I've been watching reviews all day. This is gotta be the first review that actually gave me real information about the difference between a premium camera and a budget one (that is not so budget)
THANK YOU! I’ve been shooting over 50 years so I’ve sort figured it out. You’re so kind to notice. Thanks!
Lots of people have been really negative about this camera. So far I really like it. Big upgrade from the 40D I have.
Who are these people? Full time pro shooters, or just CZcamsrs? See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm
If you don’t know what you’re doing it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have, well said sir!
Agreed!!!
Great review! I simply love your authentic style, I hope you will produce many more of these. Thank you for great, no-nonsense content, both here and on your legendary website!
Thanks! Glad you noticed; I put a lot of effort into sticking to the point and removing fluff.
The best review of any camera I’ve ever seen.
Thanks Andy!!!!!!!
i just ordered this camera body only with the 50mm 1.8, hoya uv protector and sandisk 128 extreme for 994.56 $ including tax and shipping. reason for not going with the 90d, didn't want top lcd, didn't feel as good in my small hand, and wanted to stay under 1000 dollars total. I will have to suffer with 7 fps rather than 10 and the lesser capabilities at my grand kids skateboard contests, too bad! thanks Ken.
Thanks!
I own a Canon SL3 (250D), and I am very happy with it. Even though it is a "beginner camera", I think it takes great pictures! I bought really good lenses. I have a 70-200mm 2.8 III L, 50mm 1.8, and a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8. I picked Canon for their colors, lenses, menus, and Tech Support!
Perfect! Thanks!
Thank you so much for your video. I have watched a ton of videos trying to make up my mind-still thinking about which one BUT your voice and the way you explain everything is so easy to listen to.
Thank you! See the full review and some comparisons at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t8i.htm a big question today is is you prefer Mirrorless like the newer R10 www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r10.htm
I’m trying to decide between the t8i and the 90d . The pics will be of my 3 grandsons 10 to 8 months and the outdoors. First camera was ae 35 mm in 78 took tons advanced then stopped in the early 90s. Never went any further so I have to learn all over again and retired so money is fixed. I’m a get what you pay for person and like the feel of something substantial does the t8i feel cheep or plasticIE (yep I said that word). I’m basically concerned about sharp pics so what do I do ???? Help! Good camera and a good lens ??????
@@tammystover1205 Hi Tammy, iPhone 14 Pro Max does an awesome job, and it's all stainless steel, sapphire lens covers and hardened glass. For the full scoop on the 90D and T8i, see my full written reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t8i.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm which mentions "As the most expensive Canon Rebel, the T8i has excellent autofocus performance, the best controls and a rear control dial. Moving up to a 90D gets you even more controls, displays, speed and resolution - but still the same pictures most of the time." Getting sharp pictures depends mostly on your ability to get correct focus on wiggly kids, and having enough light to be able to catch them in motion. It's tough; for kids often an iPhone is faster to shoot for grab shots! It's not 1978 anymore; all these cameras are a lot of plastic. Is this helping? Feel free to email me from the CONTACT links at KenRockwell.com if you like; I don't always see replies to replies here. Thanks for asking!
First time ive come across your youtube channel. Ive been following your site since 2015. One great thing about your assessments, is your way of implying if you know how to work a camera, none are bad. Which is true, because if you cant, even a 6D or 7D will take shoddy pics.
Yes! An artist can use even a broken camera and make great pictures. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Like I said. ha ha
This is the second time someone said that the 850d takes better photos than some $5000 camera, if I were the owner of that $5000 camera and heard this, I would throw the cam
...the box that the camera came in, at the wall. Think I'll pick this one up, it looks very promising and good.
Every camera from each brand pretty much looks the same as every other one from the same brand at any point in time. The differences are that each brand has a look (Canon and nikon lead here) and your preferences will vary. Thanks!
Thank you for your reviews I already bought the camera but wanted to know your take on it. You made me feel good about my purchase. I also checked out your website and the way the info was on there was great as well. The part about the lens correction helped me be more comfortable on eBay buying older canon lenses
THanks!!!
Love watching your genuine reviews ... Pretty straight and informative. Would definitely subscribe and keep an eye on your upcoming videos , thanks man
Thanks Rajiv!
Great review, Ken. It seems a good little camera
It’s a great little camera. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Ken will you be trying out the new tokina atx-i 11-20mm?
happy to see some one giving a good review other than people just complaining about video features rather than camera fetures.
I don’t bother with these for video; my iPhone works much better for reasons of simple physics. thanks!
Thanks for your time and effort Ken.
Thank you!!
Great review thanks, very reassuring. I actually had to return a 90D, just not getting sharp, well defined images expected. Like you, been doing this a long time, very disappointed. Wanted apsc to get added reach on L series 300 + 1.4 Canon extender pics. Now can't wait to get out there when 850 delivered. Cheers from the UK
Weird that happened and thanks!
Hi, I set the selection dial to A (AUTO) but then in the size of the photos taken I can't set the size
16: 9. can you tell me how to take photos at 16: 9 because in the settings menu the possibility to choose the format does not appear but only the quality. Thanks
As always, this answer and so much more are up at my website at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t8i.htm#crops CZcams is just for fun; see my website for much more in-depth reviews of everything made in about the past 40 years. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV OK ok thanks I sent you an email to show you that I don't have the option to choose 16: 9 on the display
I broke my collarbone in multiple places and looking to use this for shooting mountain bikes while im unable to ride, soif i was to get one would i be able to get the action shots i would want with this.
Also sick video really useful
Thanks! Hope you get back riding fast!
Great review, just wondering your thoughts on this You vs the SL3. I'm trying to decide between the two. Thanks for any input you have.
Read each review in detail at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/index.htm#dslr SL3 is for tiny size; t8i is bigger and has more features.
Hello Ken,
Just chanced upon your video..
I bought my first camera 9 years ago(EOS 1100D) and it has come time to upgrade.
Would this camera be a decent long term investment should I decide to scale up? Or should I get an 80D? (I wont consider anything higher than 2-digit models).
I do not get paid for shooting. I do it casually as an interest.
Is it worth paying the extra for the 80D/90D or would the 850D/800D be more than enough (I am hoping it can last me at least as long as my 1100D).
Currently torn between both and have been watching your videos (still undecided).
I do not take pictures often. But when I do, it is about 70% landscapes and 30% portraits/others.
My current loadout is as follows:
Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4/7
Canon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Sigma 70-300 (I forgot the aperture. But I seldom use this anyway)
What would your advise be?
Would the 850D be "functional" enough that it will not need scaling up based on my use-case, or would a 80D/90D be a safer choice.
My current 1100D is "good" but I feel it hitting its limits at the present time.
Sorry for the long message and I hope to hear a reply from you soon.
Regards,
Matt
See kenrockwell.com/tech/upgrades.htm. Any camera takes the same pictures; difference is how easy it makes it. See also kenrockwell.com/tech/is-it-worth-it.htm
Well, I did it! Based on your website review of this camera, I moved up from my iPhone and bought one: my first DSLR! I mainly want to use it to photograph my artwork. On your site, you recommended the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Would that apply for photographing artwork or is there another lens you would recommend for photographing artwork? Thank you!
Hi Donna! The 18-135 is great for everything. The 50/2.8 macro might be better in a laboratory if you were going to reproduce art all day (www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-macro.htm) which goes for about $175 used www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Canon%2050mm%20(Macro,f/2.5,f2.5,2.5)%20-(Sigma,Tamron,Tokina,for,fisheye,quantaray,FD,FL,MC,Zeiss)&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5336071501&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1 but it stick with the 18-135 and not worry. If you can, the best and easiest light is to go outside and shoot the work in direct sunlight. Does this help? Thanks!
This is the newest and very best 18-135: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/18-135mm-usm.htm
Great Review! Thank you very much!
Thank YOU!
Any Pentax review soon from Ken? Canon DSLRS from around 2007 until the last ones changed so litle. This camera reminds me of my old 60d. Both in menus and design.
Not likely; no time. Pentax hasn’t kept up and DSLRs have been obsolete since 2018. Is Pentax Mirrorless yet? Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Why would they switch? Mirror is more fun anyways. ;)
I love how light my Rebel is
Yes! Thanks!
Great video, very helpful.
Thank you!!
I mainly shoot video and am upgrading from an SL2. Trying to decide between the T8i and 90D. I vlog a fair amount so I value the light weight of the T8i, but the specs on the 90D are tempting as well.
I prefer and use iPhone exclusively (that’s what my entire channel uses) so I can’t comment here. I do know most cameras are capable of much much more than people ever do with them. Thanks!
If you don't care about 4k.then t8i is good enough for you, use the extra money to buy an awesome instead
Woah Ken Rockwell is on yt?!?
Yes! Thanks!
Where you get your 50mm F/1.8 lens ?!
B&H of course www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1143786-REG/canon_0570c002_ef_50mm_f_1_8_stm.html/BI/287/KBID/1037 $125 and one of Canon’s sharpest lenses ever. Full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f18-stm.htm thanks!
Great review, Ken! As always. One question: Does the T8i built-in flash have the ability to trigger off camera flash? I really don't want to spend a lot more on the 90d just to get that feature. Also, does the SL2 built-in flash trigger off camera flash? I have the SL2. Thanks!
All in camera flash can work as a master for simple manual optical triggers, as I use it. I can’t remember if the t8i works as a controller for remote exposure control, ask Canon tomorrow at (800) OK-Canon and they’ll know. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks, I'll call Canon tomorrow. I compared the Menu settings in my 80d and SL2. The SL2 does not have the wireless flash function that enables the built-in SL2 flash to trigger an off camera external flash. The 80d does have this function. Thanks for your help, Ken!
@@KenRockwellTV Talked to Canon today. None of the Rebel line cameras have the ability to fire an external off-camera flash using the built-in flash. Canon's XXd models' built-in flash do have that capability. I still have an 80d which I was thinking of selling but will hang on to it now. That ability to trigger off camera flash with the camera's pop up flash is really a nice feature to have. Thanks so much for your help, Ken!
@@sl2608 Thanks for the update! I'll admit I'm less familiar with this because I go all the way to manual studio strobes if using more then one flash, and they trigger simply from one manual pop of the built-in.
@@KenRockwellTV You're most welcome. I use the 80d built-in flash to trigger my off-camera Canon 430 EXII speedlite. Works great! I thought the pop-up flash on the Rebel cameras might be able to do this also. Well, too bad they can't, but I learned something!
You sir, are clairvoyant at review videos! You also sound like Alan Alda so thats even better lol
I’ve heard that. Funny thing is it never damned on me. Thanks!
The 77D is available at a few places for $799 with the 18-135 kit lens. It is very tempting. Any compelling reasons to get the T8i over the 77D for photography? My use is family / travel photography. I like the live view functions of both cameras and couldn't care less about 4K video. I expect to use the 10-18mm zoom/ 24mm / and 35mm macro 95% of the time. Thanks
77D is a better camera, older so more deeply discounted.
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks.
@@KenRockwellTV Ken - I've been reading your reviews for YEARS and value your expertise. You state here the 77D is a better camera than the T8i. I'm interested in these two cameras mainly to shoot general purpose AND sports, indoors and outdoors. Two questions:
- Does the T8i have anti-flicker? I read your review of it twice but didn't see it mentioned.
- Since the 77D shoots at 6 fps and the T8i at 7.5 fps, wouldn't I be better off buying the T8i? Or are you saying the 77D is better in ways other than fps, so I really would be better off with the 77D?
By the way, once my decision is made, I WILL be buying the camera via YOUR review pages.
I am a journalism student and I want to buy a camera with which I can take good pictures and record quality videos, I have Shortlisted these 3 camera
Canon - 200d- mark2, 77d and 850d
Which one should I go for?
Also you if can recommend me if there is any other camera that I should go for!
They’re all good. As only experience will tell you after a few decades, knowing your camera well is far more important that what camer. 77D is older and more discounted and a more competent camera than the lighter 850D, so depends on what you want to cArry. Honestly I shoot most of my reportage with my iPhone.
How is this camera compared to the nikon z50?
Completely different types: Mirrorless vs dslr. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV How would you compare it to the d7500? I currently use the d7500 but I've been thinking of switching to either Canon or Sony, so any comments/thoughts/recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated!
Amazing video
Thanks!
So is a rebel t8i and 850d the exact same camera?
Same camera. It's called the Canon Rebel T8i in the USA, the Kiss X10i in Japan and EOS 850D everywhere else. Cann does this to try to thwart people cross-shipping between countries to take advantage of exchange rates for gray market products www.kenrockwell.com/tech/gray-market.htm
@@KenRockwellTV Thank you so much! I appreciate you!
Hi Ken really appreciate this review at this time its great you reviewed this and the 90d the 2 cameras im really on the fence about!
But Im still uncertain whether to go for it or stretch an extra £360 in the uk for the 90D - my old trusty canon 700d has never produced ultra sharp quality images but its a reasonable camera decent enough for portrait and headshot work.
The 90D main benefits I think are headphone jack and no cropped 4k - but the extra camera weight and that high density of pixels kind of puts me off and my feeling is that the 850D will take just as good photos for my headshot and portrait work as a 90D I will wager I would not be able tell the difference anyway and can spend the extra cash saved on some new lens maybe.
If you can’t get stunning images with what you have, a new camera won’t help. You’ve got to figure out how to get great results with your current camera first. Hint: I set saturation and sharpening all the way up on picture styles. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV thanks Ken I agree and believe im getting the best I can out of the 700D! On top of some welcome new features such as wifi andn 4k video I guess my expectation is that newer cameras capture more sharpness and dynamic range which would be most welcome in my work!
@His Masters Voice @Ken Rockwell thanks again guys great feedback. I do indeed have the 18-55 STM but also own the 40mm pancake, the 85mm 1.8, the 50mm 1.8 and the 75-300mm. All in the budget range but good enough for the mainly portrait and headshot work Ive been doing, ive had no complaints from clients. However in comparing to competitors everyone else seems to look super cleean and sharp so my thinking is that newer models have less noise and capture more clarity with better dynamic range - If you are saying thats not the case perhaps I will carry on longer with what I have!
@His Masters Voice awesome! really appreciate your feedback and thoughts super helpful - desirable camera features aside, the lens choice is the clincher!
Good video.
Greet comment! Thank you!!!
Canon 850d/90 which better ??
Same camera, different markets . D90 for sale in USA, 850D rest of world outside Japan. Makers do this to try to lining gray market cross shippjng www.kenrockwell.com/tech/gray-market.htm
Does its M mode allow for auto ISO?
It should; auto iso should still work to maintain correct exposure at your chosen manual settings. I didn’t try it on the 5’T8i, but that’s how it works in other models. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV you're right but the reason why I asked is that my old Sony sdlr/slt and NEXs do not allow for auto ISO in M mode which is limiting for example in shooting street photography.
Inflation is no joke, it's 900.00 plus new everywhere now.
Inflation and yen to dollar exchange rate. Thanks!
Nice honest review of the 850D.
I am currently the user of the previous Canon 760D and the earlier 550D
But i am kinda torn between the new Canon mirrorless EOS R6/R5 full frame camera. But the two units price are kinda eye watering for Singapore prices. The R5 is currently on pre-order for almost $8000 SGD with the 24-105mm kit lens. Thats not including the battery grip and the conversion mount to adapt EF lenses to the body.
I suspect the R6 which will be released later for my region is 5 to 6k SGD but it still too much for me.
What I like about my 760D is that it has the top LCD screen which allows me to quick glance my current shooting settings. But now because I also do some video recording, the 1080P at only 24 or 30 fps looks pretty bad esp when you do playback on a 4K TV.
But If i wished to retain my battery grip and the extra batteries, that means giving up the top LCD screen to use the 850D.
I could also go mid range and pick the 90D which will have the same look and feel like my current 760D but i will need to re-buy the battery grip and batteries packs.
So I am stuck in a 3 way crossroads.
Basically I need an upgrade camera that can deliver good stills and up to 4K 60 fps video recording.
Would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks
Regards
Chester Lin
I love my RP and shoot all my video at 23.976, the Hollywood film standard last 50 years. . I want my work to look like it is a Hollywood motion picture, which is 23.976. Fast rates like 59.94 look much cheaper, like amateur video. therefore I LOVE my EOS RP! 60 looks more fluid and smooth motion, 24 looks more like a movie and we shoot at 24 deliberately because that motion blur adds to the minds suspension of disbelief and lets us tell a story better. In Hollywood there are services (filmlook.com) that convert 60fps video back to 24 so it looks more professionall. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV The reason for the faster frame rate is because i am recording dance videos for my friends. Thus i need the 60 fps to capture all their movements. So will the 90D be a good unit? Or get the R5/6 because of the better video and In Body Image Stabilization?
I called canon I was told t8i have c1 options
Thanks!
Thank you I believe you over canon you say there is c1 option canon representative told me there is I will take your word over there’s made subscriber out of me
I had better autofocus on my 1995 SVHS camera.
For video, quite likely. Thanks!
Anything not made of plastic?
Screws lens mount Tripod socket etc
Good review. But, no point buying this one when you can catch a canon rp on sale.
Yes! I LOVE MY RP! T8i still better for action. Thanks!
I have RP and I'm consider getting the t8i as my second camera. They both use the same battery.
Oh, the hot shoe is metal
yes..stamped from beer can.
So man up and get the 1DX mk III. Thanks!
Only kidding Ken
Actually it was in your many reviews where you note that cameras and lenses are becoming made from less metal and more plastic crap that I have become more aware
Your the legend!
@@KenRockwellTV hang on Ken...you regularly call these cameras plastic turds on your website..just saying.
