  • How to price your art to sell can be confusing as there are so many factors that you need to take into consideration. Most artists creating artwork in their art studios whether it be for art fairs, online art websites, galleries, or sold directly by you have to consider how to price artwork correctly. There are many methods that are outlined online, like the per square inch method, hourly wage, or the cost of art supplies to create the original painting multiplied by a number determined by your skill level. How do you know which method to price your art paintings is right for you?
In this video, I will explain which method of pricing my original paintings I chose plus the reasons why. I will also share the one mistake or caution you should be aware of so you don't stall your art career.
If you found this video helpful please remember to give a thumbs up and comment down below.

I just retired from a career that started as a freelance illustrator and ended in numerous areas in the advertising/marketing industry. Even though I was an illustration major in college, I would seriously advise budding artists to be business majors and take art classes along the way. Your advice is spot on! In my retirement I’m getting back to non commercial art and will be using your ideas to market my work. My little piece of advice for artists new to this is to paint more so that the sheer volume keeps you from falling in love with your own creations.

my sister was like that. She was an amazing artist but couldn't part with anything! She was in a financial pickle, and I bailed her out, but she insisted she paint me something to pay for it. She did! then later asked for the painting back because she missed it, lol. Her house was completely covered with her paintings when she passed, and all were just amazing. She just couldn't part with them! Her ex got them all, including the one she had painted for me.

To be honest your success is all because of that positive karma you build for yourself, you give so much that other artists would be too selfish to do (as myself, maybe it's because I'm young and still have a lot to learn), you inspire so much, you reply every time, you radiate positivity and for just the few weeks that I've been following you I feel so inspired, motivated and grateful that I've stumbled upon such an amazing human. My profession is I am a semi retired accountant and tax professional with 45+ years of experience and hopefully soon will retire and do abstract acrylic pouring art. It sure is much satisfying doing art instead of taxes and accounting. I agree 100% with you in regards to the square inch method and put a dollar amount to it. Figuring products used and etc is so time consuming and also researching like you said what other artists is doing is a great price method to come up with and a very easy way to calculate.

I want to add that if you are curious you can always keep a journal, it could be as simple as a grocery bag and marker in your work space, list the project(s) you are working on and write down the hours or minutes you gave to that project from designing to shopping for paint. It doesn't have to be perfect but it gives you and idea of the time you have put into a piece of art. It doesn't have to affect your pricing but artists after they have finished are like women who have given birth, they get amnesia about the 9 months of growing a human and the hours and pain spent in labor, all they can see is the product of that work, nothing else. With a baby its unconditional, love. With a painting not always, and not so much. We sometimes have in inner critic who takes over and we can devalue that work. Reminding yourself about how much you put into creating sometimes helps keep you from undervaluing what you have made. Just a thought.

Good advice. I have been a professional artist for a long time but just entering the painting arena, not sure why but it called. I know I will have to start from a humble place, this is new to me. The exciting part is knowing I will grow and there is so much to learn. I love the learning part. I sadly have seen so many "artists" over the years get excited about the money and think they can slap a fat price tag on a piece of art and that is what will make it good art. So many people thinking that this is all some kind of game you just have to find you way into. It can be but an artists doesn't paint for money, they make art because they can not, not make art. It is a part of who we are and we do it even if money doesn't follow. Business sadly is a part of the process, and as an artists you have to find a way to get comfortable with it.

Totally a Virgo and totally agree with you about being a Virgo. Excellent practical info on pricing art Lori. I once tried to calculate my cost of supplies and it made my brain melt. It hurts a little just thinking about it. Thanks for the great video.

I use the inch method swell, and it works. Special collectors understand the so called "art factor" :-) Thank you again for this vid

Thanks Lori! That was so helpful as I am now building my “body of work”...and you were the one, who just by saying “you need to have a body of work” has really gotten a fire going under my “beehind.” Yes, I’ve got things I can sell, but not enough...plus I’m going to be redoing/renaming my website. So pricing is something that I’m gonna be facing soon. I really appreciate the practical advice. Take care.👍🤩

Thank you so much for tackling this tricky subject of price and talking $$$!
I am a fellow virgo and completely get what you say about being precise and being a bit of a perfectionist :) I also use the $ per square inch formula - I find it the easiest and most sensible way to price your work. As you get more seasoned and well-known you increase your price by little increments, just like you say in your video. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for this good information. I just paint from time to time, more as a hobby and i did not sell any artwork yet because i don't find it easy to ship these paintings. I live in Belgium and i think it's a big job to pack and send paintings around Europe or further.
