John Deere E100 First Oil Change and Secret Upgrade?!

- Well, its now overdue for its first service (dump and fill) and I should actually grease it again one of these days too. Yes, I have a family member that works for Case IH. If Case still sold lawn tractors I would have bought one. That being said I really like the look of John Deere's. Can't beat green and yellow! Also I apologize for stooping to click-bait... but I definitely appreciate your view!
Every comment helps the channel, so I certainly appreciate the feedback good or bad. That being said, a fram oil filter isn't going to kill this lawnmower engine. Its essentially just a lawnmower that you can ride that has John Deere stickers on it. You will never get all the old engine oil out during an oil change unless you are completely flushing the entire system with new oil. When I was researching different ride on lawn mower models I called my local John Deere dealership and they didn't seem too overly thrilled that John Deere even offers these small mowers and they just recommended I go to a big box store and buy it there. That was pretty surprising for me, but it gave me the impression they didn't really care to have time for small lawn "tractors". This video is meant to be half instructional and the rest a big joke for entertainment. Of course I had to google the exact oil spec, and I would never finish the oil change without the correct oil level. I'm using the correct weight and type of oil, this mower has had 3 services since filming this video and its running just fine. There are many brands of oil and oil filters and John Deere is not the only option out there. Going slightly over the service interval is not recommended but its also not going to kill the engine if it happens once in a while. Modern oils don't break down as soon as they used to, and sometimes life gets real busy on a guy. Its easy to get polarized over a brand and loyalty to a brand, but just remember folks, its just a fancy lawnmower, and its just CZcams, its just entertainment. I do try to read and respond to every comment I get. If you want to teach me something i'm all ears, just keep it positive :) A service on a tiny machine like this is simple, its not an aircraft and it doesn't need to be overcomplicated. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower czcams.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
Mercy!!! I’m a 71 old farm girl and don’t know how I found you.
Seriously you need to put a warning ⛔️ for us older gals because we need to be prepared for all of the HYSTERICAL LAUGHING
You made my day week maybe month

Haha glad you get my humour :)
I loved the way you shook the old filter a few times to get the old oil out. then dropped it in the bucket . ha.
Whoops! Sadly I’m more dropped oil filters than I’d like lately haha
I made a magnet sticker for mine. I invented a generic GPS tracking company logo and put “warning-GPS tracked 24/7” anti theft systems. So far it’s worked 100% flawlessly as my JD hasn’t been stolen even once.
A complete oil change kit for my E140 from John Deere is around $40. It includes two quarts of oil, two spark plugs (pre gapped), oil filter, air filter and gas filter. Seems like a good cheap deal to me.
Now that is a heck of a deal! Sign me up. Is that in Canada dollars or USA?
@@Darren1767 Well......which is it.....?
3 months,no answer.......gee, ya think he just wants more clicks.?.......
not everyone has youtube reply notifications on, and why would a random youtuber want "more clicks". he doesn't get any money from claiming he gets a cheap deal on oil changes bro. lay off the stock in tin foil hats. @@revolution51
Problem is that the spark plugs do not need to be changed every oil change and you're wasting money by buying a oil change kit. It costs less than $18 for a new filter and quality oil. Spark plugs last many years. I have not put new plugs in my D130 since I bought it 10 years ago. Starts right up and runs fine. My previous lawn tractor lasted 17 years with the original plugs. These newer ignition systems are much better than in the past.
Well, that sounds like a great idea! Buying the cheapest oil and filter saves you 25$ a year and you can be sure that the cheap filter actually filters and the cheapest oil is lubricating exactly the way it should.
A risk worth taking when a full John Deere OEM service kit cost 49$ and a full OEM Brigs kit cost 40$.
Fine risk management young man!
Thanks :)
I have a 7 year old D105 and have changed the oil many times so I'm not sure why I watched this. I'm glad I did! This was hilarious. Heck....I think I'll go change it again. Thanks ✌
I do the same thing when I’m bored and rewatch stuff just for fun.
This is definitely for a novice who has no experience in maintaining his equipment. I was bored so I watched it
Your trying to save a few dollars buying a cheep oil and filter, engines are very expensive good oil filters are cheap in comparison.
Good video! I don't think most people appreciate your since of humor, but I laughed throughout the video!
I do ok with the folks around me or at work haha. I posted this in a John Deere “garden tractor” group on Facebook. Whole lotta angry folks in there but it was still entertaining. I think John Deere’s are cool but garden tractor or lawn mower it’s still just a fancy lawn mower. People take themselves too seriously 😂🤙🏼
@@Darren1767 man after my own heart with that sarcasm.. love it..
Anyone feeling the need to express recreational outrage would’ve wasted the that 9:43 on something far less valuable. The Fram oil filter is much more affordable than the $15 John Deere filter. Also wondering if anyone has an opinion about Amazon kits for these mowers that comes with an oil filter, air filter, fuel filter & spark plugs. For the v-twin 22hp LA 135 it’s $16 on Amazon (obviously Chinese parts) vs $60-$70 for JD parts at Home Depot.
Brilliant!!! Lol

The rooster was the best part of the video
Dude, you are the king of sarcasm. Good job.
I musta been having a good day. Thought it would be decent to actually show people the right way to do it with a bit of humour.
Most sarcasm per minute ever in an instructional CZcams video. Love it!
Typical ordinary guy self taught.. if it blows up, might need a new battery rite!!

Hey, really like the rooster in the background. I’m used to roosters waking me up in the morning.
Find a scrap piece of sheet metal and make yourself a guard that will guide the oil away from the frame when changing the filter.
When I filmed this video I was in such a rush, that is a smart idea. I have a lot more free time now compared to a few years ago :)
I took off my ez oil filter adapter and install a kit from John Deere so I can use a regular oil ilter. Those ez off oil filters are $47.00 now up from $39.00.
Nice, I would have done the same thing!
$55 here in Middle Tennessee, I wouldn't have that piece of crap.
Informative and hilarious!
Interesting and very amusing! Love all your quips - I'm sure we would be very good friends.
Rap flexible magnet strips around the oil filter for added protection. It catches all the reality big metal shavings that can cut through the filter medium making the filter useless
I use clean oil to lubricate my filter gasket.
You can if you want to. It really doesn’t matter and just adds another step for you. All you are doing is lubricating the o ring. You shouldn’t be getting it soaked in oil. You will never get all the old engine oil out of any engine when you do an oil change. There will always be old oil left in the engine to a certain extent. People definitely have their opinions on using new oil only to lubricate the o ring but I have literally done thousands of oil changes and I can’t see how it makes a difference. Unless your oil is so heavily contaminated with metal flakes or fuel i can’t see it mattering at all.
Love the roster in tha back ground i think he was laughing too😂
Hopefully ;)
International Harvester used to make the Cub Cadet. No more,
My John Deere SB14 self propelled mower is 28 years old and doesn’t burn oil. John Deere filters and Amsoil
Suggestion: use a sharpie to record the date and hours on your oil filter.
I am on my second JD mower. The first one was 15 years old when I bought it at a garage sale and I used it for 9 years where I left it with the house when I sold it. JD #2 is now a 19 year old unit that I bought as a end of summer season repo that had 40 hours on it. Plugs every other year and new air filter, oil filter, and oil every spring. I don't put enough hours on it in a years time for the recommended maintenance cycle. I have two sets of blades and change out the sharpened and balanced blades at the oil change and lube. Replace the belt with a JD brand belt or you will get to do it again soon if you use an aftermarket belt.
Thanks for the tips there. I’ll definitely replace the belt with a jd belt like you said. I still have to sharpen or replace my blades. At my last property I was a little hard on this machine and I did some brush hogging with it so I wouldn’t be surprised if the blades are a little chipped up. I have just been ignoring the hour meter and changing the oil at the beginning of the season. It only takes me around half an hour to mow almost an acre of lawn so I don’t get a ton of hours. The summers here get very dry and you don’t have to mow for about 2 months sometimes.
Case IH sticker was the best part. FARMALL for life.
Hasn’t let me down yet
I bursted out laughing when you said to pour it on windy day. That cracked me!
Obviously o would never recommend pouring oil on your driveway ;)
Great video! i buy my oil filters online and two at a time (cheaper price and free shipping). i always keep a extra quart of oil on hand just in case. :)
Well done! A Wal Mart Super Tech ST3614 oil filter fits & works---it is a bit taller, but easier to remove with a filter cap wrench--cost was $3.00.
Fram 3614 in any 3 tiers also fit, will need little bit extra oil
You beat me to it.
00:41 I had to eat a whole tub to do this 🤣👆
Took one for the team there I suppose… ;)
OMG, I want to do this, but I'm not good at reading sarcasm, sooo... Thanks, and I'll just to be safe check another video. I've never done this and too nervous to get the jokes. I'll return and enjoy the jokes. Sad enough I realized you were joking only when you said, do the oil change on a windy day.... LoL, then I knew.. But, I insist I'll learn to service my mower myself. Thank you.
Whatever works for you :)

Haha thanks man, I hope you enjoy it! I took mine out for a pre-spring drive to the back of the property and had a coffee and watched the dogs run around. I kind of abuse mine a bit and brush hog small diameter stuff with it. Maybe one day I’ll treat it to new blades but to me it’s just a tool. It gets the job done around here :)

Great sense of humor!!!
Great video and awesome sarcasm 👍👍👍
Great video! We are all different in how we go about maintaining. I paid $2100 for my booger green tractor… I don’t mind spending an extra $3.20 on the designed filter. Nothing wrong with Fram but I trust JDs isn’t going to flake apart inside due to excessive heat. Also, every single filter on a new tractor is over tightened to stupid levels. I used a C clamp busting a hole it it to get the piece of shit off. JD has no good reason for that over tighten… I think they figure if one in a 100 give up and call the dealer, it’s basically an easy way to get some $100 an hour labor or some shit. Another thing I found is just buy the green plastic watering can at the dollar tree and use that as a pan… the height is perfect and the spout just by random chance rests snug on the port. Then after you empty the new oil, pour the oil in the water can in the empty jugs and throw them in the neighbors garbage. Another thing I do is stand on the side of the tractor when the oil is done flowing to get that last bit out. …. Then pour a little clean oil in to rinse down any metal fragments that are heavy at the bottom.
Funny eh. I guess a hot oil flush would work well. Again though, mower is 3 years old now and it’s running fine. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed shavings in oil. Oil always comes out looking decent. There are a few filter brands I would never use but I worked on cars for a living for around 4 years and I changed a lot of oil when I was doing that. I think fram is fine. I used to use the factory brand filters on my vehicles, I used fram, napa etc. never noticed a difference. The only time I especially go for the factory brand now is on our Toyota hybrid. I’m not gonna cheap out on a $46,000 SUV.
@@Darren1767 I’m with you there. I went way too long to my first change… I think I’m at 70 hours…. The oil was really clean. It was still hard to see on the dip stick. I owned a crapsman before the JD and it’s been night and day. The JD is hands down built so much better. I’m a bit obsessive and clean the deck and everything real well after each cut ( being in FL, the grass will rot a deck so fast it’s crazy) . I just hit all the grease points and got new blades for the hell of it. I swapped the headlight bulbs out for multicolored LED for no good reason too ( grandson thinks it’s cool as hell… when on the green setting it looks fun). The only issue I’ve had was because I let the idiot neighbor use it. That s100 just isn’t made for long heavy grass. I heard him stalling it out but just cringed and let him finish his lawn. Next time I went to use it the belt snapped. I know he stretched that shit. Oh, and one of the deck pins and washer popped off and I was running it for a good 50 yards before I looked back and noticed the deck was digging into the ground on the right side. It looked like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s hair all slanted. I was surprised I didn’t hear it even notice right away the deck was dragging on one side.
Hey, you do things just like me, except I have 35 hours on mine and haven't changed the oil. I guess I'll do that this spring.
Very much enjoyed the humor haha!
😂😂😂😂 I could watch this everyday and laugh but you did do everything correctly 👍🏾
Haha thanks. I dunno if it was dry humour? Canadian satire? I always double check parts compatability and oil weight/type etc. ya I totally cheaped out and went with Canadian tires house brand oil and a dirty orange filter but that lawn mower runs like a top and I would never purposely harm my equipment or vehicles. Too costly haha
Just bought S130, coming this week. Going to miss my old 1974 Cub Cadet 169. No oil filter, Splash Lube. Still runs great, just tired of the little things and the rough ride. But what a beast. Never change transmission oil either. But I think this lightweight easier riding always starting, safer for my kids piece of plastic crap will do for the next few years. Lol. I'll probably stick with just the John Deere filter and oil.. And pay the extra what ten bucks once a year. So no excuse when and if this thing has issues.
And yes, I will be getting rid of that piece of crap quick oil system that's $40 just for the filter and a third bottle or something of oil
Mine runs fine on Canadian tire oil and fram. If anything I think the plastic axle housing is junk but you should be in the clear with a 130. Good buy. I’m still happy with mine otherwise!! Mows the lawn and it’s comfortable enough.
John Deere will put their name on anything nowadays!
I appreciate the Canadian (?) humor. You might give the McKenzie Bros a run for their money. And the Fram filter is fine. Because it's such a low volume sales filter, it's made by someone else for Fram. Even uses metal end caps, not the Fram fiber type. Thanks for vid and the laughs.
Oh man I’ve been roasted left and right and called all kinds of ridiculous names for this video… just having a little fun haha! Glad you enjoyed. After all it’s just a lawn mower ;)
Would been great if "HoseHead," Bob and Doug's dog would have changed the oil.
@@dand3975 Give him a doughnut. Jelly he likes jelly. Jelly doughnut comin.
I am a retired heavy equipment mechanic, and I want to point out a couple things. The first one is using that Fram oil filter. Those are the most cheaply made oil filters. I personally use JD filters. I also use Amsoil oil. I use it in all of my vehicles. Wix makes good filters. Do some research about oil filters. You will be amazed. I buy all of my parts from the JD dealer. After-market parts are questionable at times. The JD stuff is better in my opinion. For years I was a field mechanic for Caterpillar, and that is where I learned about the price that the equipment owner sometimes pays when they use cheap parts. The engine oil is the single most important part of preventive maintenance.
My JD lawn tractor also came with that goofy "quick change" oil filter set up. I changed that out at the first oil change. Changing out that expensive oil filter, but leaving 2/3 of the engine oil in the engine is dumb by my opinion. I also did not like the drain pipe cap that came with the JD kit. It was not positive enough for me. I just used a piece of pipe and a pipe cap. If that little plastic cap jiggles off, the engine will be toast in a very short time.
That is spot on..The basic Fram filter is junk.
Amsoil is top notch.
hmm. planning on s130 come spring...and glad to find out about that Quick Oil filter piece of crap...and the swap out kit.
YES!!! I would totally put that kit on it. Luckily the base model came with the normal oil change setup… if I did it again i’d probably go 120 or above just for the better transmission. But all in all mine is good enough
Love the tip at the end.😄
Congrats, you are person #1 to like this video haha

First off, oil filters are made for a specific purposes. Motor vehicle filters are not made for riding lawnmowers...
Don’t worry, I cross referenced the part number at the store… that filter is made for this lawn mower. It’s a lawn mower my good sir. Not a Ferrari. 3 years later and she still cuts the grass like the day she was new.
The sarcasm was a Good touch. Fram filter though? Nahhh
I suggest you cross check the number on the factory filter for exact number and filter from Fran and see which fram is correct filter
It is the correct Fram. Engine runs fine. I just like to double check the threads and gasket before I put anything on. There’s always room for mistakes at the factory. I’m also looking for rust if it’s been on the shelf for too long etc.
Now that's a sense of humor.
Cross thread works better than lock tight
If you can’t grip it, strip it ;)
My JD E100 smokes when I start it, is that the oil? I've clocked 11 hrs and no maintenance...
If I were you I would talk to the store you got it from and see what they are willing to do about it. Assuming you park it indoors that is not normal. Mines 3 years old and never smokes

They are mad at you. You told their secret. Now everybody knows.
Using dirty oil to lubricate the O-ring on your new oil filter. I have been doing it wrong. I always use clean oil.
It really doesn’t matter. The dirty oil was just in your engine, the o ring stops the engine oil from leaking out, if there was any contamination it would be microscopic. Pretty much every car dealership or mechanic shop will do it the way I did it. You never get all the engine oil out of a motor unless you drop the pan and flush the entire motor.
Using dirty oil on a clean filter is just dumb. Real mechanics do not do this. Trust me lol
Lol great attitude 👌
Thx for the humor!! I just purchased a 2022 S100. Going to fire it up tomorrow. Also, loved the crowing 🐓. Another thing, have you had any issues with the deck belt flying off?
Hey, Thanks! I just put out a “2 year later review” kinda video. No, I haven’t had any issues with that. One time, maybe twice I engaged the PTO and it didn’t go, but I just cycled it again and it was fine. It’s been running fine, no transmission issues so far. I just really need to get the blades off for a sharpening due to me being dumb and hitting a couple rocks and bush hogging little trees/very small land clearing of bushes etc. that it’s not made for.
I have a 2021 S100 and the deck belt broke on it at about 3 hours. Bought a new one and it broke at 7 hrs. Hauled it into the dealer and they found it had a seized idler pulley. Replaced it under warranty along with a new belt and it’s been running fine ever since. Think I have about 20 hrs on it now, we love it.
When engaging and disengaging the pto, make sure you're around half throttle. Doing it at full throttle is hard on the belt and pulleys. It can cause the belt to jump off or even break
@ciphercode2298 that is correct. I don't know why so many people over look that.
How do I put the trans belt back on it slipped off it's brand new
Go check out “Steve’s small engine saloon” on CZcams. Check his channel out he has a bunch of John Deere riding lawn mower videos and I remember one about grease fittings on the shafts that hold the belts. That may help you. Other than that I’m not sure. I haven’t touched the deck other than cleaning it. Good luck to ya though!!
Saving a couple of bucks on an oil filter is not worth a blown engine

FYI - you can add a piece of plastic tubing to the drain plug - I use a piece of 1/2 inch drip irrigation tubing to get the oil from the engine to your drain pan or gallon jug for recycling. Also a few paper towels wadded up under the fuel filter on the frame will keep things a bit cleaner. Placing the used filter into a gallon zip lock plastic bag is a great way to keep it all neat for the recycling. My grease gun wouldn't fit though; so that is a problem for another day.
Ya that’s smart! I used to keep different size tubing in my tool box for hard to reach oil fill necks on motor homes or fancy cars where you can’t drop oil etc. works good for
Bleeding brakes too. I am reeeeaaallly not wanting to take the deck off and sharpen the blades. I assume I Probly don’t need to take the deck off but either way I need to build some ramps for this thing or figure out where some decent lifting points are to jack it up. I just don’t like the “plastic” axles and I haven’t had the right amount of time to do that yet

With my lawn tractor I change the oil/filter once a year regardless of hours of use, and I use the OEM filter, but after the last filter I bought and seeing the Kohler engine oil is now $11 a quart, my lawn tractor will now be getting the standard off the shelf at the parts store oil that I put in my trucks LOL...I'll just add the additional bottle of ZDDP additive which is about the only difference between regular engine oil like Valvoline, Penzoil, etc. None of today's regular engine oils have ZDDP in them, which is needed to keep push rod engines from destroying the cam lobes.
I would recommend tipping the lawnmower to its right to drain all the oil in the engine. Otherwise, great video.
I desperately need one of the stickers you showed us at the end of the video. Where can I get one?
Amazon hahaha
Same way with the grease you better keep that receipt to prove you have been greasing bearings. If it’s under warranty
I don’t do that at all. Can’t be bothered
It is important to note that you should not use latex gloves around oil, oil deteriorates the latex rubber, the polyurethane gloves are popular and work great, most any material other than latex should work fine. Used motor has all kinds of heavy metals and other substances that can cause serious illness. The gloves used in the video were fine.
I did not know that... Was about to use some blue gloves I got from work to do some mower maintenance. Not sure if they're latex or not, but gonna assume they are. Thanks!
It was just whatever was “cheap” at the time. I usually buy my gloves from Costco or an auto parts store.

How do you remove rear wheel on John Deere d.110.
I’ve never had to do that. Google is your friend though. I would remove the dust cap that’s on the end of the axle and there should probably be a nut to unscrew there. It probably has a cotter pin so you’ll likely need a cotter pin and a socket w/ratchet. Again I’ve never done it on these before but it looks like that may be the case.
No nut no cotter pin?
So to keep up with John Deere, Case & IH had to partner up to
come up with 1 whole whit?
!
I like both brands, it would have been really cool to buy a case lawn tractor but I guess they stopped making them years ago. On a serious note though, this lawn mower is still running great and does it’s job well for the entry model. It’s comfortable too.
Fram
you are better off using NAPA oil filters then buying a frame filter. frams come apart and you get filter trash in you engine
My filter was on so tight that I tore it off the base of the filter. I called John Deere and they said they put it on tight to keep from being stolen or loosen up at the store.
Crazy eh! The Lowe’s store I bought mine from said they have to remove batteries etc for the same reason on their display models

That’s why I can’t understand why people are so serious about this lawn mower. It does a good job of mowing the lawn which is what it’s intended for. I checked Home Depot CANADA the other day and the new S100 is $3200 before taxes
@@Darren1767 4 years ago I paid about $3800. US for a x350
@@laff000 they range in price up here but I think they’re anywhere from 5-10,000 CAD. I never wanted one. I wanted the e 120 or 130 for the better seat but wasn’t willing to pay the $$. Figured I’d just get a real tractor one day with a loader and backhoe on it, and have this for lawn.
@@Darren1767 come down here to the States and buy one before the Demoncrats make everything more expensive again.
Try Turing the where to fit the tub in
Try turning the wheel to fit the tub in? That would just make too much sense but when you’re already there why not just keep struggling? Makes for average entertainment.
@@Darren1767 your video was fun to watch
Where are all the comments about how bad Fram filters are?
Loads of them pal ;) I Haven’t had my oil tested but visually it looks decent, the magnet doesn’t show any metal shavings etc.
that mower takes 1.45-1.5 litres
Lol. Perfect
John Deere recommends every 50 hrs for oil change, i own several and it has always been 50 hrs
Ya, I think I went over the service hours on this one. It’s not going to magically kill it if you go over even by a few hours. But of course it’s smarter to stick to the maintenance schedule they give us.
