I don't need a star for the movie but I will give the biggest star ever a straight 10% cut of the movie revenue. Lol it sounds a lot like you at least thought you needed a movie star.
Talk about a rock and a hard place..
JC clarified that MD was never offered 10%
Turned down $290 million..wow
He had no idea at the time. If told he would get $290 million, I'm don't doubt that he would of reevaluated those morals, just sayin.
@@clevertaco328 yes obviously, that is sort of the point Matt was making
He would never get that much, they would do a little bit of Hollywood accounting and he would be happy if he gets any money at all in the end.
@@bojanivanisevic1072 Nah you don't know whether it was 10% of the revenue or the profits. Matt Damon is experienced and rich enough where he can have the proper lawyers that can set him up with the right deals.
@@KurtGodel-po3zl I'm not talking to matt though, now am I?
He helped James Cameron save $290 million.. Such a great guy.
At least he got a pat on the back from James Cameron
Tbf he’d have gotten screwed over, Hollywood accounting would fudge the gross profit of that film to the main studio down hundreds of millions diverting that to smaller companies the studios own as subsidiaries (anything from makeup, CGI, filming, equipment anything which is done would be down on paper as profit for a different company from the main studio) so he would have made nothing close to $290 million at all, still a lot but the biggest studios screw Actors with those deals
On paper, infinity war was a loss for Disney but that’s only “on paper” from the main studio but there was countless, literally countless, small “separate companies” owned by Disney to ensure nobody but Disney would earn anything from the profits, like any comic writers who negotiated a percentage of their characters are used
Forest gump too, the writer of the book chose percentage cut to money out right and got absolutely screwed through this kind of accounting, making less than 10k for one of the greatest films of all time being made from his story.
Matt Damon didn’t turn down nearly as much as you’d think
Cameron is so arrogant. “This movie doesn’t need a star but since you’re a star I’ll give you 10% if you do the move” so movie does need a star then?
I’m your 1000th like
@@petedearden he was kinda right though
I respect that Damon was commited to making sure a movie he had already signed on for was made well, instead of just jumping ship asap for the bread.
I wish D&D could do the same in Game of Thrones
Yeah it speaks a lot in movies if you can be dependable. I doubt a studio will want to keep hiring you if you prove to be unreliable
He wouldn't get this kind of offers if he wasn't reliable!
If Cameron had offered him 290 mil instead of a promise of 10% of an unknown amount, then Matt would have been gone faster than you could say "Omg it's Jason Bourne!"

Sean Connery was offered $30 million and 15% of the profits for LOTR if he agreed to play Gandalf
Thank god he turned it down, nothing against Sean Connery, I just can't imagine
If it was "the profits", Mr. Connery made a smart decision. Hollywood accounting means most movies never turn a profit, despite raking in millions upon millions. If you are ever offered a percentage deal, always, *always* go for part of the gross earnings, not profits or you could walk away literally empty handed.
@@MrPounceTV they made 2 billion after expenses. So he would have made about 300 million
@@bimmerdude7158 While I've not followed the financial side of LOTR, that's great news if that's what was officially recorded and they played it straight. But historically, it's not the norm.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was offically recorded as a 167 million dollar "loss" from WB. Return of the Jedi grossed almost half a billion in ticket sales, but the actor who played Darth Vader (the man, not the voice) never got his share of the 'profit' because of Hollywood Accounting. Just something to keep in mind if you ever find yourself staring down the barrel of a contract.
@@MrPounceTV I'm sure that happens now and then, but if losing money was the norm there would be no incentive to make movies, and nobody would risk financing them.

He would have made $290 million off it. So a net worth increase of 170%. The highest an actor has been paid for one movie was Bruce Willis when he got $20 million and 17% of the sixth sense totaling &115 million. Would have blow away the record. Gotta sting but you’re right he’s not gonna wind up on the streets for turning it down and he had a good reason not to do it.
There's a big difference between being worth $170m, and being worth nearly a half a billion. It's the difference between charting private planes, versus purchasing your own plane.
To put it in perspective, if he took $170m and invested it at a standard compounding rate, he would be worth $1 billion by the time he's about 90. If he took $500m and did the same, he'd be worth $1 billion before his 55th birthday.
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 wow, really? There's a difference between 170 million and 460 million? No way!
