HOPPER ACTION - Paddle Packing Garbage

- 13 months ago I posted a video titled "REAL Hopper Footage" which featured the hopper component of a MacDonald Johnston side loader, showing a double paddle set-up swinging back and forth to feed green-waste into the truck's body. Due to the intense sound from the exhaust very close to the camera, my videoing device cancelled the recording, which only provided me with 2mins or 8 bins of action. It seems there's a sensor on my camera which shuts down the recorder during a lack-of-motion period to protect the brains of the camera. I'm sort of confused on what does and doesn't affect the camera now but, as I've been successful on a couple of occasions, but unsuccessful again on other occasions. It's almost like it depends on how intense the engine is and if there are many changes in sound... mmm I dunno.
This video came as a result of one of my successful attempts to capture more of this REAL hopper view, where there's no hopper camera being recorded, rather it's my own camera pointing down on the live action. This brings a close up, personal and primary source of entertainment for all you viewers. I've really taken a liking to the angle I've focused on for the last series of hopper videos I've made happen, because you see all the material falling out of the bin, the paddle is in view as it swings from side to side and the whole diameter of the hopper bowl is seen clearly. The visual side of this video is awesome enough, but the audio is another thing when an Iveco ACCO is the truck featured in the video, because the end of the exhaust pipe towers less than a metre beside the camera, so you hear a diesel engine much better than at ground level. This one doesn't sound as mean as the one in that 2min green-waste video I posted, but it's still a Cummins engine =]
Late last year I was videoing one of the old Cleanaway Sidepaks, which were used to collect garbage in Parramatta. I was in a unit area with lines of bins and thought it'd make a sweet hopper video with the constant loading, so I asked the driver and he was happy for me to set the camera up. Took a bit of stuffing around trying to make sure it was properly secured in position, so it wouldn't move around at all, but also needed to achieve a good angle of the action. Initially I had doubts I'd be successful, as trying to hook up the camera with the above in mind was an issue, but I managed to lock it into a solid and secure position with the perfect overhead angle of the hopper and paddle doing it's thing. Lucky those bristles to the left didn't stick out much further, because you only just see the whole area of interest and I couldn't move the camera any further to the right. Once I hit the record button, I was praying it wouldn't cancel on me yet again, because this was going to be some potentially awesome footage.
To my relief, the 3 times I climbed up to check on my set-up, I found my camera was still capturing every second of what was happening in front of the lense =] I was very happy to take the camera off the truck and discover I'd scored a massive 26min clip... it was quite enjoyable to watch back at home. Also I received lots of comments on previous live hopper type videos where there have been requests to see garbage/trash featured as the collected waste stream, so here you go! This was also taken right up until his last bin for this load, so the truck was quite full at this point. I'll also say an enormous thanks to the driver for making this happen - I was ecstatic to have brought something like this home. Since making this video, I've also captured separate short videos of two different pendulum packers and also another paddle video, but featuring co-mingled recycling. This is only the beginning of what's to come but... got many more plans for the future.
Being quite loaded as it was, you'll notice the paddle slow towards the end of each sweep and quickly bounce back from all the pressure, plus you'll hear the build up of pressure in the sound of the engine. Another thing you'll see is how all the garbage bulks up just outside the body aperture on each side of the hopper, but more so on the right side. When the truck's empty everything is pushed into the body no sweat, but once the packer starts pushing against tonnes of garbage, material starts to roll upwards, with more material gradually rolling and bulking up just above the paddle. It can make it a pain in the arse when you load large items or light material which doesn't easily fall down into the path of the packer, because they just sit on top of the bulked up garbage and block everything up with only a small gap leading to the paddle sweep area. The bulked up rubbish gets pretty bad at one point in the video, but there are a couple of other occasions where things don't go through too easy - might have to watch it happening to understand what I'm talking about. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Now, this is what we want to see more of!! Thanks, Mitch for posting this, there's hundreds, if not thousands of vids showing containers being emptied, but hopper vids you don't see to often. It doesn't matter what type packer it may be (I like the pendepacks, hardly any of those out here) the main thing here is what comes out of those cans, which is why I enjoy the trash vids, recyc vids are just about the same. Again, thanks Mitch for taking the time to post these for us!!!
By far my favorite hopper footage vid ever!! Amazing angle, and great quality! Hope there is more to come in the near future!!!
Awesome action! Can't believe the lack of recycling in some areas these days though
Yeh I always gotta keep those trees in mind =] MJs have that benefit with the taller hopper, but the con with those and garbage is that sometimes instead of the material bulking up, it starts to fall back in the hopper. Consider it a kind of displacement - what gets packed in the body, pushes what's in the body out. Just depends how tight the load is around the aperture and if you're loading heavy and mushy stuff. Does go pretty good for a small hopper but ey, handles 240Ls no sweat too.
I could watch this for hours, love seeing the types of things people throw out. Everything from food waste, recycables, clothing and shoes all compacted away.
Absolutely no problem, glad to hear you enjoy the action! More to come in the future no doubt. I need to get more of the pendulum packers but, because I've got only very little to upload of them.
Brilliant footage.
Nice work! I enjoyed every bit of it! I am also astonished by the amount of recyclable and compostable waste that gets thrown away instead of being reused or recycled.
I will say Mitch, I found this a very hypnotising thing to watch. I am impressed on how efficient that packer really is. I hope you keep these videos coming.
I love this stuff. Any chance of anymore?
Fantastic work Mitch!!! Hope to see more videos like this.
I like the brown waterish stuff near the hopper and the popping sounds of the bags how does the garbage truck inside get so full to the top with small hopper space
I didn't think it sounded like an MJ when, but when I saw the paddle I worked out it was a Sidepack. Absolutely love the footage, stay away from low trees when your camera is up there! I reckon the MJ's seem to pack better, they don't have all that rubbish stuffing up on both sides of the hopper leaving the little hole for the garbage to fall into. But I can see why for bottles they would be more efficient. For a small hopper it coped pretty well considering it was pretty full, go the paddle!
The best hopper view i ever seven. In France we had the same kind of mecanism, but on rear loader trucks. Made by SITA, in the 80's.
I did see one rear loader paddle packer in the Cote d' Azur, St Raphael i think. Got a short bit on 8 mm film, need to dig it up.
Eager to watch if you ever manage to find it :)
awesome footage mitch cant wait for more :)
Just listening to this engine again, this truck does actually sound pretty mean, but not as mean as some of the others. I especially love the exhaust - you can hear it much better up here than on the ground. You very well know I love these hopper videos because of the exhaust sounds! Any more of these vids coming, but with real mean sounding exhausts!
When the revs started going the grabbers loosened up on the bin a little, so the bin fell in until the wheels caught on the belt - the paddle moving the material ended up moving the bin too. No manual packer control with these trucks, generally they're left in continuous mode to constantly sweep left and right.
This better than any show on tv they are all trash this is some good ole garbage tv!!! I could watch for hours.Thank you Mitchell
Thanks! I'll look I it up.
Yep ours are pretty tiny in size, usually they keep up pretty well with the inflowing material too, but there are a couple of larger versions to handle certain higher volume collections. This is also one of the smaller hopper designs down here - the other bodies tend to feature larger ones, but probably still not as massive as some of the US ones! haha Be sure to let me know if you get a video of the RR hopper up; I'd be hell keen to watch it =]
sweet footage mitch i cant believe all that green waste and recycling is going to landfill i hope to see more hopper footage soon :)
CAN YOU GET SOME MORE LIKE THAT? I LOVED WATCHING ALL THE TYPES OF RUBBISH, SO AMAZING.
THOMAS
Awesome video!
I've noticed that your paddle packers are not as high as ours in the US, at least the Heil Rapid Rails we run here in Southern California. Our hoppers are deeper and the paddle much larger. That build up you see to each side of the hopper here well on ours, that happens above the packer after the truck gets packed out. I am working on a video of a rapid rail hopper in action that hopefully I can post here in a week.
Excellent packer video! Seems to be an efficient packer. First time I've actually seen one clog up was in this video at 15:16 lol, when you put the brake on, what was shaking the bin? Can you manual pack these trucks?
Great video! Keep up the good work.
Awesome Footage Mitch! Great angle and quality. Very sad to see all of Those recyclables and Organic materials going to landfill. You could easily mistake this hopper for one of the MJ in Mackay as we don't have a green waste service (Yet) and people can't be bothered to sort out their waste. :)
Anyone who watches this all the way through is in need of serious help!!
why?
MitchellM15 does it go to landfill or incinerator? how does this style truck work? It seems different.
Not really sure if I'll end up getting garbage from the inside, because I've remembered how feral the body interior of a truck collecting garbage can be. Would only happen if it's been washed out, but finding a different truck/driver to do it with is another issue. Closest I've got is with a front-lift when I placed the camera in the back after tipping off.
Yeh I was thinking the same thing! haha You see it start to overflow and hope the stuff will fall through, then next thing the paddle's ripping through everything :P I'd like to get something of a Solo split one day, we'll see what happens - would've been an epic video with the old auger clearing the top compartment ey.
This is a fantastic video! Really good hopper footage! I had no clue that the packer could clear the trash so fast. Must make for an easy job haha One thing i did notice is that the trash seems to get stuck around the front and back of the hopper. Seems like it might cause a bit of an issue. This is a great video though! Really hoping to see more like this in the future!
When are you going to upload the hopper action? I can't wait to hear that roaring engine!
Very nice footage Mitch don't the people that live in the area no what a recycling bins is.????
I do not know when. I only decide on the video I upload when it's time to upload something. You'll have to wait and see when I get a video up.
I would like to know what is green about this waste? I see petro-chemical plastic bags, wax covered containers, etc.
Wow there's a lot of garbage in the hopper and the truck ended up getting full haha I love the sound of that truck Thanks for the post cheers :)
I love this mitchell. One thing puzzles me i never saw but one ole sneaker i wonder was there a second one LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting, so what would happen if you put the truck in neutral and tapped the gas ? The packer wouldn't speed up?
Where did you get the camera mount from?
+Slammin Eagle I can't remember which shop I got it from, but it's called a Gorillapod, shouldn't be too hard to find one.
But I will still be able to hear the exhaust of the truck?
Great video! I know this truck is not the meanest one around. Will the recycling truck be a really loud and mean one? Is the canera pointing right at the exhaust when you made the video?
After a while I forgot about recycling and suchlike and just wanted to Crush Stuff!! Everything .... cans, bottles, small appliances, woodland creatures!!
Excellent Catch! Was he getting full or is the SidePAK's Hopper always a bit backed-up?
Nice video my bro bombastik hopper videos
Loved watching the packer from your camera instead of the one from inside the cab! It's such a shame seeing all those recyclables and green waste going to landfill. Was Parramatta on of the councils that take their refuse to the UR-3R? Also I agree how its just a tad annoying the SidePak's packer builds up on the sides leaving only the centre to be packed properly, Sweet footage anyway!
Oh yep this paddle would speed up a lot! There doesn't seem to be any valve restricting oil flow to the packer on these bodies, but one of the other designs doesn't go much faster regardless of engine speed.
Cool vid
interesting footage, not sure how the design could be improved. i used to work on garbage trucks. interesting hydraulic setups
nice video
MitchellM15 you did a video of you inside a yard waste hopper are you going to do one of your self inside a trash hopper like this ever?
+Brian smith Highly unlikely that I will - I've already done it for the green-waste, so it's not worth doing it again as it's the same kind of thing. Not exactly the best thing to do repeatedly, plus I'd get covered in shit with normal garbage.
@@AussieGarbo would you let somebody else take a video from inside body with normaal garbage?
He was pretty loaded - right at the end of the video is when he stopped to tip off.
So much of that could have been recycled but it was a good video none the less
Yep the recycle truck's got a meaner sound to it, get different notes from the engine too. Can't point the camera directly at the exhaust when I'm getting a hopper video :P That'll be a different one.
very nice=)
Cool hooper footage. Why is there so much recycling in the garbage bin don't they people now what a recycling bin is for. When people pot recycling in the garbage it just gives me the shits.
+RedlandsGarbageFan Then you'll have explosive diarrhea when you see the rear loading garbage trucks on here eating CRT TVs, fridges, washers, ovens, microwaves, even books! So many people don't care unfortunately.

I can almost sell that hopper! O__0
P.S. how are those compactors so strong?
Logic.
I have an exclusive for you guys, superior Pak have just released the raptor series 4 on a new model of the Dennis eagle
lol bye bye oil can at 6:00
LAZY people don't want to take 10 seconds to throw recycling items into a separate bin. I also hate it!
wow this packer design leaves stuff behind
I Know, the paddle packers are usually shit, Pendulum packers are definitely the best.
Yes you will.
Yeh this hopper video owns hopper cam videos lol Unfortunately all the garbage from Parramatta gets dumped straight on the landfill at the moment. To think this is only 25mins of collecting out of the how many hours of collecting out there?! Sad this happens pretty much everywhere :/ I guess as long as you don't have to stuff around waiting for the material to go through, there's no issue, more annoying watching it from this angle =]
The problem is there are still a lot of retards out there who don't understand recycling or don't give a shit. Really is a shame seeing what ends up with the garbage, especially when recycle and greens bins are available.
Great footage but sad to see a lot of materials going to landfill instead of getting recycled
This was in Australia, I'm in New Zealand where we also use Australian trucks, people also put recyclable material in their red bin, too lazy to try and stuff them in their yellow recycling bins, In fact, our recycling center dumps a lot of glass in the trash, because there's just been far too much of it they just don't know where to put or what to do with it, so if they haven't got any space for it, into the trash it goes
Good vid, just can't believe they don't recycle.
turbocat1984 they do but some retarded people put recycling in garbage
That might be the worst packing design I’ve seen but it actually keeps up.
Don't you mean paddle packing spunk that garbage in there is 💯 gorgeous and beautiful
How come you didn't film from inside on that one? haha. We are all waiting for the inside filming in a garbage truck, Greens was good - but want to see garbage.
those poor fern plants at 15:45, so would have rescued them.
mrrandy1 they're weeds that spread fast as and are a real pest not related to ferns
The weeds are an noxious weed in Australia the name of the plant is Asparagus fern
at 4:14 bye bye pepsi bottle
Selamlar
Nah don't have a GoPro, got a tripod with flexible legs instead, so I can wrap around things.
Son rotz
Eww it’s nasty but interesting 🤮
This Is Bullshit ... Have You EVER HEARD OF RECYCLING.....
