- Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar reacts to seven memorable movie and TV scenes featuring chess games and rates them based on their technical accuracy.
She looks at various scenes from "The Queen's Gambit" (2020) and "From Russia with Love" (1963). Polgar rates the psychology of players in "X-Men" (2000), and "Queen of Katwe" (2016). She looks at the accuracy of opening moves in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001) and "Pawn Sacrifice" (2014). She also discusses the inaccuracy of TV chess boards, such as in "Friends" (2003).
Polgar was the women's world chess champion from 1996 to 1999. In 1991 she became the third woman to be awarded the title of grandmaster by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and she has won 12 medals at the Women's Chess Olympiad. She is currently head of the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence at Webster University and has served as co-chair of the FIDE Commission for Women's Chess.

While setting a trap you get to control the weak player in order to win the game.
To build a strong game you have to make the pawns strong by protecting them in chain.Which is the similar to how a Kingdom becomes strong.
If you fell into the trap its like trusting the scammers,and if you understood the trap you won't fell for it.
There are 1000s of life lessons in this Game, the series was rather busy in depicting emotions, anxiety etc. Hence it was made for non-chess players as well

A game like that has to be played with each move just being the most optional one for that state of the board right? You can't remember every single board and plan ahead for every one.
Susan can play chess without seeing the board. She can play the game on the phone while walking around.

@@GamerGrovyle they are just that good. I once played in a 100 people simul against Ivan Ivanisevic, and the thing he seemed to have most problems with was the walking distance (which is actually quite a lot). He absolutely smashed it, had 98 wins and two draws I believe.

She is a woman grand master which has different requirements. Her sister Judit is a grand master and was ranked 8th in the world. Her other sister, Sofie is an international master.

I cant believe it. It's so nice to see her again. I first saw her on a National Geographic documentary Make Me a Genius. When I saw how popular Queen's Gambit had become, I instantly thought of her. I'm really glad to see her in the limelight again

Yes she really did imply that every man she played against in the 70's, 80's, and 90's was a sexist asshole to her.
@@FromaneGo But she's telling the truth. Men were not very welcoming to women chess players. In fact, male players at that time didn't think a woman's brain could handle the complexities of the game.
There is one event where Susan had to be protected by her father and taken out from the hotel she was staying in because she had received death threats. It was THAT bad. Another incident was a GM telling her that a woman's place was in the kitchen or the bedroom only. Even Kasparov was extremely sexist to female players saying that women could never be good chess players because they were bad fighters. Kasparov has now done a 180 on his views and the reason for that change are the Polgar sisters - Susan, Sofia and Judit (Judit beat Kasparov at 24 yrs old and became the first woman to beat him).

All hail the great chess master Polgars - Susan, Sofia and Judit.
What's so interesting about all 3 is because they were not prodigies. They were the result of years of "experiment" by their father Lazlo Polgar.
Lazlo was a developmental psychologist and be believed that "genius was made, not born".so he sought to prove his theory on his daughters. Susan picked chess on a whim and Lazlo devoted hours and hours of specialized training on his daughters.
One key thing he focused on was that the girls loved the game. If they learned to love the game, they could do well. So Lazlo started to create stories about the pieces, made the training fun and enjoyable. It was tough for all 3 and they faced a lot of sexism but their father continually encouraged them. I honestly think their story is much more interesting than the series.

They really go out of their way to get someone really knowledgeable, one of the most talented chess players in the world, not to mention her sister probably being the best female of all time. Well done insider!

OMG! 326 games SIMULTANEOUSLY?!! That's very impressive O.O
And more amazingly: it's not even the record. The record belongs to an Iranian GM who played 604 games with %80 wins, 16 draws and 8 losses (97.35%). Susan's simul was the world record at the time, and she won 309 games with 14 draws and 2 losses (96.93%).
Even more amazing is GM Timur Gareyev's Guinness recognized world record of 48 games blindfolded simultaneously against 43 in person opponents and 5 online opponents. He won 35, 7 draws, and 6 losses. The matches lasted from 8:30am Saturday to 3:39am Sunday (19 hours 9 minutes). His opponents averaged around 1700 elo and with the highest being 2200.

@jay frost no she didn't win world championship. but she was a top 10 player(not just top 10 women player) by rating, and did beat the best players in the world, including world champions, at tournament games.

The Harry Potter game was actually constructed by an IM and it’s a very interesting tatctic for check mate
Though sadly they edited out some important segments when creating the film so it no longer really shows how nicely the original position was constructed.
An interesting detail about that chess game was there was more than one way to win in the final position. One way would have involved sacrificing the piece Harry was playing as, and the other involved sacrificing the piece Ron was playing as. And Ron chose to sacrifice himself. So the chess game actually provides additional characterization for Ron.

I got a laugh out of her mentioning "we can watch games live on the internet" since it was basically the only moment the video feed went bad.
I think we all learned something today. People that make TV shows and movies sometimes don't play chess. (I learn a similar lesson from watching other videos in this series.)
There's even a short film made by Pixar called Geri's Game. An elderly man called Geri set up a chess game in the middle of the park and played by himself by taking off his glasses and playing as the opponent. Soon the white pieces are captured turn after turn leaving the king behind. To outsmart himself, Geri (with glasses on) faked his heart attack, rotated the board and played as the black team. Then he moved the black queen right next to the white king which ended the game.
The finale episode of Queen's Gambit has Hikaru Nakamura stated as not everything is stated is in real life, but they do it for good TV. Draw when losing is a boogeyman's scare, and most GMs just give brief handshakes and then move on if anyone resigns or a draw is declared. And in tournaments, chess is also a quiet game like golf, noise can distract the players, especially when other matches are in play and the cheer can be disruptive.
13:58 Something the scene shows and is later said by Magneto in the next movie is that he willing to sacrifice his pawns for his goal while Xavier plays more conservatively to keep his pieces alive rather than go for an early kill.
As a chess expert, you can't expect people who are non chess experts to set up the board correctly! What a pretty scene!

Is just a big long table with many boards, and the player just go moving on one board at the time. Tecnically is what you do on chess sites playing 50 dudes in mail chess mode.
More difficult is playing all these simultanepus games with clock, because you need to move quicker, lkterrally, your feets and hands 🤣
Whats really a genious thing to do is to play a blindfold match, in wich you play without looking at the board. All the match is in your head.
Now, imagine playing simoultaneous blindfold chess with 48 other people. Thats it, this is the extraordinary among extraordinary.

The spaces between the pieces are probably only 1-2 cm, and how can you tell what the opponent is doing. Well I can't blame you if it's only your imagination, but don't start thinking playing 326 games simultaneously is easy.

Winning the women’s world championship 4 times is incredible but she does have an even crazier accomplishment which is the fact that she is only 1 of 3 players in Chess history to win the world Rapid and the world Blitz championships in the same year, the other 2 being Anna Muzychuk and the World number 1 Magnus Carlsen
Most of these depictions should probably lose a point just for the speed with which the games are being played. Regular play--especially in non-speed tournaments--does not happen at blitz speed, as is almost always the case in movies and on tv.
Yeah, but classical time control chess, for example, can easily go for over five hours. So you have to speed it up. I think anyone who knows chess, knows there's a wide spectrum of time controls. People who don't know chess, probably don't think too much about what's going on. People are frequently uneducated about stuff. For example, for decades I have tried to explain to people about Minnesota Fats. The movie the Hustler came out, then Ralph Wanderone claimed HE was the real Minnesota Fats, and he wasn't even from Minnesota. Then he goes on TV, Wide World of Sports, and gets his clock cleaned by a real pool champion, Mosconi. Did people then realized Fats was conning everyone? No. A lot of people who know little about the history of pool, and who were generally around in the era where people knew about Fats, think Fats was some pool legend...legend in his own mind, and yeah, he did have name recognition. But as a pool player, not world class.

I love this clip. While I am no means a pro, I have played chess enough to know about the psychological aspect of the game. And it is thrilling, I love playing this game. I wish they would've covered the Game of Shadows scene as well, because that scene depicted a style of chess not seen in the modern world all that often. And I also think that chess moves need to be clearly seen an setup in films so that people can follow very easily. Case in point The Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone where you can't really see all the pieces or exact positions.

Except that would mean the character Beth Harmon has a sister hidden off screen who is even better at chess than she is. Judit (Susan's sister) is the only woman to ever be rated over 2700, and is widely regarded as the greatest female chess player of all time.

I enjoyed this video. In the last scene, two people were playing chess and the corner square was black. Susan said that the corner square was supposed to be white. That means the board is offcially set up incorrectly, but this scene can still be very realistic because maybe the people (who are not chess experts) in the video don''t even know how to set up the board correctly. A lot of people who are non chess experts don't know how to set up a chess board properly, that means the chess scence is realistic! Hope this makes sense! I think if there is a chess board in a commercial, then the board should be set up correctly.

One of my favorite things to do was simply to smile, when my opponent starts to make a move that I really do not want them to make.

I have seen a game where someone lost a minor piece in the first 10 moves ( lost, not sacced,) and they resigned. Probably partly in disgust. But it's probably hard to win a knight or bishop down, when there's no compensation.

Her Sister Judit had a rating of 2735, which would still put her in the Top 20 Men in 2021....
The top player she refers to at 3:40 was Kasparov. He was caught cheating because he was losing to a 14 yr old girl who happens to be Susans sister, Judit.
I just researched and found out that she was 17 not 14 and the cheating was moving back a piece. It's still pretty bad but your comment is kinda disingenuous.
@@paulgotik Then again, Kasparov is renowned for being a jerk. And moving back a piece is the first thing you teach children not to do when they're learning, so... yeah. It's like a flying kick at the runner to stop a touchdown. Getting her age wrong is a minor offence in comparison.

Who would've thought that Joey vs Phoebe wasn't a technically correct game? :) It'd be awesome if it had though. With Lisa Kudrow's IQ being quite high, I'd think that she'd be a very proficient chess player, but then again that doesn't guarantee that she even know how to play.
