Game of the Decade: The Witcher 3

- Is it possible to choose a video game of the decade? There's so many to choose from, and it's impossible to compare games (especially outside genres). Ultimately, I narrowed it down to a few games which I discuss in this video: Dark Souls, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War, and The Witcher 3.
Thanks for sticking with me through this year. I've learned a lot about myself and I've been doing a lot of changing in the last few months in the way I approach making content. There will be more changes and new things happening on this channel very soon, so stay tuned.
Big shout out to all my fans out there! You guys are the best.

Thumbs this video up if you'd like to see an "Indie Game of The Decade video." Likes help me gauge interest for future similiar videos. I could get it out sometime in the next week as I already have the game in mind for it.
Either way, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to watch my content this year. Next year, big changes are coming to Downward Thrust, both in how videos are made and my general attitude towards game critique. Let's just say I'm going to be celebrating more games rather than provoking controversy (whether warranted or not).
Anyway, I've covered The Witcher 3 in-depth, but I could not deny it Game of the Decade. Instead of repeat what I've already said about the game, I decided to bring in other games and topics before going into why The Witcher 3 is the best of them all. Obviously, there is no measurement here: this is personal, yet I think the widespread acclaim for the game speaks for itself.
This is a discussion video, so it's not all about The Witcher 3. Want to skip straight to The Witcher 3 conversation? 3:24

I love that the “padding” in witcher 3 doesn’t feel like padding. Every single side quest feels meaningful and well thought out.
I didnt care for witcher 3 much. didnt even finish the main story. the start of the decade was 2010 technically, the year New Vegas released...not the best graphics, frame rate and and it was buggy but simply the game i felt like playing the most and most memorable story. The DLC in this game are what i wish all DLC would be
Lmao no, did you both forget about Old Hunters? Easily beats every dlc out there.
The NeiR Automata dlc was also pretty good for what it was.
Shivering isles in oblivion was prolly the best dlc I’ve ever played through
@@sherlock7127 I love old hunters but the beast of touissant quest beats 80% of the old hunters dlc and lore. Let's not get into how well they introduced Gaunter O'Dimm in the beginning, telling you about Yen and then disappearing, only for him to be the main antagonist in one of the DLCs. For the most part I dont thibk they're comparable, bloodborne's fighting system is way more refined than the witcher 3, but the witcher 3 focuses more on story than combat, where as old hunters has a very vague story, open for discussion and speculation. Then that leads to youtubers like vaatividya to do huge leaps in logic and sense to glue together some very vague pieces of lore. "Who could Living Failures be? Maybe an old ancestor of Gehrman?" (I think you get my point).
Ludwig, Orphan of Kos, and Maria are all amazing boss fights. Let's forget about the stains that Laurence and Living failures left on an otherwise amazing DLC.
@@sherlock7127 they Don't come close to Blood and Wine. Blood and Wine is not Just an expansion, but whole diffrent game because of how huge it is. Hearts of Stone is far superior in story.
@@genesisosuna the old hunters is better just for the gameplay and the areas. Toussaint is good but do feel generic after about 20 Hours in like every the Witcher 3 regions.
Best DLC history of the decade: Hearts of Stone
Best DLC ever: Blood and Wine.
I love how when it comes to most DLC's for most games, it's a simple expansion pack tht addes a reasonable amount of content for the game. CD Projekt Red? NOPE. We'll give you access to part of the map that's BIGGER than the main game and is equally as good if not better than the main content. Like seriously, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine made me think seriously again about the concept of DLC to begin with.
@@bladelazoe Though not as large as The Witcher 3 DLC, Oblivion did it first imo with its expansions that were relatively cheap and provided a large quantity of entirely new content and no reskins. Not anywhere as good as Blood and Wine, but I think Oblivion was the first to start the trend of good DLC... they also started the trend of shit DLC with HORSE ARMOR for 5 bucks lmao.
@@MrCholoPants3415 Got a point, I'm just saying then between those 2 expansions, there was an awful lot of "here's 100% story, now lets cut about 10% of that and make that into an expansion....or 20% of the main game and cut that into an expansion" vs a full game with actual expansions lol I never played Oblivion but I have a friend who LOVES that series and I heard all about it from him.
Best DLC ever: Old Hunters
That doesn't even make sense
Witcher 3, The Last Of Us and Red Dead Remption 2... All had their own small issues, but all accomplished unforgettable, ambicious and game changing experiences.
No game has ever been perfect..also it's always up to personal preference, but yeah these titles and also other just stand out in their own ways and you just have to love them and you just feel they have something different, something unique
You gotta put Skyrim in there
Monster Hunter World is on my list at #3 simply because it actually managed to bring one of the most beautiful game series to the world without destroying the essence of the game!!!
Martin Smith you gotta remember gta 5 and Skyrim
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt > Skyrim (all 100 remasters) though I did love it.
Witcher 3 would definitely be my game of the decade. Time spent playing the witcher 3 just disappears like a magical dream. I get bored of big open worlds yet when playing the witcher 3 time just disappears.
In just two playthroughs i sunk around 230 hours into the abyss that is witcher 3.
At a time in my life when little interested me, my friend bought me witcher 3 one Christmas. And that Christmas holiday I could not put it down. Time dissolved when playing it. Normally after a couple of days of binging any media i feel burnt out, yet I had finished the game and all the dlc before I even started to think about burnout. Whilst i did not 100% the game on my first playthough i was by no means speedrunning it. For the first time in ages I felt passionate about something and that for me is why i hold it in such high regards.
I spent about 400 hours on my first and only playthrough. I haven't dared replaying yet cause I fear it might take some of the magic away. Witcher 3 felt more like a personal experience I made than a game. And every DLC was just so perfect, from the fantastic story of HoS to the perfect ending with BaW. When you ride back to Corvo Bianco one last time. I knew it was about to end and it just felt so right.
Same here, i love games and such, but get burned out pretty much always, but there are some things, that just resonate with me so much, that dont make me burn out
Something that annoys me is having friends who bought and enjoyed Assasins Creed Odyssey, but refuse to play Witcher 3 because it’s fantasy...
The funny thing about that is that AC Origins and AC Odyssey pretty much saw what was done in Witcher 3 and took notes.
AC games are blatant copy down of witcher 3 with their own mechanics

I still remember when Geralt looked at the camera after Regis said that we needed a well deserved rest. After playing the game for over 200 hours I remembered all "we" went through and I got shivers while watching the credits. I think this is the game of the decade since 2015, its an rpg of legendary proportions...
Painkiller DCXVI That fourth wall breaking , with geralt smiling was the best thing

I hope you saw their anniversary video too, was very touching having invested so much time into all the characters
Adam Swaney that anniversary video hit the feels so hard dude, just like you said after all that time with those characters it really hit hard

And I chose the Gwent game of the Decade
In-game game of the decade
Jokes aside the standalone gwent game is one of my favourite this decade
Ragnar really enjoyed the beta much much more but eh it’s still good
@D Wise So, uh . . . wanna play some cards?
Gwent IS the game, all the swordfighting and stuff is just a distraction on your way to play more Gwent.
Here's i think why it's the best game of the decade:
1. The music and soundtrack😍
2. The map, the scenery this game offers. Especially at Toussaint.
3. The effort they put to each character/dialogue.
4. The impact this game made me feel. It made me laugh, frustrated, and cry.
The music and soundtrack of blooborne is better. The. Literally everything you said after that red dead redemption 2 does better. But still and AMAZING game nonetheless

Ive had 200 hours of game time on The Witcher 3. I think the combat is still decent, but the story, the music, the graphics and the ambience/feel of the game make me want to tear up. It's so beautiful.
I must be one of few in the camp that actually liked the Witcher 3's combat system and controls. Honestly, really enjoyed it. I liked how you could make your character very mage heavy, sword heavy, or potion heavy, or how you could mix and hybrid the styles. I thought the styles mixed well with the controls. It was easy to use magic in combat, or potions too. And of all the RPG openworld games I have played, and I have played many, Witcher 3 is the only game where I actually used potions and oils to buff my stats to help me kill a certain monster or enemy. Witcher 3 and with its DLCs are honestly a 10/10 for me. A masterpiece.
You are not the only one. The combat is satisfying once you get into it, challenging and rewarding if you plan a strategy.
This nitpicking is just overreacting. The only real problem with TW3 is fistfighting in narrow places (e.g. at the gwent tournament in Novigrad), whereas there's always room to improve in other matters. The game is an absolut masterpiece.
I think the Soulsborne games may have spoiled us. The combat in them is just SO GOOD, the controls are so responsive, and the weapons are just so varied and impactful that really nothing is able to rival them. Which kind of puts other games in a conundrum. They can either try to copy what FROM did, in which case they'll all just feel samey and derivative, which won't do the industry any good, or they can make their own combat system, in which case they'll run the real risk of making something that feels inferior to Soulsborne. That's kind of what happened with The Witcher 3. It came out only a couple months after Bloodborne with a combat system that tried to have its own feel and which took a lot of inspiration from the Batman Arkham series, and it just wasn't as satisfying to play.
most people are saying the combat is trash because it's not primarily mechanically orientated, but instead, based on your builds and preparations. While i prefer dark souls combat over witcher 3, I still admire its combat considering how i have to put some thought before entering each fight. The ones who dislike it are also probably the ones who chose the lower 2 difficulties, because they don't require any levels of preparation, but moreso hack and slash. Thus they completely complain on how its combat isn't up to match with dark souls, yet they miss out on the best part of witcher 3's combat, that being how you must know your enemy, or die.
Whoever thinks the combat ia trash, do one thing. Download the Witcher 3 Ehanced Edition from Nexus Mods. It remasters the combat and enemy AI behavior. Check out videos of it on CZcams... Its super cool. It's so much harder, but when you master it, you really feel like a Witcher. Also it makes cooking potions so much fun, you will spend more time actually harvesting ingredients from plants and monsters.
@@alosnocallereal1734 i agree fist fighting was had some weird cut of edges especially inside but i loved the combat i dont know if it just me but geralt fights very much like this in the books.

Truly a Masterpiece , My GOTD too .
CDPR needs to remake 1&2 in the same engine as 3. It's money, lots of it and they have the people capable of doing so!
Not really worth their time tbh. They usually polish a game very well so it'll take them a long time to do it plus less people will buy it compared to making a new game. Keep in mind, i said less as in compared to newer games not generally few amount of people will buy it. I hear that they're going for another witcher game after cyberpunk.
Emilian Not worth it. The amount of time it would take is not worth the sales it MIGHT get. I personally wouldn’t rush to buy 1 and 2, having completed 3. I’d rather have a sequel and not dwell on the past.

@@kevinytb1372 ??? witcher 3 feels nothing like nioh. Nioh is 1000000x more responsive and polished in their controls
@bronx zoo sorry bro but when i played nioh it kind a feel awkward maybe because i played ac origins before that for me ac origins have crispier movements than nioh tho i mean i can definitely dodge in nioh but i probably need to do it in advance like i saw the enemy lifting it sword ready to attack thats like the time youd press dodge not like when its about to hit you then you press dodge you instantly dodge that thing i do that in ac origins same with parry i really love the movements and the slowmos i get when that happens
@@kevinytb1372 You telling me that ac origins has crisp movement is enough to know that you're a casual gamer. LIterally all the mechanics you described in ac origins make the game worse, because they're all designed to make the game piss easy.
@bronx zoo yeah ive been a casual gamer since i was a kid. (Im more of a mmorpg guy) im just gunna say it. all the "hard" games have that delayed thing in their movements trust me when i first tried nioh all i could say is the camera view sucked in a small room but hey thats what makes it challenging for most peeps out there i know ur some sort of a fan of these "hard" games im just all about the story and changes the settings in ultra hard mode for fun. But trust me thats 1 thing i noticed about "those" hard games yes its true ac origins is easy cant argue with that but the point is the movements is crispy when you press dodge it dodges as soon as you press the button and thats why its easy unlike those "hard" games it has some sort of delay and makes you wanna press it in advance so you wont get caught up on whats coming for you.

A fair warning. First: the game is highly addictive once it really gets going. The beginning is a bit sluggish but trust me, most of the 100+ hours is quality content. Secondly, the game is like the tv show in a way that it doesn't really explain any of the lore that much to you, or the characters you might meet. While Witcher 3 definitely stands on its own, it is a piece of a trilogy in the end. Oh and in case you didn't know already, the games are set AFTER the book series ends and the tv show is based on the book series. So expect to be somewhat spoiled for the books and when the tv show resumes.

This game changed my life i would say. After spending almost 1000 hours with Geralt since witcher 1 my character developed too. Even some of my habits have changed. And i would never thought i’m gonna be listening to a song in a cutscene of a game for 3-4 minutes straight and start clapping and crying when it’s done. Witcher 3 especially was a magnificent game with perfect characters and presentation. It’s cast of voice actors top notch and it’s story is well thought. Unlike some other games and developers cdpr and witcher 3 is full of content with a reasonable price. Offers replayability and joy. Bought 3 games in a summer sale for 5 bucks. For 5 bucks i had about 1000 hours of immense emotions and fun. I cannot compare this kind of price to performance with anything. I’m finally going through the game on Nintendo Switch and I am currently engrossed in everything Witcher 3. One quest that stood out to me because of the dialogue and the twist halfway through was the quest line with Fyke Island and Keira Wentz. I cleared the island for Keira and was expecting some run of the mill reward and be sent on my way but the quest threw me for a loop at the end and I won’t spoil it for people but the amount of choices you have to complete this quest was amazing to me . I also found later on after some reading that there was an option to end the quest line prematurely if the correct dialogue was selected . It made me think about all the previous quests that I had done and what I could have done differently or said differently. Sometimes choosing the correct dialogue can be the difference between life and death for a side character. I’m excited for the rest of the game and know I’ll be putting in 100+ hours .
