HOPPER ACTION - Paddle Packing Recycling

  • Courtesy of my employment at Auburn Council, here is another hopper video I have to bring to all my viewers! My last packer action from a side loader was of two pendulums thrown up earlier this year and before that was a massive paddle video posted well over 2 years ago. For the new share I’m uploading more paddle entertainment, this time featuring comingled recycling aka single stream recycling. The featured truck is a very familiar vehicle, being an Iveco ACCO, with the signature note of the Cummins engine billowing out of the exhaust pipe beside the camera. The MacDonald Johnston body is also a well known product, with a refuse model hopper and standard paddle appearing in this movie. Once again I achieved this hopper video with my trusty Gorillapod, sitting over a hopper edge and secured with two legs wrapped around the front beacon guard.
    As is very evident at the beginning, I recorded this with an empty truck, straight back at the run after tipping a load of garbage. The recycling is smoothly pushed through the unfilled apertures without any effort whatsoever, as is generally the case with any material in any empty compactor. Although once the body on these smaller refuse models becomes loaded with recycling, this size paddle can struggle a great deal feeding incoming material. Once you’ve thrown 200-250 bins on these trucks, large cardboard can protrude out of the body holes, which creates a bridging effect and stops bin contents from falling right down into the hopper bowl. The smaller height paddle really isn’t best choice when 240Ls are being emptied, as it isn’t fast enough at clearing recycling and can’t always easily grab onto bulkier materials. I hated doing units and townhouses, because I’d inevitably climb up multiple times to push cardboard into the path of the paddle or would have to sit and wait for an overflowing hopper to be swept.
    As I’ve mentioned in my previous hopper videos, I’ve had many problems with the camera automatically cancelling recording due to some kind of sensitivity towards concentrated sound. There have been a number of times in the past where the camera captures only a couple of minutes of footage or even nothing when set-up right near the exhaust. I still haven’t figured out what does and doesn’t affect the camera but, because I achieved a 25min clip one time and on this occasion I was left with an almost non-stop 14min file... but I’m not complaining considering the successes I’ve been blessed with! So I wasn’t sure if this video would turn out successful or not, but I climbed up three times to check on the camera and it had stopped once, but I got it going again until it stopped a second time, at which point I was satisfied with what it did save for me. Anyway enough rambling, now go ahead and watch the hopper action my legend of a camera recorded =]

    The one thing that didn't seem to cause the paddle too much trouble was that bale of cardboard tied together with some kind of twine. It didn't seem to have too many problems shoving it into the back of the truck. It took several cycles but it eventually got pushed back, a lot easier than some of the other garbage.

    We still have separate trucks for rubbish & recyclables
    Our recyclables used to be put in a small black crate which was emptied by a guy riding on the back of the truck until the early 2000s.

      @Lotr2987 Před 2 lety +1

      My area had the crates for recycling, and 80L bins (or something like that) for rubbish, until 2011, when the council decided it was pretty much time for a change, they bought 9 fresh 2011 Hino 500 trucks, and replaced the bins with the current 140L red bins and 240L yellow recycling bins, 7 of these old trucks were eventually replaced with fresh 2019 Hino 500's in 2019,
      There's a bit of contamination with our recycling system too, many people here recycle properly, but some people put junk in their recycling bin, A lot of people here put bulky and weird stuff in their red bins, you always hear loud cluttering noises coming from the hoppers of the trucks as they empty bins

  • @georgewuzheer

    Absolutely brilliant. Prefer watching recyclables getting packed away over trash or green waste, maybe has something to do with the various bits of packaging being easy to identify, and knowing that before long all those boxes and bottles will be new again. Also prefer watching a paddle over a pendulum, much more entertaining. In any case the paddle seems to hold it's own but of course that's with an empty body. These are all 240L bins? I suppose a bit of extra paddle height would be enough modification to make quick work of a route full of 360s? Be sure to thank your legend of a camera for this legend of a vid. ;)

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +georgewuzheer Good thing about recycling too is that it's clean, so you don't get scared when bags pop and shit sprays everywhere... even though it's just a video :D I couldn't say I have a favourite waste stream or packer to watch, I just love it all! Yep these are all 240L, even though only 20-50L worth fell out of some bins. The actual recycle bodies have a heightened paddle, which makes a big difference with sweeping efficiency. For 360L work the double paddle is the go but - consider it our answer to a 300g route! Not sure if you've already seen it, but check a video on here titled "Real Hopper Footage" and search "double paddle" on Flickr for a visual. My camera took a vacation for a while =]

    Are you sure this truck is collecting "recyclable" materials, at some points throughout this video you could almost be mistaken for thinking its was emptying garbage. I can recall you saying that Auburn had a pretty crappy contamination rate, now I can see why. And to think this was only 14 minutes of video, imagine the amount of contamination that ends up at Visy everyday. Oh well, not too much you can do about it as a driver considering it's up to councils to properly educate their residences about the proper use of each bin. Obviously a thing Auburn doesn't do enough of. Top work mate, defiantly enjoyed this one.

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +Ivecofan21 Yep recycling quality isn't the best in Auburn. According to a NSW report the council actually falls amongst the worst performing when it comes to recycling/recovery. This is actually one of the better areas too, this 14mins being probably average of what you'd get inside the bins. Although in areas around the Auburn CBD and in units, contamination is a big issue. Sometimes I've emptied bins and needed to check if I actually emptied a yellow top or mistakenly dumped a red lid. Had one person bring out a big cardboard box, which I was suss about and looked inside to find a microwave - resident claimed it was recycling (yes and no). Done plenty of bins full of greens too, but just general mixes of a bit of everything was quite common. Demographics is a key issue in the council; not a heap of English speaking residents and clearly not a majority when it comes to giving a shit about recycling.

  • @VictorianGarbo
    @VictorianGarbo Před 8 lety +2

    Nice video, shame about all of that contamination! When the truck is nearly full and slowly starts to get packed out do like try to time your bins to get emptied on one side of the packer? Like the right side is full but the left isn't so do you try to empty the bins on the left side if the right side is full? Hard to explain but Monash drivers were doing it today. Too much cardboard during this time of the year! One recycle driver got packed out on only 300 or so bins which were basically full of cardboard! Awesome video!

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +2x2 Yep if one side packs out, I'll reverse the paddle manually so I only load everything into the other side. I also allow the paddle to keep sweeping to the full side, so it eventually overcomes the load and starts pushing through again, where I'll resume loading into both sides. Once both sides begin to pack out, I'll stop collecting, will park up (ideally on a bit of an incline) and let the paddle hit both sides until it starts changing direction by itself again. If it's really packed out I'll go for a drive and keep letting it swing left and right - helps with compaction when the load is moving.

  • @SanitationNinefour94Videos

    Another fantastic post, Mitch. I really like the recycling hopper footage over the garbage, partially being that you can play "I Spy" with all the containers & packaging materials as they hit the hopper floor. Are there any operations out there that do recycling first, and then a load of trash? I figure some do it like that over here to avoid having some of the paper & cardboard become coated with all the liquid waste & runoff from the previous garbage run, and thus ruining it. Nonetheless, I'll be looking out for the next one to come!

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +Sanitation94 Yeh that's true, at least with recycling you can usually identify the items that enter the hopper, garbage can be anything! Has to be a quick game of "I Spy" before everything gets swept away =] I've always thought about the recycling-before-trash concept for the reasons you mentioned, but I guess garbage/trash is seen as priority and it becomes ideal to get rid of the heaviest and health hazard waste stream first. There are some regional areas out there where recycling is collected first, but I imagine the recycling collected the next day still comes in contact with the trash residuals from the previous day. I feel sorry for those first bins of recycle which clean the hopper floor and body of garbage remainders!

  • @medicalgarbage3575
    @medicalgarbage3575 Před 4 lety +1

    How do these do when packing out / when the truck is full?

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 4 lety +2

      They can keep putting the material away into the body if you pay attention to what you're loading into the hopper and at what point the paddle is reaching overpressure. The benefit of this is that the paddle might be packing out in one hole and not the other, so you can load into the hole that's still feeding fine and allow the packer to push through the rubbish blocking the other hole. I always found you could still get a fair bit on even when both sides are packing out, unless it's really dense and bulky material - just depends how motivated you are to try for a maximum load too, can be a stuff around sometimes. Gets to a point where both sides are so packed out and the paddle is only just swinging left and right of the centre point, that material will bridge and no longer fall down. If you pack it out too much where material is under pressure right around the middle of the bowl, you risk the paddle jamming halfway, as the point where it crosses the middle mark sees the hydraulics lose their power - so you can potentially have the paddle unable to push material through even after emptying the body.

    Absolutely brilliant video Mitch! Man oh man, can never get tired of those throaty roars from the Cummins ISC05 engine! This is a 2007 model right? What truck number is this? You knew I would like this one! Why does the engine rev up a little bit when the arm is cycling? How high does it usually rev up to? Why do you take off and start driving when the engine is still revved? Shouldn't you let the truck come back down to idle? This is an MJ GenV, right?

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +GarbageSean Oh yep you can bet I knew you'd like this, I was expecting a comment :P This is a 2008 model, yes a GenV body and the truck's fleet number is 139. The engine automatically revs up to 900RPM, which speeds up the pump and increases oil flow, so you can use all the hydraulic functions simultaneously without them slowing down due to higher oil demand. The engine doesn't rev in neutral, so there's no need to wait for the truck to get in gear before taking off, thus I can retract the arm and move off straight away or roll forward while I'm emptying a bin.

    • @GarbageSean
      @GarbageSean Před 8 lety

      +MitchellM15 So basically, you can't run the arm in neutral. You can only run it in either reverse or drive, right? Is there a video on here on how to operate one of these arms? I'm curious to know how to operate one of these trucks.

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +GarbageSean You can run the arm both in neutral or in gear - basically at any time as long as the pump and system power is on. Most of our ASLs rev up automatically during hydraulic operations, depending on the body makes, some remain at idle. Basic to operate one of these arms with a joystick - a button to open the grab and a button to close the grab, to extend the reach you move the joystick to the left and to retract the reach you move the joystick to the right, then to raise the arm you lift the joystick and to lower the arm you lower the joystick. You kind of move the joystick in the same way you want to operate the arm.

    • @GarbageSean
      @GarbageSean Před 8 lety

      +MitchellM15 Ah, I see. So it's the same type of joystick on a Superior Pak or a JJ Richards? Doesn't Iveco mean International, or is it another company altogether? What does ACCO stand for, if anything?

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +GarbageSean There are a few different joystick types being cobra/military spec, palm top and broomstick. MJs can feature any of the three as options, SPAK is usually a palm top and Richards generally always have a broomstick. You can do a few searches on Flickr for some pictures of controls to show you the different types. Iveco bought International here in Australia in what I think was the year 2000, so all the International branded trucks became Iveco branded - their should be a little history to read on the Aussie Iveco website. I don't think ACCO can be expanded, pretty sure that's just what it's called, but I'm not certain on that.

    The packer setup on these trucks seems very odd to me... I fail to see the point of a half meter gap between the top of the packer and the bottom of the opening, and the end of the paddle does seem like it could be a few cm closer to the wall as well...

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      +ATSFpony This manufacturer has the same size body opening on all their side loaders, which feature a few different paddle set-ups. If you search another video of mine titled "Real Hopper Footage" you'll see the double paddle which goes quite well with the larger holes for the extra sweeping volume. Although as for the paddle size in this video, I honestly hate that the opening is this large, as material starts to bulk and stick out into the hopper once the body loads up. I especially hate it with garbage when the material gets really mushy and starts rolling back out over the paddle and into the hopper, almost like a displacement issue, which often results in a trip to unload earlier than wanted. As for the gap between the paddle and wall, I don't have a positive explanation for that, although a few other Aussie makes with paddles also feature a similar distance.
