Putting Together a Kydex Cheek Riser for a Rifle Stock - Non-Destructive Cheek Rest!

  • Our long-range Savage Axis rifle needs one last modification. The Boyds Pro Varmint laminate stock has a raised cheekpiece, but it's not nearly tall enough to get a good cheek weld. With a little foam and Kydex we can make the rifle more comfortable to use.
    The materials needed to make this cheek riser were inexpensive. I bought some black Kydex V (recycled Kydex) from Amazon and some velcro straps from a local military surplus store. I used some packing foam for the spacer material.
    The tools I used: scissors, tin snips, a utility knife, a sewing machine, a Dremel rotary tool and cutoff wheel, and a heat gun from Harbor Freight. With a coupon, the heat gun cost less than $10.
    Adding an inch or so of height to the rifle stock's comb with a cheek rest will make it much more comfortable to use in the next long-range match. I have tested this budget rifle in two 600-yard matches, but we still need to nail down the elusive 1,000-yard match. Unfortunately, the last one was canceled due to thunderstorms. Hopefully Tulsa's Red Castle Gun Club will reschedule.

    You'll literally feel the difference when you're able to completely relax with a good cheek weld, scope dialed in on target, rifle at complete rest, and bipod loaded securely when the sear pops. It's gonna have you thinking " I love it when a plan comes together" as your scorer says "X" !

    You are very talented with gun smithing and do it yourself projects. I loved how you constructed that cheek rest.
    Just something to think about is you could get that perforated rubber matting that they sell in the silverware isle in Walmart. They have a few different colors and also just black and white. You cut it to the size of your kitchen drawer and place it on the bottom of it, then put the silverware plastic organizer tray on top of it so it won't slide around. It would be perfect to put in between your kydex riser and the wooden stock. It would make sure that it doesn't ever slide or shift and probably would increase comfort by softening any vibrations felt on your cheek. Just thought I would give my two cents.
    Thanks again for the video and the information you gave us.
    Thumbs up and God Bless

    Very nice job and video, thank you. DIY projects are fun, cost savings, and gives one a sense of accomplishment. For those here complaining why you just did not pay, well when you are lazy you can go ahead and buy it and be done with and NOT look for DIY projects right??? so go ahead and pay $100+ for a piece of plastic with straps.

    I have an axis in 308. I’ve heard that the downfall of these rifles is that the 1/10 twist rifling is pressed in, not cut in...
    Mine shoots fine, haven’t pushed it out passed 500yrds yet

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  Před 5 lety +1

      From what I hear, button rifling leaves a rough mess behind, but it works anyway. It seems like any method, properly done, is effective.

    Why didn't you just order the stock from boyds with the adjustable comb on it? If you buy the piece yourself they seem to be $40usd and boyds upgrade is $60usd which would save a lot of hassle for someone who isn't a professional wood worker for only $20 extra

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  Před 7 lety +1

      That would be my recommendation. I bought the plain stock so I could meet the original budget requirements and keep the whole build under $500.

  • @peterkolovos3079

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  Před 6 lety

      The initial build was artificially limited to $500. The next build (12FV) won't have a cap like that.

      This particular foam was pretty expensive, and I can see why. It's been in my garage for years, and it's every bit as spritely as when it was new. I don't think there is much of anything that can degrade it. I checked out your site and I'm following you on Twitter. You make some really cool stuff.

      No, since this was my first rifle stock build I decided not to record it. If it looks like there is interest I might put one together at a later date. It's not extremely difficult, but parts of it are very critical and precise.

    Great job, I also did a video on a diy kydex cheek riser with the drilling method (czcams.com/video/v7StfOZYFmA/video.html). Also currently working on a non destructive solution: You can have better variability by strapping one piece of kydex on using velcro and sliding the second peace up and down over the first one.
