- In this issue of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine series (No. 85), viewers are treated to a short documentary on the U.S. Navy’s Antarctic expedition Operation Highjump, a 1946-1947 mission to Antarctica to establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV, assess the feasibility of maintaining a permanent base, and further American understanding of the continent. The film begins with aerial footage of Antarctica, a map of the continent, and footage of men framing buildings and carving ice blocks during construction of the first Little America exploration bases (1929-1941). Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and men gather in a tent during one of the early expeditions (00:48). A plane taxis on a snowy runway (01:30); a dogsled moves across the snow. Admiral Byrd, heading the Navy’s Task Force 68, and Real Admiral Richard H. Cruzen prepare to leave on Operation Highjump in 1946 (02:05). Viewers see the expedition’s ships, planes (including the amphibious Martin PBM Mariner), and helicopters (what appears to be a Sikorsky R-4). Men pose with equipment and arctic clothing. Several men work with huskies and wrap their paws (03:00); the film shows the huskies at their kennel in New Hampshire. The first units of the expedition set sail for Antarctica. A ship (presumably the flagship USS Mount Olympus, passes a massive iceberg (03:58). Whales swim in the arctic waters. A ship passes through an icefield (04:37). A helicopter takes off from one of the ships to go scout. The USCGC Icebreaker Northwind breaks through ice so other ships can follow (05:10). The USS Mount Olympus is frozen stuck in the ice (05:27). The Navy submarine USS Sennet is stuck in ice; footage shows the freed Sennet returning to the U.S. after it is determined that it isn’t safe for the sub to continue on the mission. The Central Group ships make landfall in Whales Bay near the Little America base (06:53). Men anchor a ship into the ice by freezing a large piece of timber in the ice. A Navy man offers his hand to a penguin. Scouts head out on cross country skis and find the previous Little America base buried in snow and ice (07:55). Men dig out ice and snow and enter the below-ground base. A Navy captain locates the main entrance. Dog teams pull sleds (09:15); steel mats are laid down to bridge a crevasse. A penguin watches as men set up tents. Douglas R4D transport planes (Navy designation for Douglas C-47) take off from carrier USS Philippine Sea (09:56). The large planes land on air strip at Little America. Byrd climbs out of the plane and greets the men of the task force. Alligator LVTs, modified for cold weather, head to rock pillar mountains, presumably the Transantarctic Mountains (10:50). There is a good aerial shot of Little America IV (11:20). On the snowy ground, seals scoot around for photographers. Divers of the Navy’s Underwater Demolition Team drop into the icy water and pose for the camera (11:55). There is a shot of a massive iceberg floating into the Bay of Whales (12:30). The film then cuts to the sailing ships of the Eastern Group, where Captain George J. Dufek crosses a line between the USS Brownson and Pine Island (12:50), but the line breaks and he falls into the sea. A motor whaler retrieves the captain from the icy water. A Mariner mapping plane flies overhead. A Navy man pretends to box with a penguin (14:22). With summer coming to a close, the men prepare to depart. The Douglas R4Ds are left behind as planned. Aboard a ship, men review the aerial photographs of Antarctica. Task Force 68 sails through the icy waters heading back to the U.S., concluding the film.
Operation Highjump, officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946-1947, was a United States Navy operation organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr., USN (Ret), Officer in Charge, Task Force 68, and led by Rear Admiral Richard H. Cruzen, USN, Commanding Officer, Task Force 68. Operation Highjump commenced 26 August 1946 and ended in late February 1947. Task Force 68 included 4,700 men, 13 ships, and 33 aircraft. Operation Highjump's primary mission was to establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV.

I have a famous Italian encyclopedia from 1948. It is written that during the expedition of Admiral Byrd, in 1946, an ice-free area was discovered in Antarctica, with lakes and green grasslands. A hot area. There are so many mysteries in Antarctica. Sooner or later the truth will be known.

I spent 4 months on Ross Island at McMurdo the American base in Antarctica in summer 1999. The base is on NZ dependency land so that the Americans arent restricted by the Antarctic treaty which expressly forbids mineral or oil exploration. I ran a hydroponic greenhouse growing veggies for the base.
Winter-over crew told me that basically every day during the winter they saw UFOs. So much is hidden about Antarctica. Admiral Byrd was one who saw things we may only speculate about. I personally believe his diary reports of entering middle earth. He only stood to lose his reputation by speaking of such things so he held these things secret until ok his death bed. Lots more hidden to this day.

I spent seven Antarctic summers, a total of thirty nine months taking care of the boats and boat motors at Palmer Station on Anver's island. People at our station saw flying saucers too. An interesting occurrence that we saw was the "green flash" (Google it) that happened just as the sun dipped below the horizon. It's a round green glow that rises slightly above the horizon for a few seconds. A similar but much rarer occurrence is the "green spikes" that rise even higher above the horizon as the sun sets. I have seen the green flash many times but only saw the green spikes once. At times the laws of physics don't seem to apply to Antarctica. I have seen things that I can't explain.
I’m quite sure there is something being hidden from us there. Not sure if it’s a large hole containing a hidden paradise from the after effect of the planet that collided with earth. Or a large base created by what I can assume is aliens. The nazi expedition gives clues too

My Uncle was involved in this operation when he was in the Navy. He got an Bachelor's degree in Journalism when he got out became the head editor of some paper I think. Then he reenlisted in the Air Force and they had him check himself into a nuthouse so if he said anything no one would believe him and he went crazy and lost it all.

Also, on google Earth it seems that area's are either blurred out, completely copied from other images, or CGI has been used to erase images of what is really there.

I scroll over to antartica and it seems like as if some of the areas have been blurred and airbrushed it looks...unnatural. Really strange but again i could just be losing my marbles here. 6:25 the stretch of ice continued as a barrier of sorts, there was a “miraculous” entrance into which the ship could maneuver slightly inland, but not by much. Captain James Cook had noted in 1773 that the Antarctic ice wall stretched for thousands of miles with no entrance.
. It was the edge , the ship fell over and they had to jump out or fall over with the ship and die. Small amount jumped the rest died . Admiral Byrd is who Indian Jones suppose to be . The elites didn't like him doing interviews talking about it . They couldn't shut him up so he was killed.

My father went on that trip! I have a lot of documents .... dad said when they got back to the states in international waters that if they took anything from Antarctica that they are required to dump it overboard and when they went ashore all seamen and their bags were searched! My Father said he dumped a good amount of rock overboard which me got from Antarctica

1000 Hours- We are crossing over the small mountain range and still proceeding northward as best as can be ascertained. Beyond the mountain range is what appears to be a valley with a small river or stream running through the center portion. There should be no green valley below! Something is definitely wrong and abnormal here! We should be over Ice and Snow! To the portside are great forests growing on the mountain slopes. Our navigation Instruments are still spinning, the gyroscope is oscillating back and forth!
1005 Hours- I alter altitude to 1400 feet and execute a sharp left turn to better examine the valley below. It is green with either moss or a type of tight knit grass. The Light here seems different. I cannot see the Sun anymore. We make another left turn and we spot what seems to be a large animal of some kind below us. It appears to be an elephant! NO!!! It looks more like a mammoth! This is incredible! Yet, there it is! Decrease altitude to 1000 feet and take binoculars to better examine the animal. It is confirmed - it is definitely a mammoth-like animal! Report this to base camp.
1030 Hours- Encountering more rolling green hills now. The external temperature indicator reads 74 degrees Fahrenheit! Continuing on our heading now. Navigation instruments seem normal now. I am puzzled over their actions. Attempt to contact base camp. Radio is not functioning!
1130 Hours- Countryside below is more level and normal (if I may use that word). Ahead we spot what seems to be a city!!!! This is impossible! Aircraft seems light and oddly buoyant. The controls refuse to respond!! My GOD!!! Off our port and star board wings are a strange type of aircraft. They are closing rapidly alongside! They are disc-shaped and have a radiant quality to them. They are close enough now to see the markings on them. It is a type of Swastika!!! This is fantastic. Where are we! What has happened. I tug at the controls again. They will not respond!!!! We are caught in an invisible vice grip of some type!

During the closing stages of World War 2, a number of interesting events occured. One was the little known "lost convoy" mere weeks before the capture of berlin, a large Nazi convoy of crew and equipment (including a large number of youth from the eugenics program) were loaded onto ships and submarines. It was later discovered most of them had sailed to Argentina, but that is a different story.
Several however were not accounted for. Also many thousands of tons of cement manufactured in german factories according to production figures was likewise unnacounted for, and although years later many previously unknown coastal bunkers were uncovered, still not enough to account for the production. Anyway - on capturing berlin, a number of documents inadequately destroyed mentioned a hidden antartic base, presumably built over a geothermally active region, accessible mainly by submarine only.
Quite a while after the end of the war, a number of the unaccounted for submarines were found between south america and antarctica, where their crews scuttled them and surrendered to US warships. Later discrete investigations of the wrecks found that whatever cargo had been on them was long since unloaded, finding only empty boxes and similar materials on board. Only adding weight to the suspicion that a German base existed. The crews also refused to elaborate what they had been doing or where they had been.
The second interesting thing was a British antarctic base reported an incident with scruffy uniformed solders in a glacial Ice cave. Essentially confirming the documents. The british immediately sent a convoy of ships to investigate. The details of this mission are somewhat vague, but shortly after the British left again, then the Americans, likely as an extension of project paperclip launched operation highjump - which as a post war operation was officially recorded as a research mission, but unofficially they were well equipped and heavily armed soldiers. In the course of the mission they allegedly had encounters with the now infamamous "foo fighters" and an aircraft and one or more ships were lost in vague circuimstances. Quite a number of explosives and munitions were expended in the process (presumably they bombed the glacier in question) Interestingly The specifics of this mission (including if they had found the rumored base) had the curious destinction of remaining one of the few post war missions that had remained classified well beyond the turn of the century.
One final curious tidbit of this mission was the family of one of the solders who were lost during project highjump spent years trying to find out what happened to them, and tracked down one of the missing ships (presumably the one her son was stationed on) around 30 years later being chopped up in a south american coastal scrap yard. For whatever reason the ship had secretely remained in the area until it had been decomissioned and sent to the scrap yard.
Byrd's writings and statements confirm most of this that isn't otherwise validated. Most of this has been accepted as factual many times over. Then there was Admiral Forrestal who reportedly wanted to go public with related information but instead decided to commit suicide? Strange how so many people choose suicide over going down in history as having revealed something important. Oh, I know, they were just kidding, didn't think anyone would take them seriously and when the pressure became too much it was easier to just jump out a window. Sure.

That device is called a breeches buoy. I had one for my G.I. Joe when I was a kid. Used for rescuing people at sea, and for transferring personnel between ships by the Navy before helicopters.

The narrator states that the water temperature is found to be 38°F.
Antarctic surface temperatures can be anywhere from 14°F to -90°F (further inland)..
Every other Antarctic fresh water lake (we know of) is subglacial….
The publicly available data doesn’t provide any means to estimate or compare an “average” Antarctic fresh water lake to those recorded at the “land ‘o lakes.”
At the end of that video they described using radar magnet technology to discover and Mark, “fabulous treasures and resources for all mankind.”

@AJtheory They didn't have very great range. I'm not finding the information that I've read about the rolls motors, I hate it when that happens, although there is a hypothesis circulating that some motors are actually harnessing atmospheric nitrogen using another primer source.

This film, though actual footage, etc. is a mere sketch of what went on during Byrd's mission. Almost insulting, like golf on the lunar surface after a ride on the moon buggy... Truth be told, Admiral Byrd was a great man and the greatest explorer of his time, and a good deal of his knowledge and discoveries
