- During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career - and with it his life - is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.
This trailer purposefully includes captions (just like the film itself) so that hearing and non-hearing audiences can experience Ruben’s journey.
Sound of Metal arrives in select theaters November 20, and on Prime Video December 4 in the U.S.

This film is a masterpiece about coming to terms with a loss, embracing the world changing, the 5 stages of grief, so many lessons here. The cast are brilliant. Recommend 10/10

Riz Ahmed is one actor who hasn't been utilized properly yet! Terrific potential.

@@matthewrobinson2053, I wouldn't say so. People would've wanted to pay respect to Chadwick, so that wouldn't've changed. Hopkins' performance is very loud, they love him and he has been getting buzz ever since Sundance. Oldman is playing a real person in a very Oscar-y film. The only one that might've missed out on the nom in a regular year was Yeun, because his performance isn't flashy at all. But then again, Minari got a lot more noms than more traditionally baity films like Ma Rainey and One Night in Miami, so I wouldn't count him out in a regular year. But Riz Ahmed's perf is my favorite of the year, so I get the sentiment
Riz Ahmed is a brilliant actor!! He is so sexy in this film!!! He has an abundance of deserving awards ...
Also, he has a sense of humor about all the racism he deals with... he can't enter an airplane without some racist shithead detaining him... even though he's a well-known actor and born in London...
Also, did you watch "the night of " ??? He is amazing!!! I have a huge crush on him.
This isn't a 2 hr info movie about being deaf or wearing ear plugs. It's about loss of superficial love (music, girlfriend) and unveiling real love (community, self discovery) through a multi-year struggle with addiction. A movie to watch to the very end and again.

@Milesgatman Because they are some of the loudest and aurally dangerous bands you can see live. Most are an incredible experience, but some were just downright uncomfortable, where I was left partially deaf for days.

Don't know why the drummer in the movie didn't just wear ear protection and continue doing the shows. Like he says, he could be a click track. I guess the movie wouldn't happen then
I've seen most of those bands... with earplugs. It's hip to be square sometimes. Mogwai is pretty tame these days, though. I can't imagine how loud they sounded back in the day.
Riz Ahmed deserves an Oscar . The movie deserves an Oscar for sound mixing or sound editing too
This is a very real thing. I played drums for years and I would hear ringing well over 24 hours after a show.
Luckily for me it wasn't permanent.
I went to a show a year ago and I was right up at the stage, there was no spacing like in some venues, every now and then I get a ringing in my ear, it has been happening less frequently though, hopefully it will go away for good. You should definitely wear ear plugs if your on or right up at the stage.
Used to be in a band in my early 20s, never wore plugs but regret it so much now. I get ringing in my ears constantly but luckily my hearing is still quite sharp. If I'd give any advice to young boys and girls out there getting into the gigging scene - WHERE EAR PLUGS!

This movie was so beautiful and hit me especially hard with this past year of the pandemic taking so much of what we are used to in life, out of our control. The movie isn’t really about being deaf or about music, it’s about finding beauty and acceptance in the life that’s given to you no matter how painful. That true contentment comes from within, and external stimuli no matter how seemingly fundamental like sound/music or the love of another person, is just that: external. And these things will not bring you peace until you find it within yourself. One of the most powerful movies I’ve ever seen.
I really like this movie as well, I have been into difficult time the last 3 years because a rare disease and also an addiction and this kind of movie make me stronger because I feel that there is people having 100 x time harder difficulties/problem in life, and I feel lucky with my more modest problem.
There is a japanese drama called (one litre of tears) who is even worst than that, this movie really help me a lot in life, because I know that they were some people who wanted to live so much but couldn't because of a disease, I feel that almost all the problem that I can have, are nothing compare about what some people can go throught.
About the pandemic, I really feel (and it's just my feeling, I'm not judging anyone) that people make a very big deal for something not that bad... Some people couldn't endure and act like life was the worst just because they couldn't travel,go to restaurant or stuff like that. Tell some one who is dying and has only few month remaining that you want to kill your self because you can't go out after 22h, how will he react.... I feel that for the people who are having atrocious disease we really can't complain for something that light (again that's my feeling about it).

As someone who is hard of hearing and has been wearing hearing aids since the age of three, I can’t express enough how much this film means to me. Anyone has that feeling after watching a moving movie that makes you just feel different. Can’t stop thinking about this movie since last night. Very real and melancholic
When we are passionately in love with something and we suddenly lose a tool without which you cannot pursue your passion then your world goes upside down within few moments and our mentality cannot adopt to that sudden rapid descent movement in our life.. During this course of time we lose few more important things due to that loss of tool.. This film exactly captures that particular losing phase of life and it justifies it so well by its execution.. Sound is one of the important things in this film, if they had done even a little mistake this wouldn't have created an impact like it did... The kind of subjective experience this film gives us is very rare in today's movies.. suddenly it goes to a wide shot and gives us the objective experience through the sound which i think is impeccable and it's wonderful to see a debutant director making a movie like this..
I love the very first scene, it starts with some brilliant sound and lighting and it sets up the tone of the movie very well..I liked how he tries to understand the new self but how he also can't live with what he is missing..Generally we expect the dialogues to fill the gaps in between the silences in a story like this but it has brought more impact on the movie, it makes the silence more terrifying and emotional..Riz Ahmed's every minute detail in his performance moves us closer to his psyche..though Olivia cookie is there for a short amount of time there are moments where her subtle expressions speak soooo much to Riz Ahmed's character..
Physical problems are often looked up as just "physical problems" but it is as mental as it is physical..the problem becomes bigger when the person in pain or the people around can't understand how to deal with it and it's hard to accept it or make it a part of our lives but if we won't do that, it will destroy us mentally too..this movie shows this feeling in a tremendous way
And the 2021 Oscar goes to... Riz Ahmed
This looks incredible.
Being a musician, hearing loss is my worst fear. I actually got to experience it in 1993 after contracting a bizarre fungal infection in both ears from the Caribbean Ocean. For 3 months I gradually lost 85%+ of my hearing. Talk about depression. I got it back after treatment along with some chronic tinnitus but I'm not gonna complain. Definitely wear those ear plugs kids!!
Iam 26 and when i was 18 I'd lost 45% of my hearing ... main reason being "HEAVY METAL"... Iam a lead guitarist and when I found out my hearing is deteriorating my heart was broken in half...but my will power and love for guitar and music made me a stronger man... its been 8 years and I've learnt lip reading, kept my ear in good condition, avoid loud noises, routine checkups with my doctor and still playing plus listening to music I love the most...METAL
I saw this three times already. Twice on Amazon Prime and once in theaters when they reopened here in NYC. It’s a tremendous directorial debut.
Such an underrated actor! Cant wait to see this =)
I really hope this film really captures the emotions you go through when losing hearing properly, the trailer looks great I can’t wait to see the final product.
This was the best film for me this year. What a gem. Riz Ahmed, hands down.
Kinda made me forget he is british.
Omg!! Is he??
@@maruparra1963 Yes he is.

Best movie Ive seen this year, he should win best actor!
saw him in 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist" for the first time and loving him since then. What a great actor!
I love riz Ahmed, what showed me how great an actor he is was watching the OA and then watching him in Nightcrawler. They were such different roles/characters and he was completely believable in both. He didn’t just play a version of himself, he completely transformed and his characters aren’t one dimensional. Awesome!
Riz’s performance is maybe one of the best I have ever seen. He truly one impeccable actor.
Good to see Riz Ahmed acting again, also y'all should go check out his album he made. It was different but I fucked with it.
Yes !!!!
Harry Cantwell of Bosse-de-nage, an amazing drummer, provided some of the drum work for the film. Love the recognition he and the band is getting.
This piece gets me totally man! What an absolute moment of truth to appreciate what you have now and the next moment without any of it! Proud to be a part of this culture! Horns up! Sound of Metal is the Sound of Truth! Love Riz!
Finally something worth watching.
When the trailer alone is making you tear up...
Best movie. When I first watched it I could hear it. now 8 months later I lost hearing in my right ear and soon my left. But man was this movie beautiful to listen to. This movie deserves an Oscar
This show was amazing and filled with deep feelings for this guy..he deserves an award for his acting skills ...
Saw this at TIFF last year and was wondering when it would finally get picked up. It was brilliant. Riz was phenomenal.
I did too! So happy to see it getting the recognition it deserves!
If Riz doesn’t win the Oscar for this! We Riot
🤦🏻♀️

As much as I wanted to agree with you, I believe this year's Oscar is reserved for Chadwick Boseman. Holywood is really into posthumous thing.
@@BruceWayne-in7kg oscars dumb. Rioting dumb. Do I need to say more

Riz Ahmed survived Nightcrawler but lost his hearing lmao
