    Being as it plays at the same time, I read it in exactly the same way as you - that the "wolf" who breaks from the pack and closes with the deer, was meant to be Geralt (as he is from the school of the Wolf and is called "Wolf" by Vesimir) and that the deer was meant to be Yen as Geralt chases after her "Hart" - Hart being an old fashioned name for a deer and being a homonym in English for heart. (a homonym is a word that's spelled differently but sounds the same when spoken - like their, there and they're)
    So I'm not so sure that the dog/wolf in the ravine, has the same significance as the cut scene.

  • @HITandRUM
    @HITandRUM Před rokem +52

    Personally I always interpreted the wolf scene as an allegory for the sex act between them, and the wolf jumping to me actually caught the deer as a climax. I don't know what to think about the chasing interpretation, because it felt like it wasn't only geralt who chased Yenn, but Yenn also chased him sometimes when he had enough of her attitude. Since it's a dog, not sure if it is that wolf. But in that note the dead wolf (if it is really supposed to be the wolf in the cinematic) could be an image of Geralt's and Yenn's original death in the books, as Yenn also died trying to save geralt during the rivian pogrom. (I admit it's a bit of a stretch there though)

    • @thechongster

The same logic applies for the dog which thinks it is a wolf.

    • @3rzyk
      @3rzyk Před rokem +14

      @@xLetalis Okay, this is a big stretch but hear me out... Eredin is willing to chase Ciri until he dies, she's way more capable in *jumping* through worlds but he's not giving up, he's the head of the *wild hunt*, he dies after losing two of his generals and the scene actually kinda reminds me the ending of white orchid,
      Geralt chasing Yen makes less sense to me bc
      1. Bloodlust? Idk man, they were both in love afterall, just unable to deal with their own abnormalities and being stubborn (two donkeys would be a better fit imho)
      2. In the books there is no real chase going on, Geralt is trying small gestures sometimes and Yen is trying to help him without him noticing, a lot of arguments but not much "you're gonna be mine!!" attitude
      3. There are 3 wolves and as far as I know niether Eskel nor Lambert were chasing Yen together with Geralt...
      But then why is this showing up when they get together you ask? Well both of them were constantly seeing prophecies about Ciri's future, them getting together sounds like a pretty good occasion for a prophetic combo like this. And why is there a dog instead of a wolf? Idk, but Sapkowski described Eredin as a narcissistic dumbo, who tried to force Ciri into obiedience and got his ass kicked by her when she was just 14yo, to me it's like saying "Eredin is no wolf, just a rabid dog and there was no chance in hell of him capturing elder blood" (hence in reality the gap to jump is way bigger and there isn't even a ruined bridge for him to step on)
      But granted, my opinion is heavily relying on books, cdpr made this relationship look more like the early novels rather than continuation of the story of Yen dying trying to bring Geralt back to life so I guess your idea might be more accurate, or cdpr just wanted to paint the picture of how wild that s@x was and put the dog in there for the laughs knowing that there will be a bunch of dumbos like me writing a dissertation on the whole thing 😂

      I think it is a different one. There are many models that I cannot remember all since it’s 10 years ago and I was an intern back then. Back to the clip. I think the reason why the cut scene looks different from the real map mainly because the cutscene was rendered with the original Kaer Morhen. Same thing with White Orchard. They speed up the production in the last few months, and most of them are done by contractors whom no longer with CDPR anymore, hence I think there are still continuity issues till this day with no fix available.

    I feel like this would be a better metaphor for Yennefer as the wolf. She has a tough exterior but inside she deeply cares about those she loves like Geralt and Ciri. (Wolf vs dog appearance) However, her methods of showing love doesn’t always go as planned nor is it easy (like initially calling Ciri ugly as a pet name even though she cared about her). In the books when the reader sees her thoughts (after last wish and sword of destiny) she always thinks about Geralt and Ciri. Even though she couldn’t speak it, it’s why she teleported away from Phillipa and the lodge of sorceresses when it was being formed and planned to use Ciri to get an advantage (which she was against)

    I got feeling that this was likely at some point intended to be more than just cinematic sequence, but eventually plot-line for it was gone and no one went back to clean everything up or maybe they just forgot. Since it is easy to not link the two events, due to different location and it not being same animal. Like even if I saw that, I would never make connection due to it. Plus it does feel like someone was more playing with idea than having something solid implemented. Which is likely why it feels like it was one "to be removed" thing in the world they never came back to and remove or at least fix so it makes sense. I mean that is problem in a lot of open world games, since there is so much of everything, it is easy to forget something.

    Perhaps the reasoning for the corpse being a small dog instead of a large wolf is that it could be seen as a metaphor?
    Geralt could be seen as the large wolf outrunning the others to catch the deer/ Yennefer, ignoring the risks and previous failures of their relationship and takes a huge gamble to reach her.
    But in the end, Geralt ends up as the small dog, falling to his death in an attempt to make an impossible jump to reach Yennefer.

    Maybe the wolf chasing the deer is a parallel on what would happen if geralt *didn't* romance yen, in one scene he has clearly caught the "deer" in the other one it failed and ended up dying from bloodlust which could be a play on what geralt is, a monster slayer who looks like he has a bloodlust to anyone who doesn't know him, and when he dies, the strong white wolf turns into nothing but a little dog, which could be a play on what geralt is again to someone who doesn't know him, the white wolf turns out to be a loyal little lap puppy without his master yennefer the deer,
    in this scenario, the little deer runs away and survives if it isnt caught by the wolf, but would be in constant danger to be captured by another wolf which is what would happen to yen without geralt, but perhaps geralt would not be able to survive or be himself without the knowledge of knowing his loved ones are alive? idk im just trying to make this make any sense.

    I think the dog is a reference to Keira's line.. on Fyke Isle she says to Geralt that Yennefer treats him like a dog.

    Now let’s imagine that this was made from cdpr to point in the direction that in the next Witcher game it is mentioned that Geralt died when he wasn’t in his “prime”form anymore
    So he chased after yen so long was finally alone with her and died as a weaker form of himself
    wolf -> a dog

    I wonder… a dog is a tamed/domesticated wolf. And Geralt dies at the end of the books…
    Some symbolism about how falling for Yennifer changes him and in the end gets him killed?

    In somewhere along this quest, when you are drinking, you can discuss if there were any interesting contracts they came across recently, geralt says no, i wonder if that dialogue changes if you do this quest after blood and wine. Maybe you can look this up

    That detail is really surprising. For me there is a happy end for Geralt and Yennefer but I absolutly love the tension and kind of tragedy in their romance as long as it doesn't end up tragic. That's why I think that the Games are a perfect continuation of the books so we have a seemingly tragic ending but then a very deserved happy ending.
    After all I don't think that this detail predict a tragedy or anything bad for Geralt and Yennefer, because at this point it all mostly work out very well for them and there is not really mutch to mess up anymore. And luckily we don't see a bad endig for them. At least not in my way of playing the Witcher which is simply becoming Geralt of Rivia xD. Also I don't see any metaphorical connections between a wolf pack that is hunting a deer and Geralt's and Yen's relationship or love. After all Geralt is notreally the "pack" type and Yen can not be compared to or symbolised with a deer, because they don't have any charakter traits in common and she is already symbolised by a crow.
    I really hope that CDPR watches your videos, it would help then a lot to fix everithing that need to be fixed. As always a great video. 👍

    It looks a lot like the bridge Yen blew up in the chase scene on the way to Vizima and the Wild Hunt riders go diving off of ....... Not sure it is significant but rather just reusing some assets from an earlier cut scene that isn't actually on the game map anywhere either

    It could be that the symbolism is that the bloodlust drove the dog to completely overjudge his abilities, like imagining that of being a wolf, or of there being a bridge to jump over instead of just being a sheer cliff. Maybe something of a story parallel of someone who craves too much or can't let something go

    The bridge in the video is very likely located to the far north in Kaer Morhen - if you travel to the furtest point, approximately in a centreline of the lake you will find it uptop a ridge that is somewhat hard to traverse. I think it can be recognised on the map, but it has no road connected to it.
