  • It’s sweet to think back to all the jobs I’ve held over the years and recall how I’ve come to work at each of them, allowing me to tick off many experiences along the way. Then there’s where I am now as a 30 year old, working for a local family business called Fretus Waste Services, steering a rear loader during the dark of the night while doing commercial garbage around the north shore of Sydney. It’s the kind of gig which is very hard to come by these days, reflecting an old school way of waste collection which is disappearing. It’s really a great escape from the direction most of the collection sector is going in!
I first heard of the Fretus name back in 2015 and discovered the family’s historic presence in the waste industry, in addition to learning of their significant achievement bringing the “Rapid Rail System” into Australia from the USA. While in the process of researching the family’s earlier days of operations, I found myself on the phone with the boss discussing a job opportunity! This would see me fill a vacant position involving an alliance with a dream truck of mine and a nature of work I was now pursuing, exactly what I envisaged some 10 years earlier. Anyway it didn’t take much to satisfy Mitch and sway him down this latest employment path - the right things happen at the right time.
Apologies to anybody who was hanging out for a video of my fulltime JP5/ACCO weapon, I’ll have to keep you waiting a bit longer. In the meantime, I present this upload of the youngest vehicle in our mini fleet of four trucks! This rear loading compactor was built + delivered at the very end of 2022 to handle some new clientele and act as a reliable spare truck as required. It’s also allocated to the small Saturday run, which I alternate fortnightly with my co-worker, being the only time I regularly take it for a spin. However, my truck was off the road for a number of shifts, so it served its purpose as a back-up during that weekday period, which gave me a chance to have a good go at this new machine and of course capture some documenting footage along the way.
Firstly, it was cool to try out a modern Hino GH cab chassis to see what the latest offering is from this truck builder. It’s a great rig at least from a driving perspective, I’d have no complaints getting one of these to use permanently. They’re simple, comfy, quiet, get moving ok and visibility is sweet, what more do you want! I’d also had very little experience using Garwood equipment, so I was excited to give this 12m Powapact body a run. After testing it out a decent amount, this is the make of rear loader I’d want as a new truck with what’s on the Aussie market nowadays. I appreciate Garwood has kept their gear basic - now rare PLC controls, only the functions you need and no interlocks that affect the efficiency and ease of the job. How about the option to change between single and two-touch packer cycling, also see if you can guess during which clip autostart packer mode is on =D For the small sweep blade on this model, it takes a generous bite of the hopper! The bin shake ability in conjunction with the arrestor bar is excellent too.
I'd wanted to put together a tidy video of a newer Garwood rear loader, but didn’t expect I’d be doing it while using one myself! As usual, it’s a pain in the arse stuffing around capturing the videos on the job, yet I always enjoy meshing the clips together to see the finished result. It’s a lengthy compilation here, but you don’t often see Aussie C&I pick-ups, also not much of this garbage truck combo exists on CZcams, plus there’s the different angles, bin sizes, pack cycles, driving shots and even a 3.5t load ejection! You’ll realise this truck is very quiet as well, it operates at idle with a higher capacity hydraulic pump, which lets off plenty of noise itself, but the loudest part is the banging sound of each pack stage reaching end point. I can’t help but wonder how a larger Hino FM with a Garwood Maxipact would perform in place of my regular truck, perhaps one day I’ll find out? Enough from me, I hope this video is enjoyed, also be sure to set the picture quality to 720p!

Aussiegarbo you don't suppose this is the company that does the Easy care gardening rubbish collection!
I was also told that the sub contractor who collects them also brings a ute with a trailer and they collect the bagged and bundled green waste in that, it would definitely be a small garwood rear like this if they do use are garbage truck!
Veolia in Ryde and Kur ring gai, Urm in hunters hill and Cleanaway Hornsby only collects them as part of a booked council cleanup thought!

Great work Mitch, it's cool to see another production of yours documenting your time and experiences as a garbo and the different vehicles and roles you've experienced. Keep up the fantastic work both on the streets and on CZcams!

When I saw the title said “Fretus” I was expecting to see an ACCO JP5 as the thumbnail, disappointed mate. You forgot to mention how good the lifter teeth are on the Garwoods, you don’t need to be real precise with your bin placement, the way they’re shaped means they just slide on when you raise the lifer. With an UrBin or SPAK you gotta be wacking those bins on with precision!
I’m currently driving a newer version of this body at the moment on clean ups, newest truck in our fleet. I quite like the compacts, the newer version features an upgraded control panel, means you don’t need to use your full wing span to hold the bins onto the lifter while one hand is on the buttons lol. I’m sure you’ve already figured it out but in case you haven’t, you can just fit x3 240s on the lifter, deforms the bin on one side on mine cause we got the runner grab handles in the way.
How good are the Hinos too, I love how the hazard toggle switch is on the steering stalks, better then leaning across the dash to flick em on like in an ACCO lol. Just wish they had a bit more go to them, great on a smaller body like the compacts but a with a fully loaded maxipact body it’ll take you about 3 business days to get to 60km/h. Another quality video mate 👌🏻

Sorry to disappoint mate, my last RL uploads were of JP5s, so I couldn't go and do the same again, just imagine the insanity on my part! Who knows when I'll put the Fretus JP5 footage up now but, could be in 6 months, could be in 6 years 😅 Yes good point about the lifter teeth, now that you say that I recall 157 at URM and remember being able to drop the bin however and it'd sit by itself. Guess I didn't realise with the truck in the video coz I've just been so damn accurate placing them in the perfect spot 😝 Funnily enough I never even thought to put 3x 240s on this lifter, so used to only being able to do 2x on the regular truck that it didn't even cross my mind! Don't have a great deal of pick-ups where it's necessary but, mostly singles or pairs, that job at 8:40 is where the most multiple 240s is found. I've wondered about the modern day 6x4 Hinos and moving power, even found the older single axles I drove at Watts all went hard, but that Auburn side arm was the newest big one I've driven and it wasn't too mighty. Would think 10 years later they made some beef up advancements, but perhaps not 🤔 Just as I stated my curiosity at the end of this video's description about using a Maxipact Hino on my run, well it turns out I'll find out in about 6 months, last Monday got informed there's a brand new truck on order for me 🤯 The old ACCO is getting up there in age and costly to keep on the road 💔 However, exciting times ahead with a fresh start 💘

    Hey Mitch
Do you got time to head up to Townsville and film there garbage trucks. Townsville city council has DAF’S, DENNIS EAGLES, IVECO STRAILS and there starting to get brand new Mercedes trucks. However magnetic island only has 1 truck and that is the single axle superior pak Dennis eagle.

No, I don't have time to video trucks in Townsville. I've already told you I'm not going around everywhere to film garbage trucks anymore. I only capture what I want to and easily can, please don't ask me about videos again.
