Regarding the belt jumping off. My local J D Dealer said that when you engage the blades, you must engage the blades with the the excelerater arm (the orange arm) in the middle not full exceleration. Once you engage the blades then you can shift the excelerater arm to high and when you disengage pull you excelerater arm back to middle. Hope this makes since.

This was a very helpful video to me. The John Deere S100 is the first riding lawn mower I have owned. I tried reading the operator's manual that came with the mower, and although it has good information, it just was not that helpful in getting me up to speed on how to operate and maintain it. Your video gave me exactly the information I needed to know. Good Job!

I have a 2002 craftsman mower with the same engine. The only thing I see that Briggs and Stratton has changed is the top plastic and fuel filter. I have maintained this engine annually for 22 years now, mowing 1 1/2 acres and have had zero issues. I change the engine oil and filter along with air filter annually with a fuel filter and plug every other year. I do take the engine cover off and blow out all debris from cooling fins annually also. I know people say Briggs are not great engines but maybe they do not maintain them or I got a special good one. You decide.
Just received my s100 yesterday, and I love the way the way it cuts. I just recently sold my 26 year old craftsman 42 inch for parts because it quit on me last summer while mowing, although it was easier to operate and mowed good. I just have to get use to all of the safety features that this mower comes with.

The big thing if you have this mower delivered to your home is that lever in the back. make sure it is pushed in to be able to drive it. Took me 30 minutes to figure it out. hope this helps.

Thank you for a very thorough video. We are in the process of buying a 3-acre property. The land is not flat. It has small hills and some boulders. I am researching my options as I have never had the need to own a mower before. I have looked at zero-turn mowers and these riding mowers. The last thing I want to do is run over one of the small rocks or boulders on uneven ground and damage the blades. I am still researching. Thank you

This new S Series of mowers seems like a good step from the E Series. I had an E180 (54") but 4 acres of hilly/rough lawn and 7 acres total land took its toll in less than 100hrs. Last year I went to a JD dealer and looked at an X300 Series, salesman talked me up to the X500. I in return talked myself into an X758! 60" auto connect, 4wd, 3cyl diesel, suspension seat, click-n-go, it's a beast!
Those are high quality machines!, I just got "sticker shock" or I would own one!

S series is little more than an E / D / L / LA with some lipstick.... Anyone running an E180 on 4 acres of hilly terrain should not be surprised it was moaning like Blue Iris at a mere 100hrs... that k46 rear end is fine for flat terrain of 3/4 to 1 acre.... the x300 would not fare better as it, too, features the lowly k46... congrats on your x758, you’re not screwing around anymore ;)

I want one so bad to expand my lawn mowing business, but I don't have enough money. right now, I'm cutting yards with a 20-inch roybi electric mower which cuts horribly, and the battery will run out halfway through the yard and I will have to recharge it for 5 hours. I only have 1 customer so I'm making 20 dollars a week and I just really really want to expand my business with this dream-like mower.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for you to post this video. I just ordered an S100 not three hours ago, it arrives tomorrow.
I would have never known about the grease fittings. What will drive me nuts is the button I will have to keep pushing so I
can cut in reverse or maybe just plane back up. I have a lot of tight places I have to back into and cut at the same time.
I guess it's something I can get use to.
Looking forward to using my new lawn tractor.

Great Video! This is my very first riding mower. Truth be told, I was very intimidated about driving it. I feel much better now👍🏻 I do need clarity on going in reverse and RIO.

Hi Brent, I just bought one of these and awaiting delivery. Like most other people I read the reviews and I'm worried not only about the belt jumping off but the belt breaking. I always thought John Deere was a quality product. This is my first ride on tractor and I hope I didn't make a purchase I am going to regret. Thank you for the informative video.

Great video it helped me a lot when I got the lawnmower but after 2 days of cutting the grass my belt broke. I bought it from Lowe’s so I don’t know if dealer have better quality but be aware if you are buying this from Lowe’s.

Great video appreciate the review. I knew that the mower cut going backwards I just didn’t read the manual nor did the delivery guy show us that particular operation. I have enough stuff to read and have read the safety instructions so that’s most important and didn’t mow backwards until knowing how to do it safely. Love my new John Deere mower less wear and rate on the aging body.😎👍🏾❤️

My work place just bought one just like this I love this mower my old one was a ariens from home depot it was a old one but a good one it decided to give it up after two passes so enters John Deere

We had to purchase a new riding mower and of course we chose John Deere because it’s the best made and in the USA 🇺🇸
After getting our other JD refurbished it only lasted 3 months shut down & wouldn’t start
Back up ..
so we decided not to spend any more money on the old one and purchase a new one.
I needed to learn how to use the S100
Because some of the features had changed

How exactly does the fuel gauge work on the s100. the thing between my legs doesnt move when i put fuel in it and no digital gauge reading. So how do i know fuel level?

We just got our s100 today and c get it to go forward or reverse, I just subscribed 👍🏻
I would check to see if your transmission disengage rod is pulled out in the back. If it is out it needs to be pushed in to go engage the transmission if that doesn't help then you may need to take the deck off and see if the transmission belt is broken or not on the pulley on the transaxle. If all else fails, call the dealer you bought the mower from and take advantage of your 2 year/120 hour warranty. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Nice, helpful video but I have to say, the missing storage cover as an option and then they add the beverage holder free. Come on, just how much coast savings are we talking at here?
I know. This is a comment I get quite often and i do agree that it is silly to leave it off.
good info. i'll remember that about 1/2 throttle for activating / deactivating blades. the manual states to operate in full throttle and i do. but my mom and sister sometimes mow and throttle way down because the s-120 is way too much tractor for them i guess and they are nervous about the touchy drive pedals, plus they think they are "saving the engine," bless their hearts. the cutting deck roars quite loud and gets no quieter in lower throttle, and i've told them the cutting deck appears to be rocking in distress under low throttle, but they don't care. anyway, i'm finished preaching to them, and will just do my weed eating and push mower duties where that s-120 can't venture. but i must say that the s-120 is a boss and no toy, and people that are scared or infirm might be well advised to get a type of tractor with manual gears if they want to creep slowly around the yard.

Great review. I was considering a zero turn but need a mower that can do massive amount of leafs. Looking at a John Deer with a leaf mulcher. I'm getting to old to tarp my leaves out to the street. My leaves cover about 10 car lengths and 6' deep. It's usually a 8hr day.
Wow, that is a lot of leaf cleanup. But you can get mulching kits for most of the zero turn mowers so this could still be an option. Thanks for watching!

I when ahead and bought the S100 at Lowes $2,399 with a 10% military discount of $224 was taken off.
The older gentleman telling me about the John Deere was very knowledgeable, he owned one years ago, i ask why JD didn't put the storage lid on, he said hold on, when over to a S130 took the lid off and put in on mine, not many people would have done that.
I when over everything when i got it home, it cut very good, i have some rough farmland here with some Meadows.
Something that's overlooked by some people that's important in getting a new tractor i believe, i will change the oil, filter after 3 hours to get rid of the metal shavings in the new engine.
Another thing i did was bought the front bumper that's important to not Crush that hood, which Lowes dose carry for $90.
They gave me 3 keys.

Has it continued to smoke or only after the first start? I have seen a few of these smoke on the initial start up and then it stops after it's been ran a while. But if it continues to smoke I would take advantage of your warranty and have it looked at by a local dealer. Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment seemed to be just the once. And it was because I had just hooked up battery and filled with oil so I had left the cover open. Didn’t know it NEEDS to be down at all times for proper exhaust

What a great How To video! I have never used a deck washer before. My property does not have any cement/asphalt - just a dirt driveway. Do you think that means I cannot use the deck washer feature? Do you have any tips for what to do before running the mower for the first time? Home Depot is doing a "curbside drop" so I am also checking for videos that let me know what to consider when I am moving/starting the mower for the first time ie. do I need to add oil on delivery .. grease/lube any parts? I just purchased a BG 50 leaf blower from Western Equipment from Lubbock Texas Clovis road and they didn't even ask me anything about buying Motomix to increase my warranty at all I noticed when I go buy equipment I'm never asked if I need help and barely get answers to important questions.I bought a bran new FS94R weedeater in Plainview Texas and they did offer the moto mix which I bought to extend my warranty and was very pleased with the young man that took his time on his lunch break to help me trough the process of purchasing great STEHL equipment.I sure will not be doing business in Lubbock any more.I will travel elsewhere to do business with good people.Man what a mess.disapointed.
