  • Have you ever wondered about the future of your privacy?
A growing proportion of human activities, from social interactions to entertainment to shopping, are now mediated by digital devices and services, creating an unprecedented number of digital footprints that can be used to reveal our intimate traits, emotions, and predict future behavior. Given the progress in Artificial Intelligence and computing, how can we prepare users, the public, and ourselves for this coming reality, and ensure that privacy will not only be reserved for the privileged few?
    About Dr. Kosinski:
Dr. Kosinski is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, and is a leading authority on privacy risks, psychometrics, and psychological profiling. His research, which has spanned his tenure at Stanford, his previous work as the Deputy Director of the University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre, and a researcher at Microsoft Research has been covered in Bloomberg, CBS and the Economist, among other publications.

Democracy existed only in ancient Greek. We live in a republic. It means that "we" choose representatives which act according to their personal interests. Sometimes, their interests align with those of their voters, sometimes(most of the time) not. Most of the time voters don't even know what their representative is working on neither how it will affect their life.

I agree but, Prince said it best "Use the Matrix, don't let it use you".

@@siegfried19888 The problem with that is replacing the CEO's and politicians. You see, they have this pesky characteristic of seeking power, and wanting to stay in it once they get there. It isn't about being open. It's about the people with the more powerful computers using the power of information in ways that are not ultimately in the best interests of the people. And privacy is the way to counter that. Create as little information as possible, and obfuscate what you do create.

Very interesting informative and thought provoking talk. However do not agree with all the views expressed. We should not accept defeat on privacy so easily. There are many more aspects and consequences that were not addressed in the talk. Are you still you, if you know that everyone is watching you all the time? Would you say the same things in front of the mirror, would you sing the same songs in the shower if you knew that everyone is listening ? even your identity itself is affected/altered in a world without privacy, the simulation becomes the reality and what is left is the "desert of the Real" (Baudrillard etc)

A stack of papers with 500 megabytes represented as bits (one's and zero's) is roughly 70 meters tall, *not* 4 roundtrips to the sun. Here's some back of the envelope math:
    Assumptions:
    - 500 megabytes = 4194304000 bits.
    - We can fit 3043 bits (one's and zero's) per piece of A4 paper with Times New Roman 12px.
    - A piece of paper (A4 format) is 0.05 millimetres thick.
    - Distance from the Earth to the Sun: 149 600 000 kilometres = 149 600 000 000 meters
    - "From here to the Sun 4 times over": 149 600 000 000 * 4 = 598 400 000 000 meters
4194304000 / 3043 = 1378345.05 = Amount of A4 paper we will need to fit all the bits.
    1378345.05 * 0.05 = 68917.2525 mm = 68.917 meters high stack of A4 paper.
    Conclusion:
    69 meters != 598 400 000 000 meters
This guy is off with 10 orders of magnitude. Makes you wonder what else he's wrong about.

A lot of what people think they "know" about other people actually consists of learned stereotypes that they have internalized over a lifetime and then apply instantly to people they see on the street. I can tell you with absolute certainty that most of the assumptions people make most frequently about me, based upon nothing more than my appearance, are quite wrong. There are also many stereotypes we all learn about behaviors, preferences, etc. and these can be inferred from these. Thus, most people think they can, for example, "tell" who is "gay" based upon what clothing they are wearing, what car they drive, what movies they like, etc. One of the most ridiculous examples of this that I have ever encountered is the idea that there are "gay cars," i.e., cars that are somehow preferred by women and, thus, "must" be indicative of homosexuality if a man is driving one. Volkswagen was influenced by this to such an extent that they redesigned their New Beetle to flatten out the curves and make the car more "masculine." But, here's another thing: the assumption that homosexuality has anything to do with being effeminate (if you're male) or masculine (if you're female). Neither has anything at all to do with whether one is a homosexual or not and, in fact, there are as many hyper-masculine looking men who are homosexuals as there are effeminate women who are lesbians. There are really only two factors that decide, ultimately, who is and who is not a homosexual: (1) an attraction to members of one's own sex and (2) either acting upon that attraction or considering acting upon it. Nothing else has anything to do with it and most of the rationale people use to decide who is "gay" are nothing more than stereotypes. The supposed accuracy of tests to determine who is "gay" are based upon stereotypes, not upon actual factual data about people.

Feeling FeNi I had a similar experience when I began using the Issuu app. When I selected art as one of my interests, it immediately began showing me things aimed at women, as if only women like art or are artists. This is pure stereotyping, made by homophobic men who are afraid that if their friends think they like art, that they will be assumed to be "gay." The fact is that art was invented in the stone age by men and its long history has been dominated by men (one of the chief complaints of feminist artists).

First of all, blaming Mark Zuckberg and Facebook on parenting Facebook likes does not acquit you or Facebook of using likes to profile people, especially when those who are profiled don’t have any knowledge of you doing so. You should at least ask for consent from users. Also, you create a false opposition that it is easy for you to defend. Of course you can talk about the benefits of Google maps. But profiling people also cause detriments to the most vulnerable people, such as credit fraud. Why don’t argue against these situations?
