    one bit of Last Crusade production history not mentioned here, (though that might be because, iirc, it was only in earlier scripts) the Grail Knight was originally supposed to appear on horseback and attacks Indy that way, leading to a short fight before the scene progresses as normal, and then at the end of the movie he rides out of the temple and both he and his horse turn to dust as their centuries finally catch up to them

      Yeah, while absolutely fascinating, I tried to focus on stuff that was actually filmed...there's even a scene in which Indy is following the tank, and they shoot a nearby cliff which crumbles, and Indy has to change his course...but other than the effect and a location photo, there's no evidence the rest of it was filmed...honestly so much was cut from TLC that it could've been an entire episode

      @@Digitalhunny an easy solution to that would be to make it a spiritual adaptation instead ;) like a "different" quest for the Holy Grail by definitely-not-Indiana-Jones-original-character-donut-steel which does alot of this
      my headcanon is actually that the Grail Knight from the film is the second one and the first one was Percival from the Arthur Cycle who rode out of the temple and turned to dust after finding his worthy successor in the current Grail Knight

    Oooo, I can actually answer this one! Nearly all German U-boats were really more submersibles rather than proper submarines. This means that they would really just go under the surface of the water, leaving the snorkel above water, and sometimes even the top of the conning tower. However, they were not very quick while under the surface of the water, so they generally did not submerge unless they absolutely had to. So, as long as Indy could find a way to keep out of sight of anybody on the deck, he'd be fine. It's more fun to think of him hanging on to the top of the snorkel, though.

    • @brocktechnology
      @brocktechnology Před 3 lety +10

      The snorkel wasn't introduced until '46, which only further supports your point. U-boats of the period really only submerged for attack or evasion. Indie's real problem was that the coning tower would have been crewed for the whole trip unless the weather was pretty bad.

    The cuts they made to Last Crusade were wise ones. Both Indy after the tank and the crusader randomly appearing at the end lend more emotional gravitas to the scenes. Plus, the crusader appearing randomly at the end almost gives him a mystical, Arthurian, Lady of the Lake, ghostlike quality. It makes you question whether or not he's an apparition. Plus, that's the only moment of relevance for him and it is poetic with his salute. The editing was masterful.

    The most likely location of the lost footage from both franchises is in the Lucasfilm archives. Specifically, in the feature film vaults. In the case of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, it’s been confirmed that George Lucas kept all the pieces of them. Even the stuff that wasn’t used.

      Lucas was meticulous about archiving and preserving things...unless they got stolen like Han's original blaster prop and stuff like that.
      Spielberg is staunchly against alternative cuts and deleted scene reveals for his movies (particularly after the reception he had doing that to Close Encounters and ET) so that probably is a major factor as to why Indiana Jones has basically nothing publicly released compared to star wars.

    For the Wampa walking with a passed out Luke, instead of trying to make a very tall Wampa dragging a life sized dummy of Luke, all they had to do was take a tall man, not on stilts dragging an undersized dummy of Luke. This way they wouldn't have had all those problems. The scene was in the snow, there were no other reference points that would have given the trick away and it would have saved them a lot of trouble. Of course this in in hindsight now, I'm just surprised they didn't think of it.

    Officially one of my favorite videos on CZcams.
    I've always been fasinated by deleted scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy and Indiana Jones trilogy. There were a few scenes from each that i've read about that you didn't mention though, such as a monologue that Obi Wan gave regarding Luke's mother. Before prequel continuity was established of course. Supposedly the monologue ran almost 16 minutes and whether or not that was to be intercut with dialogue from Luke I'm not sure. Tbh I can't even remember where I first heard about this scene but I know I did.
    A small scene I read about from Last Crusade was the Nazis blowing open the grail temple with a tank which is how they were able to enter it in the first place. I suppose that would've happened right after the Indy death fake out and reunion.
    Then of course there's stuff from Raiders like more suggestive scenes of Indy sleeping with his students and a deleted kiss between him and Marion in the bar in Nepal.
    And the coolest deleted scenes from the Indy trilogy imo is that Abner Ravenwood was supposed to be the Indiana Jones lookalike in the beginning of Crusade. Fuck I wish they left that in.
    Again man. Love this video, deleted scenes are one of my favorite aspects of old movies. Keep up the great work.

      Thank you for the kind words! I tried to focus on scenes that were actually shot/filmed, as opposed to those in earlier scripts...that could quite literally be a whole other episode :) And the whole "Nazi's blowing up the grail temple" is part of the footage I showcased, so I didn't feel the need to go into it...although granted, it's a pretty brief shot.

      @@YesterworldEntertainment Ah I understand and yeah that would make a cool video. There's so much to cover especially with Return of the Jedi when it comes to deleted concepts. Such as reanimated, I guess you could say "zombie" Obi Wan returning to help Luke. That was originally supposed to be a literal interpretation of "I shall become more possible than you can possibly image." Honestly glad they stayed away from it. Then there's of course the 6 hour cut of Phantom Menace, my god what a crazy thing to exist lmao.
      Also where did you get all of this footage? I myself enjoy collecting deleted footage from all my favorite movies whether its full scenes, little snippets, or still shots.

    The Marvel comics adaptation of Empire used several of the deleted scene pictures like the Bacta face bandage and inferring the Wampa attack on Hoth base.
    It might be interesting to get ahold of those issues and look for shots taken from other deleted scenes. The artist essentially traced the majority of his artwork from movie stills as they wanted the comic to look as much like the movie panel for panel as possible.
    I loved that as a kid as there wasn't even VHS as a widespread format that everyone had available. So those issues and the odd kids book and magazine with loads of pictures carefully chosen to ensure the Mood and Feel of the film carried over into them extending the life of Immersion for fans.

    The original Wedge/Luke scene always confused me as a kid- it even got referred to with pics in early kid's books, so I saw it before seeing the movie and didn't understand what happened.
    It was a late enough cut that really early merchandise still had scenes deleted- my first experience with the concept. Raw SW/Indy footage would be a holy grail, especially as deepfake tech advances.

    One of my favorite, albeit minor bits of lost content from Return of the Jedi, which wasn't brought up here, is that originially, there were supposed to be at least three female Rebel pilots in the film. They would have been portrayed by Vivienne Chandler, Poppy Hands and an unidentified third actress. While Hands' role technically made it into the final film, her lines were dubbed over by a male actor, presumably to hide the fact that the character was originially intended to be a woman.

    Indy doesn't need to be told not to touch the Ark and to use the staves instead, that much is detailed in the Bible, which he clearly has studied, particularly with respect to the Ark of the Covenant. The description in the Bible includes mention of the rings for the staves, so that the Ark can be carried without touching it.
    Funny also that you didn't mention why Indy's fight with the swordmaster was shortened - the final shots were to be done on a day when Harrison Ford was sick, and could barely stand up. That's why he looks so haggard in the shot, as he opts to shoot the swordmaster. What I swear changed between the original theatrical cut and all subsequent releases was the removal of his dialog as he shoots - you can clearly see him mouth the words "oh shit".

    • @YesterworldEntertainment
      @YesterworldEntertainment  Před 3 lety +6

      Because honestly, that "fact" is pretty much common knowledge and I get so tired of people thinking it's some sort of "secret" that nobody else knows, so I felt that going into it was just pointless. It's also so bogged down by inconsistencies...some say Spielberg had the idea, some say Harrison did...some say it was on the spot and improvised, some say it was planned right before shooting the scene, etc.

    So originally the scene with Vader and Ben the lightsabers were motorized and they spun a reflective film on the rods creating a shimmering effect, They encountered a problem with actually dueling with them where the mechanism would stop, the reflective film would come off and the rods bending. Later they found it easier to rotoscope the blades on. From what I’m aware they clipped into the prop hilts since they were made of old camera flash holder for Vader’s and an amalgamation of random items for Ben’s. A wire to the battery pack was ran up the sleeves of the actors to the hilts, and you can still see Ben’s in the fight pre-2011 Blu-Ray release and in the picture in the video. In the end they took the reflective rods inserted them inside the hilts and again just rotoscoped them in post.
