  • I became a full time abstract artist during the 2020 pandemic. This is the story of my art Journey. In this video, I discuss my Instagram growth strategies 2020 and art business tips that blew up my art business page on Instagram over the last 7 months!! and so many of you have been asking me for tips on how I increased my Instagram growth and wondering how I'm selling my paintings online. Also, asking questions like, am I advertising on Facebook or Instagram, and what's my growth strategy. Well, I heard you, and here are some things that I changed in my art career practice that helped me to gain more Instagram and google organic traffic. The end result is, I now have organic growth driving traffic to my artist website which increased my ability to sell my abstract paintings online.
    For those that have asked about how I started my abstract art career, I started this video off by sharing how this all began for me back in 2008 and eventually was able to become a full-time abstract artist. First selling on Etsy and then building my own website through Wix and eventually moving to Shopify.
    If you like this video please let me and CZcams know by giving me a thumbs up and leaving me a comment here. Every little bit helps me to dedicate more time to building this channel for you all and sharing things that I have learned along the way.
    AND FYI - lol took me until the end of this video to figure out my mic LOL

    @woodspiritstudio Před 3 lety +1

    You're awesome! I've been working as an artist for approximately 25 years and so much of what you said is the same goals, fears, uncertainties, determination that I had in the beginning. What I have learned over the years is this, what I tell people who say they envy me.... wish they could quit their 9-5 job and become an artist. I tell them I wish I had the mindset to work a 9-5 job, have a definite income every week, punch in at 9, work til 5, and then go enjoy the rest of my day. Paid sick leaves and vacations, 401k's, insurance benefits and others to cover for me when I'm sick or on vacation. As an artist, you not only have to create the artwork yourself, but also purchase supplies, keep track of supply and completed pieces of art inventory, learn to create a professional online presence via many different platforms, answer emails and create mailing lists... run promotions, learn to use a camera, take professional grade photos of all your work, edit photos.... upload photos on all your platforms... packaging sold pieces and get packages shipped out in a timely fashion, design marketing tools like business cards, flyers, discount cards to hand out while out in public.... in other words promote promote promote! AND, seek out venues to sell art through such as art shows, galleries, wholesale to giftshops or sell on consignment, offer commissioned work, fill out applications for shows and galleries and if accepted make damn sure enough inventory is ready in time on top of having enough artwork to keep online sales venues stocked.... load up artist tent, displays and inventory for shows... travel then unload and set up.... work work work the busy show weekends, them immediately after the show closes, pack up and load up my booth and any remaining inventory and drive back home to once again unload the art show stuff. Check emails and if any sales were made online while away at the show and get orders shipped out. Call or email shops and galleries to see how their inventory is doing and get any work they need completed and delivered first.... THEN.... after checking and ordering any needed supplies, start working again creating enough inventory for the next art show. Because I work with natural items I collect off of the beaches and forests where I live, I also have to make sure I have stockpile large enough to get me through the long winter months. Summers I wake at 4 or 5 a.m. and, like you Lori, go in all different directions doing any number of things instead of sitting focused on one project start to finish like I should be doing.... but working for myself, I freely admit, I totally lack self-discipline ... but somehow I always managed to keep up with the inventory. I spend more hours a day though than 8 hours on things art related when i am not actually making the art. I'm horrible at math so I have no clue how many hours I spend per piece, or how much art supply i used per piece... and add in art show entry fees, travel expense, internet and website fees and time online promoting and updating sites.... so... what Im actually getting paid per month is anyones guess and although bills and basic needs are met financially, I do not make enough to set aside a comfortable retirement nest egg. SO... to those who envision artists living some romantic relaxing lifestyle and contemplating quitting their 9-5 and the securities it offers, think real hard about how much time, effort and sacrifice you're willing to invest in making a living making and selling art. One last note.... I wouldn't change a thing about the decisions Ive made and the journey its taken me on in life.

    Your story is so similar to mine! 😊 I always wanted to be an artist and always had an interest in psychology as well. The way the human mind works is very intriguing 🤔. Anyway, I am self taught though, but I'm feeling really grateful for it. I also started with drawing, I love making portraits! Would have started to paint earlier, but couldn't afford it really, having 3 kids. I started last year and I am thinking about doing this for a living. Thank you for this video! Then I found your videos and I can't paint fast enough. I'm so appreciative of all your advice and for the first time I feel like I have a solid plan. I like to hide so posting pictures of myself are going to be like pulling teeth but I will go for it. I have been back to painting on and off for 2-3 yrs. Serendipity that this came up on my CZcams. I wasn’t even looking at art. No actually for the first time I allowed myself to go on Wikipedia looking at a street artist ( Keith Haring) because I’d seen someone ask a question about fav artists on twitter. I take art for granted. And don’t do it cause I’m too distracted by life: Your video reminds me of when I did a picture of my art teacher and he walked round the room looking at everybody’s and stopped dead at my nd. He was shocked to see himself on the page. You know I’ve never painted. And am about to. So nice to see your journey. If I could make a dollar that’s be great. A living. You are such an inspiration in so many ways not the least of which is your talent.

    Lori, thank you so much for generously sharing all of this information. I have listened to webinars, taken classes, and done research about how to optimize Instagram to help drive art sales but none of these educations were provided by actual artists themselves. What you have shared here is all IMMEDIATELY useful to me as an artist and I can't thank you enough for the tips. I've already changed my name on my IG profile to "Oil and Cold Wax Abstract Art"!

It's so scary to put yourself out there and actually try to charge for your work. It's so nice to find a fellow Toronto artist and I'll be following you and looking forward to more videos. As to domain names, what is stopping you from taking out additional domain names for $25 year (w/privacy) and simply forwarding (redirecting) the additional domain names to your existing web site? Additional domain names that you wish you had used. Just a thought. Not very expensive and easy to do. The domain service provider can assist.

      If you used your name as the domain name and always connect your name to your work it won't matter as you grow, your name will become a search term. People like talking about the artist hanging on their wall. Always sign your work. Then you also have freedom to branch out in styles and mediums!

      Lori your explanation of how basic SEO works is great help to artists. You must be careful with some of this. This is 2021 not like 2005 when search engines much simpler. It's important to do some more research about. Some of the things you mentioned are "shortcuts, or tricks, that may have been sufficient to guarantee a high ranking back in the day when the engines’ methods were much less sophisticated. (They might even work now, at least until you’re caught.)" This I snagged from a pro website developer. Important not to get too carried away with SEO and concentrate on making good art! BUT the NOT using a 3rd party for instagram is VERY VERY IMPORTANT!

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  Před 3 lety

      @@adamart-music-crypto2296 There is way more to SEO than naming an image file to get a good ranking lol this is only one step that I shared. I'm not sure what you mean by getting caught? Keyword stuffing in your headings and tags would be an issue that would lower your ranking. File naming isn't that. 😊
      In my first video, I emphasized the body of work must come first. Doesn't matter if you are ranked first on google, if you haven't mastered your craft your art will not move. and yes the last thing you would want is insta shutting down your account for a violation.

Phone pix are large and clear enough to be stolen and printed on various items, one couldn't print a poster from it but can make shirts, mugs, calendars, 8x10/12x14's, totes etc. Just so people know, that won't protect them if a person can send the photo to themselves somehow off IG or if one uses phone pix on other sites they can be lifted directly (etsy, websites, fb....or shows you are in post your pix to advertise upcoming shows on their sites).

      @@joan-lisa-smith ahhh I lost my comment if I posted this twice my bad. I honestly don't worry about that. I paint large and then stealing a photo from insta, Facebook or my website isn't going to give you a good image. At least not one that I would pay for. I could be at an art show and leave my booth for a second and someone can take a photo with a full-frame high-resolution camera and make a gorgeous giclée without me even knowing it. So I'm honestly not worried about it.
