SVU-AS - Black Ops 2 Weapon Guide

This time, we're covering the SVU-AS.
A shortened version of the Dragunov - the SVU makes its Call of Duty debut in Black Ops 2, but the longer parent design was first seen in COD4.
The Dragunov SVU - or 'Snayperskaya Vintovka Ukorochennaya', translating as 'short sniper rifle' - is a Russian rifle first introduced in 1994.
It is a bullpup reconfiguration of the Dragunov SVD, with its magazine behind the trigger, and a recoil-reducing muzzle brake to combat the heavy recoil from the full-power rifle cartridge the SVU fires: the 7.62-by-54 millimetre Rimmed.
The -AS suffix refers to a later variant of the SVU rifle design: the A stands for automatic, referring to a select-fire ability: and the S refers to the attached bipod.
This specific variant was designed for Special Forces requiring an adaptable weapon, where the select-fire ability transforms a marksman's rifle into a fully-automatic battle rifle when circumstances demand.
Of course, in-game the weapon is essentially a semi-automatic weapon only: select fire is not available. And, while the bipod is present on the weapon: it is non-functional.
Damage-wise, the SVU has the potential to kill in just one-shot, but as far as the sniper rifles are concerned, it is the lowest damage weapon in its tier.
In order to attain a single-shot kill, you will need to strike your opponent directly in the head: in all other cases, you'll need two shots to kill.
When equipped with the suppressor, even a headshot will be insufficient - the suppressed SVU is always a two-shot kill.
The sniper rifles have no range penalty - no matter your distance from your target, you can expect to deal the same amount of damage.
Penetration ability is also high, but unlike the LMGs, the sniper rifle's slower rate of fire and limited magazine capacity mean you generally fare better when you can shoot your target directly.
Rate of fire is the highest within the sniper class, although is by no means impressive: your semi-automatic fire is capped to 415 rounds per minute.
However, this does mean the SVU can fire the two shots often needed to kill in a fairly rapid succession.
Hipfire performance is very poor: not only do the sniper rifles have the highest hip divergence of any weapons, the SVU will also be likely to need two shots to connect.
Leave hipfiring to the direst of emergencies, and look to your sidearm instead for reliable close-quarter performance.
The SVU's handling traits are generally good, at least for the sniper rifle category.
Recoil is the lowest in class, permitting fast follow-up shots out to a middle range: useful, given the low damage of the SVU.
At a longer range, this recoil may throw off your aim - but your weapon's sway and a mobile opponent will prove to be more challenging variables than a mild dose of gun kick.
Aim time is slow, at 420 milliseconds - this means, like the other sniper rifles, you will not perform well in unexpected close-quarter gunfights.
Preparedness is key, then - to ensure advantage you'll want to enter gunfights with your sights already raised, and anticipate the arrival of your enemy.
Movement speed with the sniper rifles is the same as the assault rifles - 95% of the fastest base movement speed.
Magazine capacity is fair, at 12 rounds: the highest within the sniper rifle category.
Of course, the SVU is also the most likely to need these extra shots: you will find the magazine frequently empty.
Thankfully, reloads aren't too bad either: at 2.94 seconds for a tactical reload, you'll be able to restock faster than any other sniper rifle.
Extended clip will take your capacity to 17 rounds, and expand your starting 4-mag supply by the equivalent scale.
So, the SVU is a weapon built for rapid follow-up shots, and as such is probably the best choice in a sniper role for smaller maps with tighter chokepoints.
The ability to quickly dispense rounds means accuracy is less important up-close - and the poor one-shot kill potential means the SVU becomes ineffective at longer ranges.
It's worth noting that the SVU has a lower-than-average zoom level for the sniper category: its base magnification lies between the sniper default and the ACOG zoom level.
The SVU-AS is the lowest damage sniper rifle, but is arguably the most suited to more aggressive play, closer to the enemy.
The low recoil means you can send accurate shots down range very quickly - and the reasonable magazine capacity and swift reload means this tactic is quite sustainable.
It is the slow handling and lower damage that is the SVU's key downfall - the key advantage of most sniper rifles is their ability to instantly snuff opponents.
With a two-shot kill, the SVU is essentially on par with the high damage assault rifles at a middle range - the SMR and FAL deal similar damage, and boast far better handling traits.

No I do the same as this guy! I've gotten a 33 to 1 kill/death ratio on drone with the type 25 no attachments. Some kids should step away from black ops 2!
Your making this response from the experience we now have with the game. This video is From about a month after the game came out. People still were getting used to the game from day 1. And Ahoy really exploits this confusion as well.

Now, don't look too deeply into this, but I always got the feeling that Treyarch *really wants* to make a truly competitive shooter. Their CoD games, Black Ops 2 in particular, have always been just a bit more skill-based than (for instance) the Infinity Ward games, but they've also always had this feeling of being held back by the series' more casual nature (if that makes any sense).
I just get the idea that Treyarch would do very well if they were allowed to make their own, non-CoD game (complete with a full 3-4 year development period).
nope. sorry CoD is just not esport material. personally I do t think the game is skillful and relies on reactions mostly. games like csgo has skill as each weapon has their own recoil pattern and knowing it and being able to compensate is skillful. plus there's always a new cod release where as csgo is just one game that gets updated so comp players for CoD would need to be accustomed to the new release and even then a new release would come. Its your opinion but I'm just giving a logical explanation

TheTrollBox Well I know I'm going to rustle some jimmies by saying this, but I don't think CS:GO is terribly skill-based either, but that's just a case of YMMV. (and in any case there's still more skill to it than CoD).
Anyways, that's not even the point that I was making. BO2, while still too random and reactionary to be truly competitive, is _still_ nonetheless more skill-based than the other CoD games (virtue of the fact that the weapons in BO2 generally do less damage than in previous games and the fact that everything has a counter to it).
The point that I was making was that Treyarch, if given the chance, could potentially make a good competitive shooter. I think it's clear that they _want to_, but for the time being they're limited to making things "competitive" in the context of CoD games.

marmaladesnails Agreed. They've definitely had hiccups as recently as Black Ops 1, but I think they've definitely come out on top in terms of balanced gameplay, at least by CoD standards.

Those were some excellent clips you got, Stu. This might be the only semi-auto sniper out of any CoD that I actually enjoy using regularly. I even designated an entire class slot to it, just so I can mess around with it at all times during any match.

It's worth noting that in any Hardcore game type, the SVU, even suppressed, it almost ALWAYS 1S1K, making it an AMAZING choice for HC modes.

Don't forget about Raging Amish. He may not actually test the weapons himself like Drift0r does, but he tries his best to find the most accurate stats possible before releasing his vids. He also makes a point of telling his viewers if a stat is potentially wrong, because he could only find conflicting info or he couldn't find a reliable source. He also injects humor into his videos with relevant movie and TV clips. Xbox Ahoy, Drift0r and Amish are all guys I watch.

In mw2, they did the same kind of thing with the m14. They made it a sniper for that game, meanwhile it's just a semi auto rifle. Some may say that "It's the m21 ebr! It's different!" But no. It's the m14, with very minimal changes. Not a sniper.
Sumocat The Barrett(at least the one in mw2) isn't a sniper rifle either , since it was originally intended for anti material usage . The m21 in mw2 is not necessarily a sniper rifle either, but it is a designated marksman rifle (DMR) .
Which ( if we talk intended purpose) makes it fit in to the sniper rifle category better than the Barrett.

Personally, I felt that SVU-AS is the best sniper to get kills with but hardest to get gold with because it requires "One Shot One Kill". It's a trade-off imo.

This gun has a unusual quirk. The read metal bits are never turned black or painted over when a camouflage is applied to the weapon.

XboxAhoy, I'm a sniper...well I try to be one (still kidna suck). This video has changed the way I play many maps. I used to think this gun is shit...but now I use it frequently.
That thermal scop + smoke grenade combo is a campers nightmare...I've gotten sooooo many kills when I know there's a camper, by throwing out a smoke grenade, strolling into position, and sniping them threw the smoke.

Great guide. I've been watching since the MW2 guides and I was curious, have you ever considered doing guides for Hardcore mode? I've been playing Hardcore mode almost exclusively for the past several COD games and naturally the balance of weapons, perks, and equipment is quite different. If anyone would know how to take advantage of that, it would be you.
oohhh I see what you're saying. You prefer using different guns in different situations. Well, I agree, that is a better strategy and requires skill. after all, knowing what gun to use when will probably win you more games.
I commented because I have been exclusively using only sniper rifles for the last 3-4 weeks, trying to understand how and when to use...and more importantly when not to use them. They require a rather mean learning curve for unfamiliar users, and XboxAhoy nailed this one.
And Stu I understand your pun about the "dragon-derived rifle" but however the name "Dragunov" is indeed the name of the designer. As always, though, your videos are great.
a hitbox is the invisible area within the character model that is what you actually hit with the "bullets" of a gun. for this gun, sometimes the "bullets" go straight through the chest, stomach, and even head its a glitch with this gun only.

I like my snipers with fast hands + overkill + smg, but you make a good point
This is my CQC combat gun! Feels like a Fal on steroids. Best scope is the stock scope. Silencer also gives less recoil. Laser works great on it. Rusher class: SVU w/ silencer + Laser.

This is my first sniper of this game. Weakest of the snipers (where a headshot is usually the most effective), the gun is very good for new players to snipers...
I often use this with the FN FAL (for my secondary).

It's almost a placebo effect. It says that it increases damage in the stats, but only through wall penetration. You are most likely hitting the 1 shot zones more often, attributed to practice.
