  • Two dulcimer tracks with dulcimers tuned DAA are used for The Arkansas Traveler. It was raining today so making this video gave me something fun to do. The lyrics on this are fun and tell a great story full of backwoods wit.

lyrics ; Oh, once upon a time in Arkansas An old man sat at his little cabin door And fiddled at a tune that he liked to hear A jolly old tune that he played by ear. It was raining hard, but the fiddler didn't care, He sawed away at the popular air, And his rooftop leaked like a waterfall But it didn't seem to bother the man at all. A traveler was riding by that day And stopped to hear him a'practicin' away. The cabin was afloat and his feet were wet But still the old man didn't seem to fret. So the stranger said, "Now, the way it seems to me, You'd better mend your roof," said he. But the old man said as he played away, "I couldn't mend it now; it's a rainy day!" The traveler replied, "That's all quite true, But this, I think, is the thing for you to do: Get busy on a day that is fair and bright, And patch the old roof til it's good and tight." But the old man kept on a'playin' at his reel And tapped the ground with his leathery heel. "Get along," said he, "for you're giving me a pain. My cabin never leaks when it doesn't rain!"

Thank you for presenting not only the melody & instrumental but also the lyrics. I recall reading the lyrics when i was a kid taking piano lessons from the old John Thompson books. Only the 1st stanza was presented & always wondered what the remainder of the lyrics were. Here's a tidbit: The Thompson version ad libbed to play a L-handed (lower octave part) a la Bazooka which I later learned was an Bassoon-like instrument after which the US army weapon was named!

Arkansas Traveler is an old bluegrass fiddle tune. It usually is played with a fiddle and seldom sung, so I wanted to provide a sung version. It also was the state song for Arkansas at one time (with different lyrics). It was great fun arranging a rainy song on a rainy day.

I never heard a sung version of Arknasas Traveler before working on this video either (other than the old Looney Tunes cartoon "I'm looking for a baby bumble bee" that used part of the melody). I think there are a lot of fiddle tunes that are just played as instrumentals and the sung versions are almost forgotten. They can be as much fun to sing as they are to play and I think I was overdue for posting a fun song.
Thanks again for your kind comments.

I remember listening to a famous musician once and I realized he took the time to play it and sing it right (he made great sounds and he wasn't playing fast). That realization has motivated me to play music at a speed that is comfortable for me. I enjoy playing songs at what I'll call "singing speed". If you sing or think the lyrics while learning, you might find yourself playing the song slower and learning it faster.
    Good Luck learning Arkansas Traveler.

OMG!! I know this song! It was on a record we had as kids. On this record we're a lot of silly songs and this is one of them. I hadn't heard it since I was about 12, but I remember it for all these years (I'm 55 now). I used to play the record for my brother. There were a few plastic records of different colors. Did u also have these records or was this an actual song? I remember it being a faster song. That's the only real difference. The words I remember r a little different. I remember "The cabin was afloat and his feet were wet, but still the old man didn't seem to fret, so the stranger said "Well the way it seems to me, better mend your roof", said he. But the old man said as he played away, "I couldn't mend it now; it's a rainy day". It's all the same. Thank you for a wonderful memory

Eileen ... We got our first record player around 1963 and one of our first records was Terry Stafford's "Suspicion". We had some other records and one was a jazz record and the record itself was also a picture of musicians playing music in a street scene. We didn't have "Arkansas Traveler" but if I hear any of those first records that we had, I go right back to 1963. Musical memories are wonderful.
Most people today play "Arkansas Traveler" as an instrumental and most people tend to play it very fast. Some people play the instrumental part fast then speak or sing the lyrical part at a slower speed. The spoken versions tell a story and the story varies greatly from the lyrics I use (check out Pete Seeger's version here on CZcams). I decided to play the entire song at the same speed (at what I call "singing speed").
"Arkansas Traveler" is just fun to play and I still play it at least once a week. ...

Thanks Maggie. I have to play the song often in order to maintain the ability to play it, but it's fun!
