John Oliver's material is great because it ages so well. I can watch anything he has posted, even from years ago, and it still applies to today. Not only that but he talks about th entirety of the thing; the history, the present and the possible future of it, on top of that, he is just BRILLIANTLY funny. Great stuff.
True, but I also think it's what makes it so depressing sometimes. Watching a documentary piece from 6 or 7 years ago and feeling like the only difference time made is the colour of John Oliver's hair loudly underlines the inaction of those responsible of the issues at hand.

He makes great takes and points on the world, but it definitely makes you said seeing all the deep dives into things that you didn't even know about cuz you realize each time, that the world continues to be a terrible place that itgetting worse. But again, the way John gives us the news definitely makes it more palatable

The most interesting part of all of this is, at least to me, if you grew up in New York, you knew that Guliani was always a slime ball. After 9/11 happened the REST of the US praised him but everyone in the outer boroughs knew him for what he was. Which is WHY the trump presidency comes as a shock to New Yorkers still, because we've dealt WITH trump and his insanity for an enormous amount of time, and to see him be elected president because people believed he had morals and that he would change the US for the better was laughable because people only knew trump as a man on TV while we knew him as a racist bankrupt idiot who did anything for attention. And well, look at where we are now.

Parodies have to reflect reality in some way, or else they aren't parody.
Quite possibly my favorite thing about Oliver and this show is how he takes a look at both the good and the bad. Mentioning how he was rightly celebrated for his part in the recovery during 911 but making it clear Guiliani was always pretty wacky. It's eye-opening sometimes how he does this every week.
About the first marriage to his second cousin thing--Rudy knew full well about it when they were getting married. Both of 'em did. Both their immediate families knew about it. Their extended family knew about it.

Yes. Kinda reminds me of Charles Lindbergh, another shady character that we crowned as our beloved All-American hero before anyone was willing to examine his personal history. Just one decade after his historic airplane flight, Lindbergh was implicitly defending the Nazis, in public, over and over again, as part of his “America First” campaign (sound familiar? 😒). He also turned out to be a devout eugenicist, a raving racist, a very unfaithful husband, and just an all-around awful person. As with Giuliani, we could have *known* he was an awful man if we had just looked into his past actions before we bestowed so much praise on him. But we didn’t - for either of those men. In fact, Lindbergh and Giuliani were both named Time Magazine Person of the Year (1927 for Lindy, 2001 for Rudy).
Rudy was a villain from the start.
Makes you wonder why anyone wants to run for office anymore. How many people could have their entire life picked apart and scrutinized and come out unscathed? You'd have to literally have no shame whatsoever. I guess that's why we have Donald Trump and the rest of them are 75+ years old.

Biologically, there are no issues, and societies with cultural objections are in the minority. Even first cousin marriages aren't generally banned (cultures which historically do often refer to first cousins as siblings to make linguistically clear whom you can't marry), and second cousin marriages often aren't even on the radar.
Of course, if you grew up with your second cousins, that's a different factor which can make it icky, but most people don't, and most people don't check their respective lists of great-grandparents for overlap before getting intimate.

It’s crazy because at this point, you could make an entire 22 minute episode about the things Giuliani did just in November of 2020. He is insane.
In all seriousness, though, this cult of personality among republicans (even well-meaning, intelligent ones) surrounding Ivanka is getting a little gross. She's not a humanitarian, she's not a politician, she's not an educator, or a philanthropist. At best, she's intelligent and pretty. There are a freakishly high number of powerful, old white dudes fixating on her as some weird messiah figure in the Trump era, despite not being able to tell me or anybody else a single meaningful quality she has to be deserving of that fixation.
I'd stop thinking it was weird if somebody could tell me a single objectively beneficial quality she has in respect to the American people that makes her such a popular talking point for newscasters and politicians.
I don't like Dems or Reps, but the first saved my life, but not thru any recent legislation or campaign.
Probably because she's white and "very stepford wife" like. She's their ultimate fantasy. There is nothing to her underneath the surface. Even in her "most candid" interviews she's very rehearsed and unnatural. Like she memorized a script. It is weird. You are right to think that.
I guess, it should absolutely be enough that she's pretty (at least for the fans of aged plastic). What do you want more for a First Lady, the most ridiculous title on earth?

I think that's simply an aspect of old white dudes? They just uncontrollably fixate on young, pretty, intelligent women by default.
Lemme count how many old white dudes in influencial positions eyed me... lesse, one guy who obsessively loved my mom and wanted me as his daughter (I read his diary (journal? Planner?). The number of writings to that end was unsettling), another guy with the same pursuits, _another_ guy like that, and one guy who was just a bit too cuddly.
That's off the top of my head, and only those that creepily eyed me. I'm sure my mom got a whole lot more.

To be fair expert studies have shown that cousins having sex/having children is no more likely to produce genetic defects than two strangers doing it. That is provided the pairing only happens ONCE. When you get cousins/ Family members breeding together over and over again like in THAT"s when you the kind of screwed-up inbreeding you would often see in the royal family of Europe.
I still find it kind of creepy (no doubt to the cultural norms in which I was raised) but to each their own.
That being said, it should be pointed out that cousin incest differs from brother-sister incest and/or parent/child incest. This kind of incest has a MUCH HIGHER risk of causing genetic defects in children.
