Pretending politely;
Your movements were subtle
And gestures were knightly.
Advancing a trifle
Whilst gamboling lightly,
You unscrewed the pommel
And ended it rightly.

have you ever considered that guns are so great in fights because in a sense they're firing tiny pommels at you?
Where the lie?
And thus, the pommel is now the apex of common offensive tools. Whodathunk.
Lmao
Now that’s “end him quickly”
Oh my god... this is a coded hand wave of a time traveler! He was talking about guns all along!
"then, you drop your bow and throw your quiver at the enemies."

Pommels are deadliest then a quiver
Also...
Drop your dart and throw the atlatl at the enemies as a throwing stick

Dude I almost choked on my breakfast lmao
If you throw the pommel weakly, are you then ending him slightly?

If you throw a candle at him, are you ending him lightly?
If you throw the pommel from a high place, are you ending him heightly?
If you end him under the cover of dark, are you ending him nightly?
Take pommel, throw at enemy.
Take spear, throw at enemy.
Take buckler, throw at enemy.
They just want to play dodgeball basically.
You can dodge a pommel you can dodge a ball!
Take off helmet, throw it
Take off armour, throw it
Take off codpiece, throw it
Im gonna bet at this point your enemy is just going to walk away

Yes the game of dodgepommel was indeed the king of medieval entertainment...that and the odd beheading...however that was usually the half time show during matches...
Bet if he dropped his pants and swung his hips a few times, all the while shouting at the top of his lungs "YOU SHALL BE ENDED RIGHTLY!" the duel would end much more swiftly. 😂😂😂
I can confirm that it could not have been a joke.
Humor has not been discovered in Germany before the year 2001
Roy Kullick Wow, I didn't think they had even discovered it yet
It could be argued that they still haven't found humor.
They found humor soon enough to have many-a-timely Berlin Wall jokes.
Looks like I just ended your statement Rightly.

Modern warfare is buildt upon this technique, Pommels lost their blades and hilts and got smaller and are nowadays launched by gunpower through metal tubes for better accuracy.
So many whas been ended rightly as a consequence.
I don't speak medieval German (just modern German), but "rechtlich" does in fact mean "legally OK" OR "properly". So "rightly" is a pretty good translation.
JoergSprave please tell me you are making the spring loaded pommel you posted on Facebook!!! That would be such an amazing video. If you make it rubber powered you would be:
Rubbing them out rightly
Ok I am ashamed of that joke.
It's actually "reschtlich", so it seems related to the word "rasch".
In large parts of Southern Germany, the "ch" still is pronounced "sch" (like the English "sh", as in "she"). If someone from, say, Stuttgart, would speak the word "rechtlich", it would sound 100% like "reschtlich". The "Duden" says that "rasch" was actually "rasch" in middle high German as well, so it did not change. "Rechtlich" is actually derived from the middle high German "rehtlich", whereas "resch" is the middle high German term for "crispy, crunchy" and still has that meaning in Bavaria and Austria today. My personal opinion, based on this whole picture: "Rightly" was the correct translation.
Justiciously? In Dutch it would probably translate to "rechtelijk".
Skallagrim Actually it's "reschlich", no "t". 01:09 And that means Skal is right. It means quickly. Since "resch", even nowadays, means "in a hurry".
Well, since the original edit of the video wasn't as clear as I intended... I was *not* telling anyone to stop making jokes. I do in fact encourage you to make *good jokes*, i.e. put some thought and creativity into it. Humor is good, lazy regurgitation not so much. Either way, I'm not the kind of arrogant bastard who tries to dictate what people may or may not say. :)
And to prove it I cut out the part where I rant about unoriginal meme spamming, which apparently came off as arrogant. I still prefer quality over quantity and this is not an apology or anything like that, but it's my way of showing that I do actually respect my viewers and have no intention of trying to dictate what is acceptable in the comments. Well, except bad cases of bullying, I have zero tolerance for that.
Skallagrim Couldn't agree more.
Skallagrim You are just making the problem worse.
Skallagrim wow a comment from a Skallagrim...... seems like its still fresh (hunting etc.)
tom possessed actually that was MY intension....
i really don´t think this technique is a joke, just look at the Pommel Throw in the helmet test, it would certainly disorientate the opponent leaving enough time to finish them of with a strike.
I would bet some medieval badass duelist pulled this in a duel once and made it work, it shocked everyone and spawned a little bit of a duel meta for a short time. The same kind of thing happens in esports today; some player does something stupid but it works, so all the players try to do it, like Simple's double noscope from heaven on Cache.
Azure Flash mayhaps
@Hollow Shell Makes sense to me. It happens more in pro gaming than in fighting. Good analogy.
Azure Flash stupid things can work in professional settings because the pros are prepared for the viable tactics but they don’t practice against stupidity meaning you can win with it occasionally.
@Hollow Shell Eh, write what you know. I'd understand an analogy to modern video-game meta than to modern combat sports meta.
Id dare to say that that is exactly what happened, someone unscrewed their pommel and threw it at someone, then fucked him up while he was distracted and everyone found it so entertaining that it made its way into a manuscript, even though its a pretty shit technique it is actually possible to work especially with how many duels happened back then.
When they invented gunpowder, the field of battle was forever changed by pommel grenades.
Then Erwin Pommel came with cars armored by folded pommels, shooting pommels.
Pomegranates contain small edible pommels.
The first thing I pictured was pressing a button on the handle and then a loud bang followed by the pommel flying off as a projectile.
What's that? Keep the meme going till the heat death of the universe?
YOU GOT IT BOSS.
Or Big Freeze. :)

If your sword is completely shattered, or your good arm broken... unscrew the prommel and place it in a sock. It is now the deadliest of all weapons.

I hear wearing socks with your armor was considered bad fashion that century
It would just incinerate the sock.
@@erics6894 obviously for balance reasons
Medieval superheroes have socks on top of their armor.
I'd been considering - if judicial fights were ever fought to first unblocked weapon strike, then the pommel through could really "end him quickly" since the pommel, unlike a rock on the ground, would technically be a part of your weapon. Without a helmet, a pommel to the nose could easily result in first blood as well.
Excellent idea! It would be "rule-mastery" but it would work on the technicality. Such events were often about "satisfying honor" rather than actually proving combat superiority. It would be a good way out for everyone.
Finally some valid discussion! Took 3 pages to get down here. It's a shame only 2 people will see this.
Velinion Legit but too complex.
I eat ass
Interesting idea. I always thought that unscrewing the pommel mid-fight seemed silly, like Skall and most people pointed out, even with the shorter thread. However with this end him quickly reveal, maybe it had meant if you had wanted to end the fight as soon as it began you would throw your pommel. Already have it unscrewed most of the way by the time the duel starts, then a simple turn and you're good to go.

Memes never die, they just get danker and danker
_What is dank will never die._
Oh they die alright. And 9gag is where they go to do it.
Arphemius normie
Aldor memes die when Behind The Meme makes a video about them. Very few memes have survived him.
The thing is that Skall (channel, person and community) is not mainstream enough to be normie but is big enough to stay relevant, putting the meme into a perfect status quo allowing its existence.
Personally, I can see how throwing a solid metal object at someone during a fight could be just enough of a distraction that it could get you killed.
Maybe because memes had to travel by road they had a longer life span back in the middle ages? Thus explaining the approximate 10 year time span for it to appear again
5:19,
"bruh you thicc, you lift?"

I've seen "pommel to end him rightly" references on channels as far away / apparently off-topic as "PBS Space Time." I encourage this behavior. It is time to take this reference to all corners of the interwebs, to spread the words of The Prophet Skallagrim, and our appreciation for devious ideas and unexpected events.
Let the rally cry be "Fair Warning for Unfair Tactics!" or maybe "Nature is a Harsh Mistress!"
He doesn't discourage it: he just said his sense of humor is less of the type of memes like end him rightly where you can just spam it, but more so jokes that take a bit more thought. But it's still fine in his book.
don't say "interwebs", you fucking ninny
to some "god": It's a way of giving a context clue that the person is adding a twist of faked fanaticism, essential humility, or irony to their statement, a kind of theatrical affectation.
If you were really omniscient, you would know that already. This is why people don't believe in you like they used to. Your lack of humor and meaningless aggression show your inferior character. We'll take it from here.
Spotted one in a video on Literary critique as well.

Gin Chan i don't think it's used enough

Imma gonna end my life rightly
That intro is such a cool move, I keep replaying it. It just flows so well
I think Skall may have actually just unearthed a meme from the Medieval period.
Something that I noticed was that in the pommel throw test you did, the pommel was midair as the sword strike began to come in. It was a bit hard to notice, which would be magnified if wearing a visor, so perhaps the main point is to catch the opponent completely off guard. They are ready to block your swing, but then they get hit in the head. This would allow you to more easily bypass their block, or take another swing.
tl;dr
The real power of the pommel throw is that you don't realize he threw his pommel until it hits you.
I can actually see the pummel having the ability to 'blind' the opponent if it manages to catch a point on the helm that causes it to turn and misalign with the opponent's view.
I'm shocked by the number of people are upset by him not finding literally the same joke on every video for years funny.
Mason G and I'd be shocked by you being shocked but I'm honestly not, as should you, not be shocked that is.
It's like that with most memes i think, i don't find most of them funny at all. Maybe i have a weird sense of humor.
I see everyone complaining about this but when I take a look at the comments there's way more people whining about people whining about Skallagrim not finding the joke funny.
The first day it was uploaded it was 90% complaints about the video with 50+ thumbs up
I just got here, literally just found out about the meme two days ago.
I've never clicked on a more rightly video than this one.
So pommels are medieval stun grenades.
Is that your critical animation if you were in Fire Emblem, Skall?
Honestly I thought this was the last place I'd find you 😂
So it would be both right and quick to end this damn joke? I'm ok with that
If someone made the pommel much more deadly against opponents, then either the person took it literally, or decided to make a *KILLING JOKE.*
Think I heard Joker jizz for a second there.
Good joke, take my upvote.
We will probably never know the actual truth about if this is meant as a real fighting tactic or not, unless we can somehow go back in time and ask the man who wrote the manual and find out that way.
I think it was meant as legit. People were a lot stupider and more gullible back then... Many still are. >__>
This is a very straightforward comment.
I would not be surprised if it were a "legit" move.... Just, you know, a dirty move.
Maybe the manual who writen the manual is actually a guy from the future that read the manual and travels back in time to write it

In this context I can see this being effective. In this case the first seconds of the first move are so important. If you can bang their helmet a second before you are in striking range that is enough for the advantage. The sound and shock would blur their vision long enough for you to quickly change your strike. They are still in position to guard the feinted strike you broadcasted before you threw your pommel.
Man, Skallagrim knows how to end a meme rightly...
Psst, hey, it's a guy from the future, it didn't work.

Well, I mean, if somebody were to throw something at you, you'd automatically focus your sight on it, which would give your enemy a chance to attack. Even if the pommel were to miss it's target, it'd still fulfill it's role as a "decoy" of some sort. That's what I think, at least.

That last pommel throw at 10:28 would actually make more sense if you went for an underswing, you threw it at the head, the "enemy" would raise the shield (if applicable) to deflect and you swing in from under.
