imagine your job is to look through hundreds of unclaimed luggage suitcases for items to sell, you open up the suitcase expecting to see the usual piles of clothes, you look down to see the face of a rotting decaying animatronic puppet, latex looking like moldy cheese falling off of his face
Not gonna lie, it really looks like something out of Five Nights at Freddy's.

Yikes, that Hoggle restoration is...well...they tried their hardest I guess
I'd personally like to know just how much that restoration cost...
They took Hoggle to a local guy who usually restores dolls, instead of looking for someone who had expertise in movie props or animatronics. The guy in question should have realized he was way out of his depth to be working on this expertly crafted million dollar puppet, but he took the job anyway. Hopefully someday, Hoggle will be double-restored by people who know what they are doing.
i suppose I'll take him in this condition over what he was in before. You can tell it was at least done with love.
@@usagijojo Man I wish they would return him to the Creature Shop?! Like, why the heck didn't they do that in the first place? I can't imagine the Creature Shop didn't want him back??
@@BabyCharmander I imagine the Creature Shop would have contacted them if they wanted it back. Could also be that this was discovered back when they were in financial troubles and didn't want to spend the money on getting it back.
Edit: looked in further, it looks like this particular Hoggle was actually in private ownership and changed hands a few times before it was lost. So the Creature Shop had sold written it off long ago.
No not Hoggle!!! His puppet was so wonderful. It's a nice gesture for them to have tried restored it though.
If I'm being honest, I was already ready to just throw Hoggle in the garbage with the rest of my childhood nightmares. Now he's absolutely in the trauma trash
I visited Unclaimed Baggage just to see him. The display is nice, and the work done looks far better in person.
The thing that makes me sad is the potential for the Jim Henson creature shop to restore him fully and more accurately idk I give way to many fucks about fucking puppets
On the bright side most of the other puppets are in a museum in I think New York in good condition because of their constant restoration

Why did Jim Henson Studios make no attempt to recover Hoggle? He deserves his own spot in Henson's Center for Puppetry Arts here in Atlanta

Well like Mark said, they most likely wrote it off as an insurance claim, so if they were to take the animatronic back they might’ve had to pay back the insurance company, especially adjusted for inflation it would’ve been a lot of money.

That's what I was thinking. Seriously, Brian Henson is still alive and he was one of the main designers on Hoggle and he was even Hoggle's voice. I think he could have done a much better job.

I saw a really cheap 1968 Science fiction movie called " Journey to the Center of time". The set they redressed obviously was the bridge of the Enterprise from original Star Trek. Even the turbo lift doors were there. along with the view screen.All the walls were remodeled .but still you can tell it was once the bridge.
@@johnbockelie3899, Journey to the Center of Time was a 1967 film, and the last day of filming for the original Star Trek was January 9, 1969, so that wasn't the redressed bridge set. It was still in use. The production designer simply ripped off the Star Trek bridge design. I've seen that movie, and it's baaaaaaad! Gotta love the little elevator that lifts the actors about 24 inches, though! (I got the impression that the production designer must have been about thirteen years old.)
@@racookster I'm glad you told me this. When I saw that interior of that time machine, I thought the bridge from Star Trek was bought by some cheap movie company and cheaply redesigned. Even the turbo lift door was in the same place along with the view screen. And the walkway around the set was the same. 1967 was a year before Star Trek was cancelled. Maybe the set designer had some stolen blue prints. The movie was MST 3000 material.( I mean 1969 for S T. cancellation. )😢
@@johnbockelie3899: It doesn't even look like the designer used Star Trek's blueprints. It's just a vaguely octagonal (well, polygonal) room with a sunken center and a rail around that. It's not even a similar kind of rail. The walls are all flat. There are no control panels per se. (Star Trek's control panels are complicated pieces of carpentry.) They just haphazardly stuck switches and lights in sheets of orange-painted plywood. It really does look like a teenager's attempt at building something like the Star Trek bridge on a tight budget. I can see why you're relieved to know they didn't defile the Enterprise bridge to build... that.
@@racookster Besides that, there was some stupid atom shaped thing where Kirk's chair was supposed to be. Looks like a middle schools attempt to do a Star Trek play. I was 7 years old when this movie came out. " Journey to the Center of time."
Oh God, could you imagine if the person who found the Hoggle suitcase had poor eyesight? And when they opened the case, they thought they discovered the rotting corpse of a child or something (probably would've smelled the same too)? Absolutely terrifying.
Latex doesn't smell like flesh. You know the smell of parmesan cheese? It's similar to that since they both flesh and parmesan have the same chemical that makes it smell the way it does.

It fascinates me how often iconic movies considered to be stunning masterpieces were box office flops, just shows that there’s always hope for a movie that didn’t do well financially.
Everyone seems to dislike labyrinth/hoggle, but honestly that movie was part of my childhood and I loved it, lol
it was a little traumatizing ngl
I saw it once as a kid, forgot about it for many years because it wasn't my thing, but I watched it again more recently. I now feel a connection as an adult that I never would have known back then, so only NOW do I consider this film a "must see, must have" in my physical media collection. It really is a masterpiece for one reason or another in my opinion. It's a kind of film you could watch in the Fall, around Halloween, during the summer, or maybe even early Spring (if it's still winter in your part of the world, unlike California where I live) and the basic principles of "being lost and trying to find your way back to the path you know you should be on right now" and "seeing what you want/need right there, but you can't quite reach it" spoke to me. All in all, seeing Hoggle being abandoned like that put a damper on my mood, but I can appreciate the sentiment behind the folks who did their best to restore and repurpose him rather than toss him or something.
I hates it when I was little because my sister was obsessed with David Bowie and wouldn't stop talking about it. Once we grew up and she stopped pushing it in my face, I was able to appreciate it.
Nat Your Average Nerd yeah, there’s a lot of movies that I’d much rather own a physical copy of them digital (like the lion king,, have that on VHS, and , obviously, labyrinth.) There’s a sort of appeal to having the disks/tapes of my favorite movies rather than streaming them. And yes, the theme of the movie, though hard to see at first, Is definitely a good one
You're using "everyone" way too loosely. That movie is known for having a huge fan base. The Dark Crystal was far more terrifying.
Plot twist: Nessie is really just Stitch swimming in the water holding a stick as a disguise. He is a time traveler after all, he's invaded several movies

@@kurtwagner4663 Yeah, water is basically his kryptonite. Sometimes it's explained as his density is too high and can't swim (like you said) and other times it's described that extended time in water will actually break down his molecular structure. Generally though, i think it's usually just referenced that Stitch doesn't like it and can't swim.

Russell Brown that’s kinda the same situation with the real Titanic, any real attempt to surface it and restore it would be 1. Unethical and extremely disrespectful to the people who perished on the ship and 2. Due to it being rested on the seabed for 108 years it would be physically impossible to release it from the bottom of the sea as it’s formed into the ground and it’s about 2 miles deep, while I do think as many things that have survived should be saved and brought back to land for preservation I do think the ship itself should be left to rest in peace (unfortunately a type of bacteria has been slowly taking over the ship for decades and it’s been suggest that within the next 30 to 50 years there will be nothing left of the vessel)
Seeing Hoggle in that state genuinely makes me really sad.

Reminder that eDNA tests recently pointed that Nessie is real and most likely a VERY large eel living in the loch. Which is pretty neat. (we thought it was a catfish for a long time which also would have been neat because those things get pretty damn big)
Sounds a little similar to Steve Alten's "The Loch". In the book Nessie is, in fact, a giant anguilla eel, the last of a species that once migrated to Loch Ness to breed. It's good read, if a little on the fantastical side at times.

Thing is, eel spines don't arch the way the famous Nessie photo does- they're made for flexibility left and right, not for raising their heads like a snake does. If there is a giant eel in Loch Ness, it has little to nothing to do with the sea monster people suspect of living in there.
@@frenchbreadstupidity7054 The photo is fake. There's nothing living in the loch that has DNA close to anything that would look like the picture. It's most likely a deliberate hoax, but there's a chance it's just a piece of driftwood.
If there really was something like a plesiosaur swimming around the lake, it would have left DNA in the water from waste. Nothing like that has been recorded in water samples taken from all over the loch; lots of eel DNA though. However, even then the "giant" eel in question probably wouldn't be that big or impressive anyway.
However, money talks. It's no secret that tourism to that part of Scotland brings in lots of cash to the local economy thanks to Nessie. So it should come as no surprise that neither Scotland nor the towns around the loch are in any hurry to validate any evidence that debunks the monster.
Thanks Yesterworld. I just couldn't go to sleep without seeing a character from one of my favorite movies rotting away in a suit case. Besides scarring me for a week, it was actually really interesting to see what happened to what happened to hoggle after the movie. I never thought about it before, so thank you!

I like how the raise the titanic movie was filmed before the real titanic was found. The movie shows the ship in one piece with the glass dome intact and with furniture still in rooms.
Ship split halfway, the stern dove straight, and all the water rushing in caused the stern to partially explode including the aft grand staircase
At the time the novel _Raise the Titanic!_ (on which the film of the same name was based) was written, there was a commonly held belief that the extreme depth and cold of the water would have preserved the wreck and its contents relatively intact, because it was assumed that nothing could live down there (and that the water would be too oxygen-poor to support rust). How could someone who purports themselves to be "the most die-hard fan" of the original Planet of the Apes film even think that creepy, hideous movie prop came anywhere near the original? Haven't seen the movie in over a decade but I still remember the statue being buried up to her midsection and holding the torch. Also she didn't look deformed and eerily depressed. I understand the guy probably saw it on eBay for a super cheap price and went "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!" but he continued to think it was the same head years later and tried to sell it to someone else as from the original film? Half idiot, half schyster I suppose.

I know some other movie props that where abandoned:
In the Netherlands, there is this dutch childrens book author "Paul van Loon". He basically makes horror books for kids, with "Dolfje Weerwolfje" and "De Griezelbus" being his most popular franchises at the time. Anyhow, we will talk about the film based on De Griezelbus (translating to "The creepy bus"). The story of the film is about Onnoval as a kid (he is a messed up adult vampire in the books, but with flashbacks to his childhood, where he for example accidentally murdered his best friend, yea pretty heavy stuff). He is in school, and he is getting bullied yadieyada. Anyway, just like in the books, Onnoval has the power to make everything that he writes come true, so, angrily, he writes about the school going on a trip to a horror Theme Park, where his bully would het killed.
The theme park segments where filled at Familiepark Drievliet in the Netherlands, that park actually recieved most of the films props after shooting, the bus itself for example, can still be seen next to the parks ghost train. However, there where some other props shown off next to the bus here, but those have rotted away due to not being repaired or taken care off. Some other props where put in the ghost train, but those got removed when the ride got rethemed, and I have no idea what happened to em.
Wait that was the actual bus from the movie?!?!? And do you maybe know what the props where in the ghost train before the retheme?
@@Raafi17 I don't know all the props for sure, but the popup vampire, that was a small jumpscare in the film, has been spotted on some onrides

They went through a lot of trouble trying to verify the Statue of Liberty head. I was able to spot it immediately and already knew they never built a full head for the movie. That was great! Hope you do more!
As Lord Grade put it when 'Raise the Titanic' flopped: "It would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic".
I actually go to Unclaimed Baggage a few times a year, as I live about an hour away from it. Always did enjoy seeing the Hoggle puppet, even if I didn’t know where or what it was from until I was about 14.
Labyrinth has always been one of my all-time favorite Jim Henson movies and it is really a shame of what happened to Hoggle. I have seen the horrifying images of the decaying puppet online in the past but never knew the story behind it. I just assumed he was put in a storage unit to be forgotten about but to hear he had been put in a suitcase and was lost for a decade was truly sad. I am glad he was finally discovered again, but I can't imagine the nightmares the poor employee had after that finding him. It is good though they were able to restore the puppet for fans to enjoy!

That's what I heard. He made a special agreement with the directors of the film that all of his costumes would accentuate his... area. dunno why that was so important to him but it certainly made the movie more memorable
It was just a cod piece placed in the costume. Standard costume prop used in many super hero movies.

After looking at codpieces, I found this snippet on an article titled:The Dick Debate, Labyrinth Edition, referring to a codpiece being worn by Bowie: "That’s ridiculous and I think we can all agree that’s not what Bowie is dealing with. The costume designers purposely made his pants REALLY tight because he was supposed to be alluring and desirable like a rock star but maybe something was there to smooth things out a bit; the penile equivalent of nipple covers, but that’s it. Nah man, Labyrinth wasn't the scary Jim Henson movie. That would have to be The Dark Crystal. I love watching it but also I never watch it by myself so... 😅
The Dark Crystal was both super fascinating and totally impossible to understand for me -- at least until I got to the ending. Then, it all made sense. I don't want to give it away in case someone reading this has not seen it, but think of the "rule of two" from Star Wars. The way this film uses that idea is quite brilliant, I think, and I had to step back and think about it after the movie was over because I wasn't sure at first if I got it. Think on it. That's my piece.

The one that makes me saddest is hoggle
I remember when Hoggle was on display before they restored him. as a kid I wouldnt walk through the room they kept him in without hiding my eyes. Now I hide my eyes because it hurts to see what they did to him.
Love these episodes! Hopefully with things like Disney+'s new Prop show, the movie prop community will grow and more fans will attempt to restore and protect valuable film-used artifacts.

Labyrinth got bad reviews but it certainly earned a cult following. In my opinion, it's a great movie especially that talking worm

i was like 9 or 10 when i saw labyrinth (and it's still one of my fav movies) for the first time and safe to say that young me was scarred when i searched google for the hoggle puppet

I’ve actually seen Hoggle in person at the store, it was actually on a trip to my grandparents and I had no idea what the movie was, it was pretty weird seeing the thing act like a real living thing, and then remembering seeing it behind a wall of

Dude, how absolutely terrifying would it be to dive down to the Nessie prop. I have no idea what depth it's at or if it'd even be possible, but I've done quite a bit of diving in my life and diving down to that thing in murky freshwater, guarantee I would crap my wetsuit.

i cannot believe labyrinth did so poorly at the box office. it was a fantastic movie. i remember when it first came out. i mustve watched it over and over and over. of course i was just a kid and its kinda what kids used to do. but even today its still one of my all time favorite movies.
I actually saw Hoggle when I went there 5 years ago! I remember being so intrigued by seeing him there since I was so interested in the movie at the time and I took pictures of him as well as the info next to him.

Sweet that someone painstakingly restoring the ruined Labyrinth puppet after decades😮 And I watched the Loch Ness drama few years back... that was surprisingly noice❣
The reason nobody would try to recover the Loch Ness movie prop from the bottom of the lake is because the lake is very deep (and murky and cold). It would cost so much money to retrieve the cheap and only so-so famous prop that it's not worth it.

I''m so glad they found the loch ness movie monster, I remember reading about that as a kid. The image was pretty striking and the idea that it had sunk was still there made it even more cool and creepy.
