- The Shop Apprentice tuned 3. I thought it would be a good idea to break out my woodworking skills and build him a wagon that will be the envy of the known and unknown universe. Follow along and see how I get this wagon built.

Every kid should have a wagon. That one will be around for Shop Apprentices grandchildren what a wonderful legacy
Agreed. I loved my wagon as a kid. I hope my little guys loves this one.
Mike.. your build and craftsman is impeccable but knowing the time spent with the " kiddos" being pulled by daddy is priceless. Enjoy every second with them that you can. They grow up fast !! Thanks 😎
Thank you very much John.
My kids are grown but they still talk about the times we spent together.
Keep being a great Dad you will be rewarded greatly.
Thank you, will do.
I paused your video when you suggested to listen to Sloop John B, opened another CZcams tab, and played Sloop John B in the background as I continued to watch your video. 1st, yes, I loved it. 2nd, both videos ended at about the same time. Perfection all around--including the completed wagon.
Thats great to hear. Thank you very much.
Mike. You are the Man! Way to take care of your son like a Grade A dad. There is so much to this project that just makes me happy seeing another Dad care as much as I do about my own kids.
Thank you.
Some people may watch this and think, "It's for his son and he built it the same way he builds everything. He didn't do anything extra. No special attention for his own son." Those people would be wrong. In fact, you build EVERYTHING with the same care and attention to detail as something you build for your own child!
You may want to add the date built to the bottom, along with the date you and your son make repairs to the wagon X years from now. Your grandchild will appreciate it. :)
my papa hand built me wooden toys when I was little, a rocking horse, a train, some trucks. I really never truly appreciated them until I started wandering around youtube watching stuff like this.
Thank you. I like the idea of dating this piece. I'm going to do that.
Mike Farrington Mike just an FYI..... don’t use a sharpie to sign it... A pro Woodturner and woodworker I know said they can bleed and or fade. He said go to an artist store or Hobby Lobby and get an acid free marker and then what ever you sign or date will last a lifetime.
@@ronh9384 hmm, my papa used a wood burner. properly permanent :)
@@thefirebuilds Have to agree. If you're going to sign it, burn it!
When I watch your videos I feel nostalgia, like I used to watch Norm Abram build projects on the New Yankee Workshop. Thank you!
That is such a nice compliment. I was just watching some old Norm videos last night.
What a great birthday surprise for the Shop Apprentice 😃👌👏👏👏👏
Thank you. So far its been a fun and useful addition. We take it out almost every weekend. Trips to the lake, the park, it really helps hauling kids and gear.
I went through four or five sets of radio headphones. Something kept going wrong with each one. I finally got myself a pair of Bluetooth noise cancellation headphones. Now I can listen to audiobooks all day with no wires getting in the way. I just hope they last longer than the other ones. Not only can I listen to books all day, I don't have to listen to my assistant. It's a win-win so far. I love your wedge cutting idea. I'm stealing it.
Thank you. Good tip.
Mike, Fine Woodworking better try and hire you soon, because they won't be able to afford it if they wait. The quality of your videos is so much better than what I pay $100 a year for Unlimited! Keep killing it brother.
Yep, just brilliant! So satisfying I imagine too Mike!
Thank you very much Matthew, somehow I don't think that is going to happen. You Keep watching and I'll keep posting.
Mike,
Always enjoy your workmanship and your thoughtful additions to the video. What I write about, is great hidden snippet of working in the reverse on spreading the glue with your finger and running the film backwards. Watching, I think wait a minute I need to rerun that. Nice job and very clever.
Thank you. Thats just me trying to keep the viewers on their toes.
Great project. You did it like a true woodworker, with a lotta love and patience and attention to every little detail. I put a little mattress in my son's wagon so the ride doesn't get too bumpy when strolling through uneven terrain with him in his little wagon.
Thank you. Its been a great wagon so far.
Nice project. Be sure to get The Shop Apprentice some safety goggles. He will be overjoyed and safe at the same time. My grandson Christopher wears them whenever he is in my shop. He's 8 now.
Thank you. Will do.
Really enjoyed this build. From the woodwork to your narration. Excellent. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice build, thanks. Probably the best part is the "shop apprentice" can say "my dad built it". Cheers, David.
Thank you David.
Lovely workmanship. I'm sure the shop apprentice will have hours of fun with this. Best wishes
Thank you, I hope you are right.
Just lovely! What a joy your channel is. After watching the fire in Paris last night and the utter sadness I felt for my adopted country, this has really cheered me up, so thank you Mike. I think M. Macron has a real opportunity to let the amazingly talented craftsman (en français - Artisans) of France re-build that beautiful iconic centrepiece.
Thank you. I must admit I am truly heart broken over what has happen to Notre Dame. I am lucky enough to have been able to travel to Paris a few times. Notre Dame is a place I never miss, I have spent many hours sitting in, walking around, studying, and absorbing all it has to offer. I had already planned to take my kids to visit, now they probably won't be kids by the time its rebuilt. Lets hope its restored to its former glory within my life.
@@MikeFarrington If you do decide to come over again, you are forever cordially invited à chez nous while you are over here.
@@joeatkins4470 Thank you, that is very kind.
The all-terrain Rosebud! :D
Ha! Love it.
Those wedges really spice up the joinery. An heirloom for the shop apprentice. :) Great job Mike.
Thank you Josh.
That is one nice wagon. I wouldn't say no to riding around in it.
Why thank you Shaun. If you find yourself in the Denver area, I'll happy give you a tow.
I remember that song and now I can’t get The Sloop John B out of my head. The first concert I went to was Beach Boys and Chicago at Angel’s stadium. Those were the good old days, when a concert consisted of two headliner bands each playing for about two hours.
Thanks for the video of the shop assistants beautiful wagon. He’ll remember it forever, just like I remember that song.
Thank you. I would love to have seen the Beach Boys in concert.
I was looking around CZcams to make a wagon and came across this video. Needless to say that you have to have a shop that's pretty well set up in order to build using this technique. Great job.
Thank you.
Always a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work - bravo Sir!
Thank you Andrew.
Quality workmanship always a pleasure to watch an artist work. The lad will enjoy it for years to come.
Thank you very much.
Looks very nice and using the wedges to hide any smal gaps in the tru Mortis is a great tip
Thanks 👍
Great project, great video as usual.
A piece that your children will remember for sure.
Be mindful with gaps in pieces for kids. I've had to change my design in the past to comply with guidelines for how big gaps in toys and furniture should be for certain ages.
Thank you.
To misquote a regular talkback radio listener quote : “Long time viewer, first time commenter.” This brings me back, I had a wooden wagon as a little girl, it used to be full of those different shaped wooden building blocks.
Thank you very much. I hope my kiddos have fond memories of this wagon too. That would be really neat.
Mike Farrington I’m sure they will. It’s the basic stuff that can be used for whatever a kids imagination can come up with that will stick with them and I’m sure that the times that you play with them with it will be a great memory for them as well. I can clearly remember pulling my baby brother around with him sitting in our old wagon. Also when they get older I’m sure that they will want to add their creative marks to it giving it even more personality. I have to say that yours looks like it is better able to handle outdoor play better than my old one could.
@@surviverskywalker6515 I really hope to see my little boy pulling his baby sister around in this very wagon. That would be really special.
Happy Birthday for your little one! Mine will be 3 years old in May, 5th. Nice gift for him, but I will make a smaller one, to attach to his little tricycle. Cheers
Ours are close in age. Thank you.
Awesome project, best part is how you recorded for the future day to show you son when his older
Good point. I hadn't thought that we could look back on this in 10 or 15 years, that will be great fun.
Amazing project and build quality. One day your kid (and maybe his kid!) will look back at on that wagon with fond memories!
Thank you. I hope you are right.
Hiya Mike , can i be your kid as well, i,m 56 but 16 in my head. This is a great way to show your son how much you love him and for him to appreciate what a talented father he has , keep the videos coming please, from an admirer across the pond.
Thank you. I have room for another kid, sure.
Love the design and finish Mike. Not to mention the joy such a well made toy will bring to the shop apprentice!
Thank you Paul.
What a great gift for the apprentice! It'll create a ton of loving memories for him, which is a priceless gift in and of itself.
I also love all the details you put in, including in the video (reverse glue spread!) ;)
Hopefully your son will at some point take an interest in wood working as well, I can only imagine how fulfilling it would be to have your kids help around the shop and start to develop themselves and their own styles.
Thank you. We will see in the coming years if he will take an interest. I think it would be fun to have him around, but I wouldn't pressure him to get into woodworking.
@@MikeFarrington Oh absolutely, they should do what interests them, not what interests the parents :)
Hopefully he at least creates fond memories of working together and sometimes that can inspire people later in their lives!
you know you are a lucky child when you get a through wedged mortise wagon 😂
cool job as always Mike
Thank you.
When the video popped up as a suggestion, I thought "wood wagon, that is a cool idea. I'll watch it." Then I realized it was a Mike Farrington video and knew I was in for a special treat. Great build and awesome video as always. You're videos some of the best on CZcams. If you're not having to turn sponsors away daily, something is terribly wrong.
Happy to hear you like the video. Thank you very much. The sponsor thing is an interesting topic, the comment section is probably not the place to talk about it....
I remember making my little boys a miniature apprentices saw stool. Dunno why but they loved it!
Totally awesome, kids projects are fun.
Contender for the best workshop on CZcams
Thank you. Its a work in progress.
Listening to music that reminds you of your Dad while being a great Dad! Nice touch. Where is my expert level floating bathroom shelf video!!?
Thank you Tom. Let me check on the floating shelf video.
Excellent wagon...much,much nicer than the old red wagon i had as a child
Thank you.
I'd liked to have such a gift from my father when l was young. Perfect work!!!
Thank you very much Andrew.
Another fantastic project and video Mike. You keep the bar high for all of us!
Thank you Geek.
Nice build Mike. At 1:42-1:46 thats a really sneaky n clever edit of reversing the video and undoing the glue spread. Hope the apprentice had a great b-day
Its like magic. I'm just trying to keep everyone awake.
Enjoyed watching this one and looking forward to building toys for my grandchildren. I was in Lee Valley the other day and they had a great little wagon that had optional 4 little skis that you simply swap out with the wheels for more fun in the snow. Together you both gave me great inspiration:)
Skis would be totally cool. Great idea.
As always, great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Keith, my pleasure.
I do believe that might just be the very Best Wagon ever Built !!!
Thank you very much.
Way to take care of your workers in the shop. Great job Mike!
Thank you Mike.
always love watching your videos mike. a great project for the little one.
Thank you very much.
Beautiful looking wagon Mike! Thanks for sharing the video with us.👌😎👍JP
Thank you.
Your very welcome Mike!😎
That’s probably one of the first projects of yours that I even come close to having the adequate skill level to attempt.
As for your song of choice for this video, I immediately found that song online and realized that I knew that song, just didn’t know its title.
Its a great song for sure.
Another great project that no one saw coming.
Thank you.
Great build!
Thank you.
Nice job! Thanks for another top notch video.
Thank you Curt.
Loved this project Mike.
Thank you very much John.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY APPRENTICE !!!!! Great build, Mike! :)
Thank you very much.
Hey!
A piece of phenomenal work! For now - You've got the channel I enjoy most! Greetings from Poland
Thank you, thats great to hear.
Man oh man!!! Absolutely fantastic bud. And the railing did finish the wagon off nicely. Another fantastic video from one of the best. Dirty Jersey out!!
Thank you very much.
Yayyy!!! New video by Mike. :D
Weeee!!!!
As always, perfect performance
Thank you!
Awesome work as always Mike!
Thank you very much.
Looks like it will last a long time!
I hope so. Time will tell.
Very nice wagon Mike. I’m sure it will be treasured!
Ron
Thank you. I hope you are right.
Beautiful project! Love your videos. I look forward to your song/podcast/audiobook recommendations. Love the quiet anti-hype production and all the quality tips and wry humor ("real page turner!" 😉). Now wear your safety glasses so you can always see those cute kids.😊
Thank you very much. Fortunately I just started wearing glasses so that problem will solve itself.
Great video
That you.
My grand daughter loves her new wagon. I'd love show a pic of it.
Thats great to hear. Send me an email via my website.
Great job
Thank you.
Great wagon project and the perfect present for a 3 year old. I am currently in Hong Kong with my 3 and 7 year old granddaughters and having a blast. I also made three kumiko lanterns one for each of my children, will send you picks when I get home to Philly. BTW The Beach Boys and The Beatles had an echo chamber of inspiration in the mid-60s, with the latter’s “Rubber Soul” inspiring “Pet Sounds,” which in turn inspired “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” if you haven’t heard Pet Sounds give it a spin.
That is a really good piece of music trivia. I'm going to go back and listen to them back to back looking for influence. Thank you.
Your song recommendations never disappoint.
Farrington video is out!! Happy, happy, joy-joy!!!
Wheeee!
I just really like your videos...thanks.
Thank you very much Bert.
Great wagon for a top-rated apprentice. Thanks!
Thank you. The apprentice really likes the wagon.
Guys got one hell of a shop, damn
Looks like a work of art.
Thank you, we have used it a ton. It's now got a few dents from use, but still looks pretty cool.
Love the chisel macro - nicely done.
Thank you. I picked up a macro lens recently.
Mike Farrington - well we appreciate the setup time, and also appreciate the polish on the chisel!
Beautiful. Now you need to add some "Radio Flyer" type classic removeable stake-sides for the true retro look and feel.
I thought about that, but ended up keeping it simple. I like the idea though.
Subscribed, Liked and Bought!
Thank you very much Mark.
Another good one!
Thank you.
Always enjoy my visit to "The Boardroom" ;)
Thank you Chris.
Your apprentice for sure was very happy when he received the present! And by the way nice shop, hope as soon as possible to own one and greetings from Romania.
Thank you.
Totally sub'd. And you're so right about Sloop John B. The wife and i had Wouldn't it be Nice in our wedding ceremony -- another classic. Looking forward to more cool projects on your channel.
Thank you. Great to have you onboard. Wouldn't it be Nice is another great song!
Beautiful!
Thanks James!
Looks great.
Thank you.
You are a Great Dad!
I am old enough, and lucky enough to have seen The Beach Boys live, and many other great “old” bands in concert. No one like the great ones. But I suppose the kids today would just roll their eyes. Well let them. They weren’t there.
Thank you. Seeing The Breach Boys live would have been really neat.
It was The Beach Boys and Chicago in an outdoor show. They then all took the stage together and made some MUSIC! Also got to see Bob Dylan and The Band before he got too weird. Good Old Days. I was friends with the Guys in the band Kansas. Rich always called me to be his goalie in fooseball when they were in town. I saw them when they were called “White Clover” in the National Guard Bld In Atchison KS in 1972 or 1973.
@@MJ-nb1qn Thats pretty cool. I have a pretty big fan of Kansas as well, I had no idea that they went by a different name for a time.
Love it.. u made it by heart and soul fr ur sonn love it..
Thank you. Its a real treat to build a project for my kiddo.
You are a genius mate!
Thank you, but that is giving me way too much credit.
I liked before I watched 😊 been waiting a long time for a new upload 😋 absolutely love your videos
Thank you very much. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next one.
Loved it
Thank you.
I have watched nearly all of your videos and it still surprises me when you play a clip backwards. "Wait! How did he un-spread that glue?" Ohhhhhhhhh
Ha! Gotta keep you on your toes.
I need one of those for beer runs!
There will be a cooler in this thing some time this summer, and there will be beer in the cooler. No joke, I sized this to fit one of our small coolers.
Mike Farrington Man, that needed to be an end cap to the video.
P.S. The beer cooler fits perfect. [Fade to black]
@@Purveyorofawesome I like it!
Terrific!
Thank you.
I love it mike. By the way. I had taco Tuesday at work tonight and no way of cutting a through mortise would have helped my blowout.
-Ben
Ha! Good luck with that!
loved the build quite informative, I did not see where I could get the plans though, would like to get them
Sorry about that, check my website. Its just my name.
I think the screws holding on the wheels will pull out under a load. I would use carriage bolts putting the rounded smooth side on the inside of the wagon where the kiddos are and flat washers, lock washers, and acorn nuts on the bottom. More durable and safe for the kids that way.
Thank you for the input. I think carriage bolts would be stronger, but the screws I used are strong enough.
Awesome thanks
My pleasure.
Great camera work on your video and great project. Your close-ups are actually that.
Thank you very much.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos and the fact that you remain humble and light hearted in your work. Clearly you love what your doing.
As a show of my appreciation hopefully I will be introducing you to song collaboration you might not have heard but may become one of your very favorites.
Check out Lorrie Morgan singing "Don;t worry baby" with the Beach Boys.
Thank you very much and thank you for the song recommendation. I'll look it up.
Nice glue technique Mike!!!
Ha!
Sloop John B is great, and so is the wagon!
Thank you. Yes it is!
Sloop John B, my fav BB song. Touché, Mike.
Its a really great song.
Nice video like always, being 62 years old, I heard that song many times, it also reminds me that i'm broke but home!!! I never had a wagon when young, my parents did not believe in toys, but today I have my wagon, it's called a trailer...lolllll By the way, when is that second kid coming up? He will be the beneficiary of long walks in the wagon!!!
Thank you. The second kid is 4 weeks old. We age beginning to settle in to being a family of four.
Sloop John B...always a favorite. As are the videos. Keep up the good work. #denverstrong
Great song for sure. Thank you. Wheeee Denver!
