HOPPER ACTION - Pendulum Packing Garbage

  • It’s time for another upload of a hopper in action, how exciting! In this video we will be watching a pendulum packer sweeping the hopper of a Superior Pak side loader, with the favourite mixed household garbage being the featured waste stream. The footage starts off with a couple of groups of 240Ls, then the rest shows the contents of 140Ls being tipped onto and in front of the pendulum blade. With thanks to my partner in crime at the wheel of the truck, I managed to set the camera up in a particular complex where the bins were mainly close together for quick lifts and frequent loading action. Saying all this, I feel blessed that the camera recorded what it did before cancelling like it has more often than not in the past... I think all the loud whining during cycles saved me on this occasion! I remember doing the playback and saw the clip I recorded was less than 2min long, causing my heart to fall out of my chest, with the thought I had failed yet again to capture hopper footage. Well it turns out I was looking at the wrong clip and discovered the camera achieved almost 10min of action instead!
    I know this video is a far cry from the 30min of loading and packing some would be mesmerised by, but it’s better than nothing! I did attempt to capture additional footage of this hopper, but the second try proved to be the normal fail with the camera quitting its job. I’ll also mention that we look down in the hopper from a different mounting point in the video, which doesn’t beat the view of garbage getting squashed into the body holes, but this is the best I could score at the time. I found it wasn’t possible for me to secure the camera in the usual spot around the front beacon guard, so I explored all other possibilities and found a convenient metal part just on the front of the body, which I set the camera on to supply this entertainment. I have tried so many times in the past to capture various hopper videos, but 9/10 times I’m left disappointed, although every so often my past efforts get rewarded with some success - such as this upload! I’m a big fan of the pendulum design and it’s undoubtedly my favourite packer for the shown waste stream... I hope you enjoy watching it swinging into the rubbish as much as I do.

    Hi Mitch!! Great vid, if you are able to, could you put some more of these on, there are never enough hopper vids (trash that is) the you tube world is loaded with sets of tongs grabbing a container, the outcome there is well, the trash goes into the hopper, but hopper vids show us whats comin out of the containers (never know what will ) and then seeing the power behind the trash bein compacted!!!. This and the fact that I can count on my hand the number of pendepacks I've seen, they are fun to watch! Thanks Mitch!!

    Fantastic footage you got here. Very entertaining 9 minutes and 7 seconds. I was actually just about to upload some hopper video myself today, but I might push it to next week. I noticed a lot of recyclables mixed in with the trash, so do they sort it out?

      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety

      Too bad there wasn't an extra 9min and 7sec on top! Unfortunately, everything which ends up in this hopper gets a ticket to landfill - the only form of recovery is the organics in the form of methane ;)

    how full was the body at the start of this? managed pretty well with the constant stream of bins particularly right at the beginning. also a good idea to try for the highest quality action at the start of your time recording--sounds like early in your recording session is when the camera has the greatest chance of capturing at least that bit before giving up and turning off or whatever.

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety +2

      There was a good load on when I took this, was right near the end of the run too, so probably had about 8t on maybe. You can hear some of those bags popping and that light creaking when the packer stops ;) The newer Superior Paks have dual pumps so the pendulum runs a bit faster than this older model, which you may notice slows down once the lifter starts working - only got a single pump and the lifter functions get oil priority over the packer. You're right, I always try and aim for the best starting spots when I attempt this... most times I'm left with a few bins of action or nothing at all. I have noticed a number of times the recording cancels as soon as I start the paddle packers on other trucks - it's damn hard to figure out.

      If you're serious about it and have more yet to film, you should get a gopro or this camera called the "Countour Roam." Both are sturdy and some models water resistant and certainly fine with heat / excessive noise. But the biggest sell is the wide angle. I'm imagining you are a sucker for good hopper videos and I am too, so I had to borrow the latter camera from Jaccob to make some--real happy with what I've gotten. Due to its wide angle I can just mount it approximately facing where I want, and 9 times out of 10 the angle is just how I imagined (cuz there's no LCD screen).

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety

      I have thought about getting a wide angle camera of some kind, but thought against it for now, honestly not too keen on spending money on fresh camera equipment at this point. I'll continue to work with my current resources for now... and the regular frustrations when my hopper video attempts become sour. Wish me luck! :D I'm looking forward to seeing what you've captured, might be your next upload? (I'm hinting that you should upload a hopper video next)

      First off, nice footage! Thanks for taking and posting it. Goes to show trash is trash, no matter the country LOL
      As for the camera canceling out, if it is due to noise maybe finding a way to muffle to microphone a bit so it's not overwhelmed would help?

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you very much ;) What I don't get about the camera situation is that when it's handheld, the thing will keep recording until the battery dies, whereas if it's mounted somewhere that's when the recording may cancel itself :S Interestingly, sometimes there will be no issues, other times it won't give me anything or it will hang in for a bit and then cancel - same engines and mounting spots... I honestly can't get my head around it, a complete mystery. I've recorded some intense exhaust sound in the past too, so I'm wondering if it's even a microphone issue..... might be more of a vibration thing, but I have drop detection turned off so it must be a separate effect if so.

    Very interesting packer design, have not seen this before. Have you ever dropped a camera into the hopper ? The design is very effective in packing and clearing the rubbish.
    Keep up the great work, I enjoyed every minute of it.
    How do these hoppers keep up maintenance wise ? I am sure that the curve is prone to more wear and tear then the straight design.

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety +1

      Nope never dropped a camera in before - I ensure the mounting is very secure, would take a tsunami or hurricane to knock it off :D This isn't too common a packing mechanism, only a handful of manufacturers use them around the world to my knowledge, but I definitely prefer it over the paddle. Couldn't tell you much about how the design holds up in strength, although it does flatten out more near the bottom where the compacting occurs. Otherwise you still get the usual worn out floor and body walls adjacent to the hopper as time goes by, blade can get a bit beaten up too.

      Many thanks for your detailed reply. Great video's and keep up the great work. Still trying to find a compacting system on CZcams where they used the Archimedes type screw system.
      When I was a kid in The Netherlands, I followed the rubbish trucks weekly for many hours and they used a rotating Archimedes worm to tear the bags and screw them into the tank storage.

    Excellent footage, where you chasing the truck to make sure you didn't loose your camera? Was this from one of the Northern Councils, I'll leave the unnamed? The Pendulum coped well with all that material, there where some greens in there that shouldn't have been I noticed, not much you can do once it is in the truck. The material certainly isn't as dirty and contaminated as from your Parramatta video from a while back.

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety

      Yep I was keeping a close eye on it from the outside, but I always secure it tight enough to make sure I don't have to be worried about it coming loose... not that I don't play it safe anyway :D Yes this was from a northern council, but not so much the northern side of Sydney where I live ;) Oh two very different areas where this garbage is produced compared to Parra - we can say it's a lot "cleaner" considering it is rubbish.
