  • When looking at historical armor designs, even though the majority is purposeful and well suited to its function, sometimes you'll expeirence bizarre "what where they thinking" moments. So in this video I'm showing a few particularly unappealing and even outright hideous examples, at least in my personal opinion.
    Taste is highly subjective, so don't be too offended if yours is different. :)

    Just to clarify the Italo-Corinthian helmet: It was not worn over the face, it was designed to look like a Corinthian helmet that was lifted up for better vision and breathing, as is often shown in Greek imagery. So the eye holes were just decorative. Either way they still look silly to me, compared to Greek Corinthian helmets.

    The dragonfly Samurai helmet makes sense when you look at it with cultural context. In the feudal Japanese culture dragonflies were symbols of courage and swiftness, fearless hunters that always caught their prey. Dragonflies are so emblematic to Japan that the country has sometimes been called Akutsushima, or the Dragonfly Island.

      It's funny. I also had this thought about dragonflies, that they are badass and vicious hunters and it's weird how they are overlooked in heraldry and other places where you usually find falcons, eagles, lions etc. If I were a knight or a king of an aggressive kingdom, definitely would put them somewhere. It's interesting to know that in Japan they too have acknowledged that.

    The helmet of Henry the VIII actually was a gift to Henry from Maximilian the I (the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire). The facial features of this helmet is actually the facial features of Maximilian himself. The idea was, that Henry knew about the contest armour design made by Maximilian's blacksmith shop (that design nowadays called Maximilian armour by the way). This particular design was very popular at that time. And at some point Henry decided, that he want to make his own armour design and his own royal blacksmith shop. And, actually he did. Because of that Maximilian made this gift, that looks like him. To help young Henry become like Maximilian himself. About the horns... Well, hell if I know why Maximilian thought it was a good idea.

    Interestingly the Roman Secutor gladiator helmet was intentionally made to limit vision. Gladiators armor and weapons were specifically made to limit and handicap gladiators in certain ways. Secutors would often go up against trident wielding gladiators and the small eyeholes would protect the face but limit the vision. Gladiators with large shields had small swords and gladiators with small shields had large swords. Gladiators with ranged were often put up against gladiators with close distance weapons. A lot of that was made to balance the two against eachother and make the fight more entertaining.

    • @CuriousKey
      @CuriousKey Před 6 lety +1

      I agree Wampam. The reason jousting lances splintered is because of the sheer force of the strikes. Conduct a test: Find a piece of good seasoned timber (no broomhandles, those things are trash) and smack it against a wall or something until (more likely if) you can break it. Watch as it fails to impress with any real splinters.

    There are surviving examples of the morrion that are too over the top with exaggerated features (pointy tips, oversized comb, like the swiss guard) but the helmet for the regular soldier was much more discreet and very practical. Later on some helmets that were not meant for footsoldiers took some of the features and kept making them more pronounced, turned the small reinforcing ridge into a crest, some added plumes, kept turning the pointy ends upwards and made the helmets turn from a very practical design into something ridiculous. But the common soldier design was originally something very practical, comfortable, well thought and aesthetically fitting.

    Some Notes to the Helmet seen at 10:55.
    The Helmet is currently on display at the "Zeughaus" at my Hometown Graz in Austria and dates back to 1601.
    They were at war with the Ottomans at that time and didn't have enough Armor and Helmets to take back an important Castle in Hungary at the Styrian border.
    So in a Haste, a Blacksmith manufactured some Helmets wrong, cutting out the Eyeholes too high and had to correct them while they were besieging the Castle. It's one of the so-called "Kanischarüstungen" or Kanischa Armor because of the Castle Kanischa they were besieging. Those Armors are all a bit crude made, you can really see that the Smith was in a Hurry.

    • @MadnerKami
      @MadnerKami Před 6 lety +3

      Yup, pretty much this. This particular type of helmet developed from the habit of troops, to "dismount" the helmet from the face and leave it still on the head, a way of carrying the corinthian helmet often displayed on pottery or coints (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinthian_helmet#/media/File:MetapontumDrachmRutter1576Obverse.jpg) and also a way of carrying that helmet during inactive parts of a battle in an attempt to ventilate, get better oversight of the situation and breath more easily. The smiths reacted to this habit by, first, closing up the gaps between the nasal and cheek plates, which lead to that style of carrying the helmet becoming safer in battle, thus it was worn regularly in this way and, over time, the eyeslits closed up increasingly. This vestigial "face" took a while to "evolve" away.

    5:05 Here's a crazy story...
    At one time in Japan's pretty extensive history of war, the popular way for a Samurai to impress the daimyo who he fought for, and to prove his ruthlessness as a warrior, was to collect the heads of the opposing soldiers he killed as trophies.
    As you can imagine, the recently decapitated head of a samurai, hair soaked in the overwhelming irony smell of blood, and the funk of sweating, probably pretty profusely, inside that^ helmet, would probably make for one hell of an odious smelling trophy-especially if it had been possibly lying dead on a battleground, baking in the sun for a while before the Samurai could come back to separate and retrieve the head... But anyway, this head collecting thing was very much commonplace.
    Now, with that important bit if history out of the way, there was this one particularly badass Samurai named Shigenari. He fought in the the siege on Osaka when he was 22 years old, and he knew he was going to die in that battle (he totally did.) Knowing he was going to die (brutally, in melee combat,) he decided to burn incense inside his helmet before wearing it into battle, that way when he was defeated and his head was taken as a war trophy it would smell nice and sweet, so as not to be a noxious burden on the nose of his killer...
    Incredible, unbelievable fortitude.
    And at just 22 years old, no less.
    The story is so famous that it often gets accredited to "samurais", like it was a common occurrence, but it really wasn't. Historians know it definitely happened, but they really only cite one or two occurrences.

      It's possible that this was done my a smith between two battles ( helmet damaged beyond repair, make something fast). Also if the wearer is mounted then the flaps on the bottom would protect the eyes from thrusts coming up.

      This helmet was made for Henry VIII, commissioned by Emperor Maximilian, I've seen it in the flesh myself in Leeds Royal Armoury in the UK.

    • @nathanfagan9881
      @nathanfagan9881 Před 6 lety +2

      Absolutely, not a practical device at all and entirely for showing off at court.

    • @rodrigogascagomez5190
      @rodrigogascagomez5190 Před 6 lety +3

      nathan fagan most of the strange or very ornate weapons and armor out there is just for showing off at parades, banquets, coronations and other ceremonies, and all that. Even in the late XIX century, sabers in portraits of royalty or generals are much more ornate than what was used in the field. My uncle owns the sabre of an ancestor that fought in the Spanish army in Cuba and the Philippines in the 1890s and it's as plain and practical as it can be.

    The pufferfish helmets are pretty easy to make. You completely clean out the pufferfish, put the skin around a coconut, let it dry, cut a hole for the face, done. They sell them as tourist junk in some places, not the original ones, but they're easy to make.
