- This video is all about how I package and ship art. I know when I first starting selling art trying to figure how to ship art was a nightmare. Where do I buy my shipping supplies, do I include my cost for shipping in the price of my artwork? How do I know how much shipping is going to cost if I haven't sold the painting yet? Since I like to paint really large artwork, that poses a whole other challenge, especially when shipping overseas. Here in this video, I'm going to share with you how I set my shipping prices for international and North America, as well as, what shipping companies I like to use. I'm going to share how I was able to figure out a fair price for shipping for buyers when I don't even know where those buyers live yet.

Bravo! Once again really good information! Also I must comment how comfortable you look in front of the camera, I’m so happy you’re a rising star in CZcams. Shipping it really is an issue for most of us, I’m in Mexico, the postal service is not very reliable here, so I would have to use a shipping company. I think including or splitting the cost of shipping with the customer is a great idea. Everyone loves free shipping!

Very helpful-thank you so much for sharing! I shipped two 36x40 canvases to Hawaii a few years back ($465). Not having shipped any artwork before that, it was definitely an eye opener! I did have FedEx handle the packing too. The interesting thing was that 2day Air was actually cheaper than crating and shipping “ground”. Just the time element on going by sea was ridiculous, not to mention, where and how long was the art work sitting while waiting on the docks/warehouse etc. Your suggestion of taking the bigger art off the stretcher and rolling it is spot on. Again, thank you-your videos are excellent!!

Who is selling all this art online? I'm amazed. Vincent van Gogh painted over 900 pieces of art and only sold one piece in his lifetime. And that was to a fellow artist.

I’ve been so frightened of trying to charge such high prices for shipping but it seems that people are willing to pay it for art if they love it enough, at least going by what you’re saying here. You give me hope that there are enough people out there that will invest if I decide to try larger paintings.

Question: Do you feel like offering rolled paintings detours any buyers that don’t want to have to mess with taking care of having it mounted? Also, do you offer framing if people want or do you just choose a frame for some pieces and offer them framed? Do people seem to care about the frame much? So many questions.Sorry. 😆

Hi Lori, I have a question, please. What did you do when you first wanted to start selling? These packaging items all come in such a large quantity. I've been painting for years now. But have been trying to sell online just recently. Have only sold one so far. The expense of the wholesale packaging seems overwhelming. Thanks so much for all you put out there and all your help.
I would have keep boxes and go to furniture warehouses and ask for their foam wrap that came off furniture. If you are just starting out then buying in bulk isn't probably what you need. Think of this video as a best case scenario. I saved everything when I was first starting out. I would get boxes from anywhere I could and would cut them to the size I needed.

Hi Lori - thank you for the great information! I've been using soft and oil pastels on my abstract paintings lately...do you know if it's possible to use a varnish over that so that I can roll these up for shipping? They are very large paintings (48x48)
Oil pastels never dry so you shouldn't varnish over them and therefore I don't think that would be suitable for rolling.

Timely subject matter. I'm just thinking about setting up my storefront on my site and these are questions I have. I'm the kind of person that would have waited until I got an order to start figuring it out. I want to document everything I learn and put it up on my youtube channel to share as well. I've seen several different ways to package a painting for shipping so it's interesting to see the various different approaches everyone takes and the things they are considering. I guess I just don't expect any sales right away so I figured I would have some time. lol

I am looking everywhere for information about the customs documents you need to ship from Canada to the USA... do you have any guidance on this? I make acrylic paintings as well and also am located in Toronto.

I'm going to talk about this question in my insta subscribed group I think as I get asked this question a lot.
But I will say customs are the responsibility of the buyer and should I have ever been asked to pay them, I would tell them that.
Hi Lori, thanks for your videos. When you take your paintings off the stretchers and roll them to ship, does the Gallery put them on new stretchers? Is this normal practice with most galleries?
Yes the gallery owner has them re-stretched on a new frame. I can’t speak to other galleries. That’s something that would need to be discussed with each individual gallery.

I have a another question, I use acrylic and spray bomb for may paintings, you think it will crack if I don't mix paint with a flexible modeling paste ?! And how much can it cost for the client to put it back on a wood frame ? Thanks ! 😀🙏
The flexible modeling paste isn't used because I want to roll my paintings. I use it to add texture to the canvas. The reason I specify that it's flexible is because there are two different types. One that is only to be used on a solid surface and the other flexible one can be used on canvas.
I can't give you an estimate on how much it would cost to have it restretched. That's for the client to determine as it depends on size location and where they take it to have it placed back on to the canvas.

Can you get discounts (from DHL, UPS, FedEx) based on volume of shipping and whether you have a business account?
Very good question. Yes I’m sure you would. But if I was shipping that many large pieces, a discount on shipping would be nice but not necessary 🤣
Yes anyone can negotiate a reduction in cost for a business account. But there has to be a volume to warrant the reduction.
How much money do you spend on shipping supplies for one 36x36” piece for example?
I looked at these corner protectors, and it’s literally insane. With how expensive everything else is, and how much TIME it takes to package, I’d have to charge my customer $300+ to cover materials, my time (1-2 hours), and the actual shipping fee, just to cover my bases.
Wondering what you charge your clients, and how much is reasonable to spend per packaging of one piece.
It be honestly I really don't know what the breakdown cost would be. I purchase everything in bulk. But I know it wouldn't cost $300. I don't charge for shipping either. Unless it's going international. It does take a lot of time to package. I sold 42 paintings last week during my Mini painting release and I packaged paintings for almost 3 days straight. It's all part of the process.

Could you please explain how customs duties and taxes are handled and who is responsible for those costs when shipping internationally and you don't have a customs broker? I am seeing conflicting information from other sources. Some say that there are no duty fees because of the RH code for art, but other sources say that the purchaser has to pay the duties or the sender has to pay the duties.

There is no duty on original art the HS code that you need to put in your custom invoices is HS 9701.1010.10 HS stands for harmonized System. Duty and taxes are a different thing. Everyone over a certain dollar amount decided by their country has to pay taxes on purchases made outside of their country. The buyer is responsible to to pay the taxes on their purchases.

I am just starting this business online. I have a question and maybe you can answer it here. I have paintings of so many sizes and I notice Uline sells boxes in quantity of 5 and up. What can I do to economize in buying so many sizes of the same size when in reality I need boxes of different sizes? Please help me with suggestions!
Until it makes sense to buy the large lots of boxes, start off with buying sheets of cardboard (palette dividers) and then make your own boxes 😊

Thanks Lori. Do you put insurance on all your paintings when you ship?
No shipping company covers the cost of original artwork if it gets damaged painting they’ll only reimburse you for the cost of shipping. If you want to ensure a painting you have to have your own private insurance company cover that. So no I don’t get insurance should something go wrong I am responsible for covering it for the clients which is why I try and make sure my paintings are packed properly.

I'd like to apologize, sincerely, for my mean remarks. I'd show you some of my paintings, but I recently lost a hard drive that had all the photos of my paintings over the last few years. Maybe I can find a stray photo somewhere. Each painting is completely and utterly different from each of the others. I've haven't painted for six months due to economic and health reasons. I understand that you're making a living from this, and that people may want to buy something that is recognizably by Lori Mirabelli. But for any creative artist of obvious talent, such as yourself, I think it's always a useful question to ask where the line is between "finding a personal style" and sinking into a permanent rut. Keep pushing your boundaries.
Galleries want to see an artist be able to produce works in bodies, not just create one off's. Think in terms of the musical bands that had one hit wonders....You don't want to be a one hit wonder artist (that does't show well if you want to be a professional artist)...I have several different bodies of work that I work in...Some artist get to the point where it's an assembly line. I'm not one of those. I try and carry something over in a new body of work so that I'm still recognized and I also create works in bodies.
To keep from falling into a rut and recreating the exact same work over and over you have to keep expanding and growing as an artist, explore and trying new things while carrying over a few of the old tricks. Evolving is key to keep the mind interested in creating new work. Some artist fear that new work won't sell thus they get caught in a rut. Some artist have never honed their artist skills enough to be able to evolve and stay for year and years creating the same work.. I create because I love it and my brain is a tad over active....the side effect of that is have good sales and I never get tired of painting. If you checked my insta I'm sure you'll see I'm not a one hit wonder nor do I recreate the same art. You will find that there is a thread that carry's over to each new piece I create.

You're a commercially successful artist, and for that you should be very happy indeed, since few people can make it as artists. And to that extent you should just ignore my remarks. But no, I'm not likely to follow you on Instagram or CZcams. I initially was interested enough to watch several of your videos, and it caught my attention when you said that as a student you were fascinated by color theory -- as I am -- but I guess I didn't really see that in your art. Yes, of course galleries want you to produce a "body" of work -- they want artists to be factories that produce predictably saleable works. I'm more interested in following artists who do what THEY want to do, not what galleries want them to do. The Beatles weren't "one-hit wonders." They had many hits over a decade of work -- each of them different from the others. They sold because they were consistently creative -- not just consistent. But to return to the start, you should be thrilled and happy with your success, as anyone should be. I would be.
