Bonnet pins.
Hey dig your videos. One thing I would have done is to put Window caulking between the hood mounts and hood. You will get water in there and it will rust out. It's a little bit of window caulking and wipe away the excess. Makes a good seal.

I have always been on the fence about the bonnet pins and still going to be there. The voice over works well takes a different approach. Chris Fix does it very well

I actually had a pop shield on my mic. Makes me wonder if it actually helped at all... hahaha

Great work, did you know there’s a drill bit starter punch? I believe HF might have it too, it’s a tool that looks like a pincel and you push it against the pice that you will be drilling and it has a spring that retracts and it punches a small hole, it’s pretty handy
I installed bonnet (hood) pins on my Mk1 back in the 70s but also added lower front straps (the small leather buckle types) as the catch never seemed strong enough. We'll, for the speeds I was doing back then! 😂
Haha! I like the look of those leather straps. Maybe those will be next who knows...
Hi Cole.. voice over was good 👍I cant believe that those staneless screws broke off like that?? (Annoying) a stainless drill bit should hopefully drill the remainder out! I was contemplating these myself what they like for vibration/ noise or are they a tiet fit!. Good show as usual 👍👍

Nice video. Like the VOT format (that’s voice on tape for your broadcast majors out there). I’m not a huge fan of hood pins like this but I think for your purpose it solves that issue of having more access. Like other said removing a hood and then where you put it on the ground or somewhere else will just continue to open up opportunities for damage to paint. The one thing that got me a little nervous in this video is as you drilled, metal shavings went everywhere in your engine bay including in little crevices that you can’t get too. That promotes rust and corrosion and you should really get those there is cleaned out as soon as possible.
Good feedback and great tip on the shavings. Those have all been shop vacced up nice and tidy in there. 👍🏼
In regards to the way you did the video I feel there is perks to either way. This was what seemed a much quicker way for you and a shorter video but on the other hand it’s nice to be along for the ride as such. Either way though is fine with me. 👍🏼

Thanks richard! I don’t have any plans to convert to a flip front. Too much work and not enough gain for me. I don’t really wanna cut up the mk1 shell either.
A bit late to the party, but wanted to say that a) voice over worked well, it didn't stand out as being "off" or weird. Seems like a good way to convey information. And b) I don't care if you or anyone else calls them hood pins or bonnet pins. I'm from New Zealand, here we call them bonnet pins. You're from the USA, there you call them hood pins. The worst thing is someone who tries to "correct" someone else's way of speaking in their country.
More time for describing what is going on and how to do it, in the meantime I had a feeling that I was missing out a few of “ohh eff it!”... thisway it is more technical and less personal. But just my 2 cents
Thanks for the feedback it really helps. Sounds like I need to find a happy medium between the two.
About the two styles... When you narrate over the video you are able to give a more detailed, ordered, and clearer explanation of what is going on. You have had a chance to script and edit what you are going to say and that is helpful. It is also probably easier to do the actual work that way.
The advantage of explanation/video "on the fly", is your personality is able to come through... people can really relate to you through this more casual style. I think that is important.

Did you consider push button hood pins at all? Seems like it would give a little cleaner look.
The voice over was a good method in my opinion. Both ways are good so whatever you find better I’d say go with.
Yeah I mentioned it right at the beginning of the video. I would have preferred those but after installing them the spring rate inside them just wasn’t enough to “pop” the hood. So I went with standard style pins.

The Minivation hinges come with an option for a strengthening kit for this exact reason, don't they? I don't think it's that pricey an add on. Not knocking what you've done, though :-)
Not that I’m aware of? Although I got these quite a few years ago so maybe they recently released them? Or maybe I just missed them! Hahaha
@@classicminidiy I think they've done the kits for a while - I would imagine to primarily cater for the wafer thin steel of the later, MPi models. Not the most useful information for you to be given after the fact though, I appreciate!

Cole, what method did you use to secure the front of the bonnet? Is it still using the stock latch?
Hey yup its the factory latch on the front. No change there.
So how do they work? Do you unlatch the front as normal, then pull the clips out of the pins and lift the whole bonnet off?

Love watching your videos as always. I respect your request for feedback on the style of video, i can't say im a huge fan of it much prefer watching you narrate as you are doing the job. Otherwise it sounds too scripted. Anyways thats just my feedback and thank you for the videos you do they help me loads with working on my mini 😁!
Sorry, don't see the point of those ugly pins when you already had a super mod like those Minivation hinges.
I mentioned at the beginning the minivation hinges caused the weld failure on the back of the hood. So this was the least expensive fix for that failure.
@@classicminidiy Reinforcing the hood (and weld it) is quite cheap. I understand that painting the hood would be costly but I don't think you couldn't afford it... Come on Cole, your car deserves the effort!

I'm in favor of the voice over style video. Hope you don't need to access the wiper motor. I have hood pins and the wiper motor is terrible to get at.
I like your videos, but power tools and flip flops, meh
I have since learned the error of my ways. I only wear close toed shoes these days when working on the car.
