Or possibly something like supranuclear palsy or other form of motor neuropathy. (To be fair, though: He would have to become a citizen of a commonwealth realm to be made an _actual_ knight of the order - and the US famously left the commonwealth back when it was still named "the empire" by their choice. However, a real knighthood was never even offered to him, so he didn't "turn it down". It's kinda like saying "I had to turn down the title of _doctor_ from UCLA, because I went to MIT, when you're awarded an honorary doctor in a field you never studied anywhere...)

    • @QemeH
      @QemeH Před 2 lety +14

      @cervellone Okay, let's deal with this one at a time:
      (1) You are correct that the *Order of the British Empire* is a chivalrous order created in 1917 by King George IV, primarily to create the possibility of awarding knighthood to people of the empire, who weren't british - previously this honour was reserved to UK citizens. The establishment of this order opened knighthood (and dame-hood for females) up to citizens of the empire and the (then still existing) viceroy of India.
      (2) Today, the "empire" doesn't exist anymore, this much is correct. It's successor in law, however, is the commonwealth of nations - an organisation in which many (but not all) of the former collonies of the british empire are still under a unified umbrella. Some of them still have the Queen as their head of state (like Canada and NZ), some don't. [Sidenote: India is not part of that anymore.] As it pertains to the order, that measn that nowadays the right to make suggestions for this order lies with all commonwealth nations as well as the UK government. Non-commonwealth citizens always were and still are excluded from becoming a knight or a dame, even in this order.
      (3) It is possible to recieve an _honorary_ title within the order. This does not allow you to use the title of "Sir" or "Dame" and you do not gain certain protocollary benefits, but you do become an _honorary_ member of the order. Kinda like an honorary doctorate doesn't give you the right to teach. This _honorary_ title was and is given to people who aren't eligable to the order, if and when they did something that would merrit the order were they of the "empire". Other _honorary_ members of the order include: Kevin Spacey, Melinda Gates, Bono, Pelé and others.
      (4) The order doesn't directly link to NATO, that much is true. The UK, however, is the biggest european partner within NATO and was still part of the EU back when Guliani got his _honorary_ title. It was very important to the EU to maintain the relationship with the US and appease an administration that was on the war path. We didn't want to follow the US into a fruitless war our citizens didn't approve of, but we also couldn't tell the US to F off, because we can't afford them leaving NATO. The honour for Guliani was a rather elegant way of saying: "Hey, we acknowledge your hurt and we see your effort. We are willing to laud it and help it." without doing anything directly or elevating an administration that was on the war path. Because if anyone asked: We just awarded the mayor for his response. *Clearly* nothing political.. right? ;)

    One of the pleasures of the show is imagining that I’ll always be able to watch him do this. It will end, on some sad, dark day, but watching this it feels very far away.

    "Mr Giuliani, This court has found you guilty of aiding and abetting the Big Lie. You are hereby sentenced to 5 years in federal prison OR to publicly admit that Joe Biden legitimately won the presidency and risk the ire of the former president's supporters. Would you like a few minutes to consider?"

    The emotion in Jon Batiste’s voice while talking about his mentor literally made me burst into tears about someone I never knew existed

    I'm not worried about Rudy Giuliani. I'd have to care about him first.

    That's one hell of a defence right there. "I'm not an alcoholic, I use the word functioning, I've never been treated for alcoholism, I can't remember the last time I was drunk."

    There is a difference between 'being drunk' and 'being a drunk'. I've been 'drunk', but my brother-in-law was 'a drunk'. They came and got him at work (pharmacist) one day and carted him off to rehab or somewhere like that. Boy did that make me laugh!

      My brother was an alcoholic. Did you see the clip last week of a guy on a plane growling? Sounded just like my bro when he was _reallly_ drunk.
