We noticed some people aren't aware of the chin weld when using a rifle, so we created a short video to clarify what it is, and some instances when using a chin weld might be better than a cheek weld.

Great topic. Cheek weld I have a million times. But if I am being honest, chin weld is a new term for me. The fact that you demonstrated both the chin and cheek makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing.

Taller mounts are also quite more ergonomic in the sense that you don’t need to hunch your neck down and be more tense. It also gives better peripheral by having a more natural and heads up shooting, as if you were shooting a pistol and merely bringing the sights up to your eye line instead of your eyes to the sights.
Downside is that too tall of a mount means it’s more difficult for extended periods of time during prone and the gun is overall larger and slightly heavier with more mass.

for me cheek weld is a week of my ear ringing even with good ear pro. Chin seems to reduce this but thats just me. Lower 1/3 co witness with a chin weld i can shoot all day. But that cheek weld seems to funnel the shockwave right to my ear.

Gonna try the chin weld this week because I have the same issue and my cheek is actually bruised 🥴

I use the chin weld on my ar pistol. To be legal, for now, i removed the brace. I instalked a carry handle with a red dot on top. I was skeptical but after trying it i love it! Its faster than it used to be and i can still use my flip up front with the peep rear.

Generally I do this instinctively, but just talking about it brought to my attention this something I need to pay attention too, to insure I'm not moving the rifle rather than being consistent with my hold, especially factoring in hold overs if you want to be accurate as possible

    Disclaimers:
    1. I’ve only just started bench-rest, long-range precision rifle shooting 4 months ago, so I’m a beginning beginner.
    2. I’ve got a small-framed face and head.
    3. I use both good-quality, in-ear and over-ear hearing protection.
    4. I’ve only shot a rifle chambered in 6.5 mm Creedmoor.
In my very limited experience, using a proper cheek weld tends to displace the cup of my over-ear hearing protection (no matter how hard I try). Despite also having in-ear hearing protection, this has led to short-term tinnitus and very significant right-sided sensorineural hearing loss (I’m a right-handed shooter), and am receiving therapy for it, in the hope that it’s reversible.
I was thinking of using a chin weld in order to avoid interference with my over-ear hearing protection cups.
Will this affect accuracy, say, over 400-800 metres, assuming all the other fundamentals are in place? I simply don’t know. Perhaps an experienced PRS person might give me some hardly-needed advice.
If not, I might have to abandon this newly-found love of mine to preserve my hearing acuity.
Any polite suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

To get a small group size, you need a good cheek weld. A good cheek weld gives better consistency over a chin weld. That's the principle.

What chassis are you running? Seems like this should be a pretty easy fix with a properly set up stock + optic height.

It's a bit so I hope you've gotten through your hearing issues. I have tinnitus from not wearing ear plugs at concerts and I've definitely struggled a few times with it in the past. I wanted to say that after some time, you sort of make peace with it and move on and it doesn't bother you much anymore. Make no mistake, I'm not advocating to just accept hearing damage. ALWAYS use ear pro. I'm just saying that the struggle will end.

I noticed the stock sits higher in my shoulder when I look down the optic. Figured something wasn't right, but this explains it.

Didn't know it had a name but I used the chin weld (modified) years ago pre optics. My body armor made cheek weld very difficult. I rested the butt stock on the top of my armor and looked over my rifle.

4th point: AK with Eotech/Holo sight
Many AKs old and modern (like AK12/15) have stocks with lower line profiles than the classic AR15 stocks, when you mount optics on these AKs the cheek weld no longer works and you have to switch to a chin weld

Great vid! A chin weld might be good for a shooter who has arthritis in their neck (like I do) and can't always bring their head down enough to have a solid cheek weld. My question is, does this apply to target shooting using a red dot with a tactical shotgun? Being a tall person it's often difficult to get my head low enough to establish a consistent cheek weld. Would a chin weld be a good alternative?

  • @jackbrooks6451
    @jackbrooks6451 Před 2 měsíci

Another reason for the chin weld: wearing a gas mask and helmet on an entry team. No way you're going to get a cheek weld with all your gear on. It's also easier to use a chin weld and a riser with NODs.

Thanks to too much loud music in my youth as well as shooting without earpro many years ago.
I need to save what little hearing I have left.
I found I cannot get a good cheek weld wearing muffs while shooting my ARs so I end up wearing earplugs which just don't seem to work as well.
Now if all of my optics set up about an inch higher I would be fine but I hate the raise my optics up that high

If one brings the optic higher and it's not for nvg or rds on an acog, why not add something like a cheek pad or a buttstock that allows for cheek weld adjustment? They can't be all unreliable.
