Thanks for the great comparisson video. I am personally contemplating on how to approach my personal favorites in gaming and your videos are a good approach to compare two games, I feel.
Just wondering: in terms of a personal view on games, how much do nostalgia and emotional connection towards a game impact your view on it? Would you say it's fine to love a game based of that you simply had a lot of fun with it personally, even if it might be qualitatively not the greatest nowadays?

To those people I say, the game doesnt even start til after you leave white orchard which is literally a tutorial area. So pick it back up and give it a real chance. This is one of if not the greatest game ever and you're missing out fr. I say this as someone who also couldnt get into the game at first and now ive beaten it 5x with over 1000 hrs.

There are moments when this concept works perfectly, but so many scenes fall flat because of the lack of music. Why is there no majestic track when I'm riding across Hyrule field? Why is there no instrument in this game? Music was always an important element of Zelda games, some of them even had their name given in regards to an instrument. I offen enjoy tue minimalistic tunes of BOTW but climbing Hyrule Castle and suddenly enjoying the fantastic track just makes me wish that more areas featured their own songs.

Yep. It was clearly a design choice and they made the right one. Light ambient music works much better than overpowering orchestral pieces in an open world like that. You can actually feel and hear the wild of the world and just enjoy the subtle sounds of nature. Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing. They usually do.

Jason Gooden play it for 60 hours and tell me if you still feel that way. I got so bored by the end because there’s no progression in abilities like in other Zelda games. There’s just weapons with bigger numbers to kill the enemies with bigger numbers.

    • @unlimited8410
      @unlimited8410 Před 4 lety

@@Faint366 I agree with you, I had a blast for the first half of the game, but then the other half was disappointingly boring since there was no more progression in weapons for me since I was basically endgame by then. There are some balancing issues, like in cooking for example, and a lack of progression systems later on in the game. There is little incentive to use other options of fighting when you already have a whole arsenal of weapons later in the game really destroying that feel of freedom when you can just use weapon to kill enemies, so weapon breakings was actually a good decision to add in imo. Once the progression system fails you realise how empty the other parts of botw are, like the story, dungeons and shrines for example. Hopefully with the sequel they could improve these issues, especially not trolling completionists with korok seeds, but for the first half of the game I would definitely rate it a 9.5/10.

What do you mean breaking weapons = what botw lacks?
Imagine botw, but without weapon durability? It doesn’t work, it won’t be as good.
Weapon breaking is one of the main reasons why we keep on exploring to get better weapons. And that’s also the reason why we sometimes run away from enemies or trying to kill enemies with creative ways like rolling the big boulders or using magnesis.
    It’s fun.
And it helps us get better with other weapons and adapt with changes.

I haven't played BotW as I don't have a console for the last few generations, but I think weapon durability does add different elements to adapt to. It can be good or bad depending on the game, but sounds like it is a good strategic thing for the BotW. I think the way The Witcher 3 does it works well as repairs provides a good money sink, and weapons can be switched easily as there is no shortage of finding them, and repairing or using a weaker weapon is a good choice to have available.

    • @hollywood7128
      @hollywood7128 Před 4 lety +11

The lack of an ability to repair weapons that you really like, I believe, hurt the game. I would explore to find a great weapon and NEVER want to use it because I didn't want it to break, but because of that I never really got to enjoy it. Permabreaking with no option to repair prior to the break penalized the desire to search for great weapons and use them.

Sidequests - witcher 3, no need to explain!

In actual ways they can be compared. RPG vs Adventure game.
World (Design) - BOTW and it shouldn't even be argued.
Story - Subjective. Writing goes to The Witcher 3 though it is worth mentioning that the story of BOTW is optional. The Witcher 3 isn't.
      Gameplay - BOTW
      Bosses - Witcher 3
      Controls - BOTW
Music - Subjective. Use of music probably works better in BOTW's case though being an open world game and all but they are too different to compare.
There isn't a whole lot that can be compared between the two games fairly but if we take each into consideration Breath of The Wild ends up being a superior open world action adventure game than The Witcher 3 as an open world action RPG. Since the open world and action aspects are clearly in Breath of The Wild's favor as far as actual game design is concerned. And both do amazing jobs at the last aspect. RPG for TW3. Adventure for BOTW.

To fully appreciate Witcher I feel that you need to fully experience and immerse yourself in the whole story, which means if you have got 100 odd hours spare, you won’t appreciate, whereas Zelda is very much a game you can easily dip in and out of in intervals and go explore the beautiful open world.
For the record, have only just started Witcher III on Switch and barely a few hours in - it’s crafted MAGNIFICENTLY from the point of view of a story but can already tell BoTW is more accessible and more fun to play - the joy of Witcher lies in unravelling the story, whereas the joy of BoTW is in the world that’s been crafted to fully explore.

I work as a music producer and mixing engineer, so i always listen carefully all music and sound fx in every game I play.
For my personal opinion, the music point is going for both the titles because how the music is treated in relation to the story and the gameplay.
In Breath of the Wild, I found they’re artistic choice perfect. You have few tracks going on so you’re mostly focusing on the natural environment. But than the music pops up and when it does, it feel so good, so precious, enhancing the moment perfectly, and that’s because the game wake you up from the habit of not to ear it.
    It serves your senses.
In The Witcher 3 the music is used in a more “canon” way, giving every place and situation a clear identity, and the composition level is stunning. Every track is memorable and perfectly placed, just think about how beautifully is riding over the Skeillege Islands... The Witcher world is so stunning also because of this.
So, both games use music for serving 100% the purpose of the gameplay, the identity and ofc, the world surrounding the player. And that’s why for me they both deserve the music point!
Sorry for the long comment and my poor English grammar ehehehe, thx

Another interesting category: replay value. While both games will feel different with multiple playthroughs, BotW will only change depending in what you're decide to do first. The decisions made in The Witcher go deeper and will present you with alternate endings to quests and stories. For me, the option to choose between Triss or Yennefer for romance was enough to warrant a second playtrough.

One man in a side quest tells you about where to go by stating location's geography. But when i reach that location. I find that location is completely different from what he says. For example he state that their is a board which tell you where to go but it is not located there.

What I hate most in witcher 3 is that there's a lot of question marks on the map. You can take a look at different stuff to find or fight monsters on these question marks.
This is good but however, it gets rid of that exploration and suprise factor to it as the question marks doesn't show up when just running around without having to open up the map to mark the waypoint to these question marks.
It could've been done better if they just didn't show the question marks on the map. This way there's that sense of adventure, exploration and rmrandomly finding stuff when just exploring and roaming around randomly

I don’t agree with the soundtrack one. Botw has an amazing soundtrack system. It has a lot of “invisible sound mechanics” for example the combat music changes based on the enemy, but not enough to make you notice, but enough to make you not start to get irritated by it, also when fighting, when you land a hit it actually plays the hit sound to the closest beat in the song, making it satisfying. The soundtrack seemingly changes during night, because it was recorded in a studio using real instruments, not digitally. There are a lot of sound tracks for the game. Told me you leave a village or a town you will most likely hear the wild soundtrack kick in, but what’s cool about it is that it actually changes a lot of times, making random notes and creating unique combos. The music is amazing and the fact that it sometimes doesn’t play is a good thing, because the sound design is amazing in this game

Idk what the point of the weather was if it didn't really effect anything. And I know for a fact there's at least a freezing buff of sorts in TW3, not sure why he didn't get cold in extreme weather outside of that world overtaken by the White Frost. The only place I've found so far where it matters outside of that is a few of the decoctions + potions which have special effects during certain weather.... but I live absolutely fine without them, I only use a few select ones and so it's still pointless to me xD
(That said... the workd and story and how it firs the world is a BIG thing for me. That's why I ended up preferring TW3 even though I played it after BotW. I really got into the world that was set up and really got my teeth into characters, so to speak. I loved the dynamics between them and I enjoyed that gray area the game constantly put me in. I'm the type to pour hours and hours into just reading everything in the game available, from random books lying around to bestiary entries. It’s totally just as interesting after we do the same thing 5000 times right?” The fans are the ones putting in the legwork to make those areas interesting because the game doesn’t give us any actual information about them.
Ya there are tons of areas to find in BotW, but what can you actually discover? A shrine? A treasure chest with some rock salt inside? Another Knight’s Sword? Cool... I found Witcher too difficult to understand. The simplicity of BOTW makes it more appealing. Witcher 3 had me so confused and frustrated. I didn't know if I was doing things right. Also, mixing potions? Taking elixirs? How do you beat a boss if the game doesn't teach you how to do these properly? At lest with zelda it's easy to know when you cook something how it will turn out. Maybe I missed something in the Witcher tutorial, or maybe the game falls short of teaching and it's not my fault. Or, on another level, maybe Witcher 3 is simply just not for casual gamers like myself. I bought Witcher 3 digitally on my switch so there's no returning it. I will give it a shot later, but for now, I'm way happier with BOTW. and that is from a huge Witcher book and TV show fan.....
