At the time of its founding in the 14th century by Diego Lopez V de Aro Bilbao was the commercial center of Spain. This was connected with the port of Bilbao and the export of iron mined in Biyskai quarries.
Throughout the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Bilbao experienced heavy industrialisation, making it the centre of the second-most industrialised region of Spain, behind Barcelona.
