The actor on the left ( Jeremy Bulloch) played Boba Fett, the mercenary in the first Star Wars trilogy. He also had a minor role in For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy playing an MI6 staff member.
Bond is meant to be an expert in all things he tries and very audacious, so I'd imagine he plays a pretty ruthless King's Indian and the like. Maybe not GM level as that might be a bit much, but I could imagine Mi6 preparing an insane opening for him to use to catch out a top grandmaster that Bond is for some reason playing (which would make sense since Russia have a lot of good chess players and Bond always seems to be fighting them), and Bond could train for that exact variation. Maybe Bond could be posing as a great chess player, to get close to the high ranks of a criminal organization, and he must win to prove his right to be there. Another scenario I could imagine is Bond passing by a world class player and casually informs him of the best move that causes a quick mate and everyone is stunned while Bond just continues as he was.
