The Briggs and Stratton Twin has a 2 Quart capacity with a standard type oil filter. The EZ Change filter holds .8 Quarts which increases total capacity to 90 ounces instead of 64. When you change the EZ Change Filter, you're changing about 30 percent of the volume.
I have done this conversion dozens of times.. I have found that installing the drain tube and draining the oil first reduces the amount of spillage when removing the EZ Change adapter.

    • @WaltDorsey
      @WaltDorsey Před měsícem +1

Agree - Do the drain tube side first... If you want almost no mess, drive the tires onto 2x4 wood blocks on the side opposite the drain plug side (tips the motor towards that side) and make a Drain Chute from cutting up an empty used milk jug to route the pit you spill when the plug it removed.
Then doing the "filter side" will be almost mess free - just a few ounces into a rag.

I'm going to do this conversion on my E180 as it's due for maintenance now. To avoid the issues with the plastic cap on the pipe, I'm just going to leave the factory bolt there and then when I go to drain it, use my little oil filter drain funnel from my Harley. That way I don't risk losing that plastic cap and the little under filter funnel will direct the oil out over the frame and down into my drain pan. The filter conversion is excellent. I wondered how that would possibly get all the old oil from the motor and now your video shows it doesn't.
    Thanks for making this video!!!

Wow!! That is an easy conversion!!! Thanks for posting this Don! The original filter on this had some good intent for the end-consumer, but overall, it is much worse for the environment, and engine with respect to having close to 100% clean, fresh oil to use after an oil change. Have a great up-coming weekend.

  • @vtramell3196

I did this conversion last year. To ensure the nipple the filter screws onto does not back out, I used a little Loctite on the engine side.
To minimize oil spillage when installing the drain tube, I siphoned out as much oil as I could through the fill tube and then raised mower a little on the drain side.
I always keep a few cans of cheap brake cleaner in my garage, it is great for cleaning up residual oil spillage. Make sure there is a catch pan underneath.

I had an E150 in for service today. Owner said they had done the EZ oil filter change last Fall so no need to change the oil. I checked the oil level per usual and it was WAY too low! So it seems they did the EZ oil change and never checked or added oil. So I topped it off and did the rest of the tune-up and returned it. I had recalled seeing this video on the subject some time ago so I just sent them this video and links to the Amazon parts for the EZ filter ($44 US) and conversion kit WITH filter ($16 US) and encouraged them to have me do it in the The Fall or next Spring. 👍👍

Go to a JD dealer that sells lawn tractors and you will be told that their product is better because you can "change" the oil in 30 seconds without getting your hands dirty. That is their target market. Homeowners who don't want to drain or use an oil extractor and take used oil to recycle. The same homeowner who thinks it's ok to throw a quart of used oil into household garbage. I bought a hardly used E170 and did this same conversion a few months ago. The JD parts counterman acknowledged that every one of their customers who are DIYers has done the conversion.

  • @nosilverharbinger
    @nosilverharbinger Před 10 měsíci

I see the points going for the ez change system. Lots of people don’t change their oil. It is messy. Even people who know what they are doing make messes doing oil changes, and it has a bunch of steps involved. With this you don’t even have to warm up the engine to “change” your oil, there’s no mess. A person may be more likely to use this, and that way they do end up prolonging the life of their engine a bit over never doing anything, but never as long as doing proper oil changes at proper intervals would.
And John Deere makes a bigger fortune selling you their proprietary filters and oil. That’s the most important thing.
I like how they tell the people using this system to add more oil as needed like they actually check their oil level ever, much less top it off. If they did that they wouldn’t use the ez change system.

I did it, very easy but before you remove the existing filter assembly make sure to stuff a lot of rugs under and more importantly behind the old filter assembly. If you don’t you will end up with plenty of oil running through the holes of the frame and on top of the belt pulley. This will happen even after removing the filter and after emptying the oil.
    Do it in this order.
    1. Start the engine to warm up the old oil a bit. Wait 5 min.
    2. Remove oil filter only for now. Also remove the side panel by the filter. 8mm socket, very easy.
    3. Empty the oil out of the pan. I left the existing oil plug in place. I don’t trust the nipple with the plastic part so I didn’t replace it. If that comes off kiss your engine goodbye. My hand pump got rid of all the old oil through the dipstick hole.
    4. Now remove the old filter assembly and put your new oil filter nipple in place.
    5. Screw the new filter on and add 1 and 3/4 quarts of SAE 10W-30 oil. (Only if you are sure all the old oil is out.)
    6. Start the engine and run for a minute. Check for leaks around oil filter.
    7. Shut off engine, wait for 5 min, check oil level and fill as necessary. Mine took 2 qts plus a few ozs more.
What I did didn’t require me removing the panel on the oil plug side.

Fantastic. I can see the idea of the easy/no mess changing of filter but leaving that much oil in and charging that much for the fancy filter seems criminal. I'm guessing they upped the filter change frequency so while you're not changing all the oil (and nothing in the sump/sludge/particles?), you're always adding fresh oil/additives, etc. to compensate.
Too bad you can't unscrew just a filter from the easy change thing after removal, and replace that, then reinstall the easy change thing. Ideally, being able to add oil to the filter/assembly as well before re-installation on the engine.
Next they'll be adding computer controlled engine that they'll force you to pay exorbitant prices to replace by factory trained mechanic when it should be repairable. Support right-to-repair!

Good morning Don. Another great vid. You and I both hate that drippy oil mess. YUK! Would it help or is it worth the time to elevate the side you're working on? Then get the drain tube installed. Once done, set in down to finish draining the oil. You are the pro. You would know best. I don't even own a rider. Awesome vid Don.

Research shows that the main reason they did this was to encourage owners to change the oil. Most folks don't change the oil at all - ever. The thinking with the Easy Change is that getting 75% fresh oil is better than getting 0% fresh oil. There are folks who either don't know how to do a conventional oil change or are just too lazy. This was an attempt to get those folks to do some maintenance. I put this in the same category as the B&S "Check and Add" system where they tell you the oil NEVER needs changed.

I did one in 2018 on my Dad's E180 54 inch deck 25 hp . Being in Michigan it was 65 dollars to change the oil . with that 1 inch nipple and a drain plug he can change the oil for under 20 bucks . The quick change Idea is nice but still a mess in the long run oil in the land fill .

My Kohler 13hp onLT133 already has the smaller filter and I did my oil change this week at 1.8/1.9 qts. Used full synthetic 10w40 for hot summer temps. okay per manual!!!!!
OReilly's had it cheap. The filter does sit on that dumb elbow thing and does keep old oil in it......I Might have to do that change.

Any time oil hits the top of the frame as it does during filter changes, it’s best to inspect and wipe off any overflow that makes it through frame openings and down onto the PTO and belts.

  • @ghost307

I tipped my mower to the left by placing the right-side wheels on a block and the oil in the engine was below the bottom of the drain plug hole. After I got the new pipe fitted and tightened, I put all 4 wheels flat on the ground again and drained the oil. That trick didn't work quite as well on the left side of the engine to remove the filter adapter.
