serving. I’ve brought up the idea of being open to joining the military to my parents and they really do not want me to join. I think they are scared I won’t do well and of the fact that I may not return, though I do not feel like that personally. I also think it’s because of their political viewpoints as well, but I’m pretty unbiased and of course you cannot have political opinions in the military which is actually great because I hear enough of it at home lol. Another obstacle I will have to face is possibly my anxiety and ADHD, but I do believe over the years they have faded away and I’m getting off my medication as I do not need it anymore. Also I do believe I was misdiagnosed with autism as a child (I was 7 when diagnosed) and I think it was my adhd, which was really bad when I was young. I have no problems interacting with people nor am I slow. I actually thrive with an organized routine and structure. I want to join the Air Force to serve this country and because I really don’t think college is for me (I’m a C student in High School) I also have been very interested in aviation since I was 4 years old as well. I absolutely love planes and helicopters and have always wanted to fly them and be a pilot. Another reason for me wanting to join the Air Force is because of the team work and bonding. I want to surround myself with good people, have discipline, and to be blunt I need to man up. I am going to talk to a recruiter and this video has really helped me out and you’ve earned a sub.
PsychMike Hopefully your medical history can't prevent you from joining. Definitely if you can join the military good and if you can get in Air Force specifically that's really great since you will have the best quality of life, from what many people have told me about the Air Force since I went in the Army. There is a lot you don't see online and don't find out about until it's too late.
On flying planes, keep in mind that most people in the Air Force don't actually fly. Only a small percentage of officers do. If you are able to enlist, you'll most likely be in some kind of clerical job which is why the Air Force is nicknamed "chair force."
You'll have to decide for yourself if that's better for you than being stuck out in the field or motorpool sweating your behind off like you would have to do in the infantry branches: Army and Marines.
I've heard of some Air Force people getting bored with that and wishing they could do the infantry stuff that the Army and Marines do, while I myself wish I could have been doing "chair force" stuff instead of going out to the field and the motorpool. Good luck

PsychMike hey man fellow senior here. I’m just wondering if you’ve gotten anymore info on enlisting with your medical history. I was on antidepressants for a while but have been off for over a year now and I feel better than ever. Im just nervous it’s gonna hold me back trying to get in
Vince Lac I’ve been considering the ROTC route. From what I’ve heard though, you need to be off of your anti depressants for a year (which you are) before you can be considered. The only thing holding you back is your fear of being rejected. I personally think you will be fine.

Thanks Kyle for your service. I subscribed to your videos a long time ago but to be honest I've not seen them in some time. Thank you for being honest yo others. I've have had family members in other branches of the services at the same time I was in the Air Force. Just drive onto other branches based and you can see the difference the minute you drive on base(Post). The building are clean, painted on Air Forces . Look at the equipment, from the military vehicles to Aircraft look at the appearance of planes. I must say the Navy seem to be the worst , look at the jets. It seems if it's not a ship , the heck with it. SORRY NAVY.
Kyle you're right about education, the Air Force pushes education I think more than the other branches. Maybe it's because the others are in the field more . ??? Don't know.
To me , I found a home in the Air force and as my family they did to. I was a Aircrew member so I was gone a lot . We were the only squadron in the Air Force that did what we did. And if there was anything going on the world we were there. During the Vietnam war we were airborne 24/7 with at least 2 planes . A north and south orbit. We were a AIRBORNE BATTLEFIELD COMMAND AND CONTROL CENTER. We were a Battlestaff. 13 guys and 5 guys in the front of the plane. There are some CZcams videos of us if you care to watch. ABCCC CLIP, AETACS I was in a EC-130E. 7th ACCS. There was us and AWACS or COMPASS CALL. But for us there was AWACS., NATO AWACS and ABCCC. There is no ABCCC we were replaced by JSTARS.

Great video but all the branches are not very similar. All very very very different in so many ways. Their all the military and pay the same. Similarities stop there. Pay for grade is the same yes but additional pay such as flight pay or haz fire pay could be considered. I agree with the rest. Thanks for posting.
In a way the army might be better if you’re coming in as an officer. You get promoted much faster and you get bah/bas right away. But just incase you go somewhere where it’s safer to live on base...

Have you found an answer elsewhere yet? I don't know how often the Air Force gets deployed compared to the Army. However I do know that the Army has the longest deployments of all the branches if you do get deployed.
Our deployments in the Army are a minimum of nine months long compared to the Air Force whose deployments are six months maximum. It was worse back when the Iraq/Afghanistan wars were worse. I don't know if Air Force back then was still six months (I've seen some people claim that Air Force only had to do just four months), but in Army it was common for soldiers at that point to do *FIFTEEN TO EIGHTEEN MONTH deployments* then come back for a year only to go back over to Iraq/Afghanistan for ANOTHER fifteen to eighteen months*
So your deployments will definitely be shorter in Air Force but I don't know how often you'd get deployed (I don't think you would be deploying every single year though).
Another thing about us in the Army is that we go to the field for anywhere from two weeks to a month (or longer) at a time. I believe that in Air Force, only security forces and a few others actually go to the field anything like Army does. Most people in Air Force won't go to the field as often or stay in the field as long (maybe like a week maximum) if they go to the field at all.
So unless you're security forces, you'd more than likely have more time with your family in the Air Force on active duty as opposed to the Army. Now if you get a maintenance/mechanics job in the AIr Force then you're probably be working much longer hours than other jobs, which would take time away from your dependents.
If you still have doubts then I'd recommend trying out Air Force reserves/guard instead of active duty. But bottom line is that overall, with a few major exceptions, the Air Force probably is the most accommodating branch of the military if you are on active duty and have dependents.

You get a point for not forgetting the Coast Guard is also a branch of the military.
Air Force sounds awesome but so does the navy mainly because I love the beach but I'm fairly certain i wouldn't like being out in the ocean.
You'll spend more time on the beach as a Marine than in the Navy.

Air Force treats there members well because it is imperative they have people reenlist. Air Force is a technical branch that requires well trained people. They need experienced people to reenlist. Good housing and dining facilities. The Navy is technical too and has a lot of aircraft but you will likely be pulling sea duty and all you have is a 6' X 4" cot that is your only personal space. Army and Marines are basically just grunts. You spend the majority of your enlistment digging a foxhole and then laying in it. No matter what guaranteed training you are offered you are still going to be a grunt for most of your time. Some people like that so that may be good for people who like to be outdoors and stay active. Your promotion rates are probably faster in the other branches for the first few pay grades but if you make it a career it usually levels out.
What job do you plan on getting when you get out?

THE AIR FORCE IS THE BEST-BRANCH TO JOIN WE HAD BETTER ACCOMMODATIONS BETTER FOOD AND BEDDING MUCH EASIER TO ADJUST TO AF LIFE BETTER PAY AND BEAFITS.....BUT HARDER TO GET IN AND TO STAY IN AT MY TIME..1966-1974

Not so. Many installations are joint bases now with same living conditions. And rank (pay) is faster in the Army.

Indecisive between joining the Navy or Air force ... one of the reason why I want to join the navy is mostly because travel and well to gain experience, but in the other hand I feel like Air force will also be a good choice because of all the great choices , especially the dorms , but I’ve heard they don’t travel a lot , any advice .? Please !!
In the Airforce certain jobs will get to travel a lot. So you just gotta do some research on which ones. (I would say look into the 1A jobs)
I joined the Air Force in 2003 to see the world and got stuck at Dover AFB, couldn't get out of there fast enough.
I knew guys who were sent to FE Warren and spent their entire time in stuck there. Trying to get a new assignment, overseas, even asking for Thule Greenland and go a big NO.
@@WootTootZoot Back in 1999, my first base was Malmstrom (Security forces), and one of the first things I did when I arrived in Montana was go down to the personnel office to change my dreamsheet to "Worldwide Remote Code 88". 5 months later, I received orders to Germany where I finished the remainder of my 4-year enlistment. I was at Malmstrom AFB for precisely 11 months. It amazes me how people simply don't understand how the AF assignment system works. Even at 18-years-old and largely wet-behind-the-ears, I knew how to work the system. lol
