  • Is the McLaren 765LT Spider just an open-top version of the already brilliant coupe, or does it have a different, more engaging personality? Steve Sutcliffe hit the road and track in Spain to find out.

I digest videos from EVO, and other similar and equally awesome channels, on a regular basis. I've consumed every copy of EVO right back from issue 04 when I was a teenage. That's given me a false sense of confidence in my understanding of just how magical cars like this McLaren really are - the reality is I've never sat in one.
I went for a drive in my friends 2020 Audi RS3 the other and he let me give it the full beans Launch Control... hoooooly sh*t.
As blown away as I was in that moment, I couldn't help but imagine what a car like this (over 1 sec quicker 0 - 62) must feel like. Thank you so much for giving us an insight into exotic machinary that us mere mortals would never normally get the chance to enjoy.

Again Mr. Sutcliffe hits the real issue with this sports car : its price.
For raw power, as good as it is, there are other equally appealing competitors which also have a legitimate sport lineage like McLaren, have comparable or better performance capabilities, yet cost a significant amount less but deliver better quality and refinement.
Let's just consider ASTON MARTIN's DB11 AMR. Turn-your-head-around good looks. Exceptional performance.
Every day usability. Irresistible mechanical spell: V12!!.
And close to perfect fit and finish quality in every single inch of the vehicle.
Blazes!,,, Actually, even the very expensive DBS SUPERLEGGERA commands a price, as of today's date, while 'speccing' a large part of the options list, lower than the base 675LT Spider.
And we all know McLaren's recent-past history on the quality shelf.
When viewed in that comparison -- and I'm talking as a genuine potential customer not just figuratively -- the AMR outshines the 765LT, mostly because after I park a car in my garage, regardless of if it was a pocket easy purchase, or if I'm burning the barn and my children's inheritance in the process, I don't want to have to see the faces at the dealership again for a long while.
I buy sport cars and motorcycles, not headaches and nightmares.
It is a beautiful, purposeful and performing sport vehicle, that's indisputable.
I truly hope durability and quality are up to the asking price; otherwise it is just a purchase for this brand lovers and loyalists. Nothing wrong with that, as we all have our own rationally-questionable allegiances in that regard.
But, for the rest of its target market who are not yet smitten, the price tag, which will surely will be way higher than MSRP given its very low planned production numbers, and the brand's past quality sins, will give most a moment to pause and consider other options.

With 765 1/4 mile times in the low 9s, no rational person agrees that the car has any difficulty putting power down. Ask GT2RS or 488 Pasta drivers how badly they get smoked by 765s . . . .

They were at a lunch gathering and someone their had just gotten their new 765. His car literally wasn’t able to drive properly for more than 5 minutes. He returned it to McLaren and got an SVJ. If you’ve seen Alex Choi’s Instagram stories in the past, you have he has explained that his 720 that is completely stock other than wheels, a wrap, and down pipes has been at the McLaren service center more than he’s had it. As recently as the Savage Rally (the savage garage hosted a huge super car rally) Alex’s 720 actually just stopped functioning completely. The car wouldn’t shift; sometimes it would shut off while he was driving and sometimes it just wouldn’t turn back on. Since he couldn’t shift he also couldn’t even do the speed limit. He just had it trailered the rest of the rally and had to had a Fiat 500. I’m positive you’ve seen Senna’s completely burning to the ground just from wiring problems. @@akafxde7245 They don't have a 'massive flaw' though. It's true that there were some build quality issues with early 720s, but this is far from unique to McLaren (e.g. Porsche 991.1 GT3s needing whole engine replacements, or Ferrari 458s catching fire). The fact is, this whole McLaren reliability issue has been hugely overblown because of some attention-seeking vloggers, the result being people like yourself who've probably never even sat in a McLaren but feel the need to post the kind of nonsense in your original comment. Of course the brand isn't perfect and there will always be those who are unlucky with reliability, but having spoken to numerous McLaren owners, the vast majority were (like me) completely satisfied with their cars.

There isn't another car in the world that looks like a 720/765 because of the headlights. And they are very different from the previous Mclarens from pretty well all other angles too except possibly the back.

Put a 720/765 next to another McLaren and you’re telling us that you can’t see a difference? Time to get your eyes checked!

So a closed circuit on a dry day and a vacant hill road in sunny Spain are enough to render a verdict? This is an idealized view of the world. To answer the question of what's wrong with it, my opinions: 1. Starting price is (to select two competitors of many) $60K more than a Huracan STO and $100K more than an F8 Tributo. All of these cars have absurdly overpriced options (and currently insane dealer markups) so who knows where you actually wind up, but an F8 is a dream car to most anyone and you're starting out well ahead. 2. It loses half of its value instantly upon delivery. Depreciates like fresh fruit. 3. It's ugly. Opinion obviously, but not a rare one. Also, it's indistinguishable from every other McLaren except to the true nerds. 4. It breaks if you look at it wrong and will continue breaking until you hate it. 5. The dealer network is awful. It's likely an amazing car to drive (when it's working), but everything else about it is fairly terrible. Given that most owners will only rarely drive it as shown in this video, all of that seems relevant.

Perhaps the most absurd stream of nonsense I've read in a long time. Back here in reality, no sane person would compare a 765 to an STO or to an F8. Start with power outputs and the Italians are nowhere compared to the McLaren. Where the Italians do have bigger numbers is in the weight. Primarily because they never bothered to invest in series-production of carbon chassis. Power to weight ratios: the McLaren is around 50% ahead of the Italians; in run of the mill cars, think Subaru BRZ vs a Cayman S. The F8 in particular has laughable styling that, though clearly inspired by a 1980s Lotus, doesn't have the finesse that those cars had - - but at least styling is in the eye of the beholder, unlike the Ferrari's dynamic shortcomings. If you've ridden in or driven an F8 you will know that to compensate for chassis deficiencies, Ferrari have made the coupe hard as a rock (similar to the Huracan Performante) while their idea of a spider is to just cut the roof off and slap in a few reinforcing chunks of pasta . . . . the F8 spider wobbles like a 1970s VW Beetle convertible. As to reliability: you're about 10 years behind on your assessment of McLaren; the first series of 12C had some issues. Personally, I've had a 650 Spider for nearly 6 years and it has been less trouble than the 911 that preceded it and comparable to a Subaru that I had years ago. Others have already commented about how laughable your "depreciation" comments are. Over 6 years my 650 is down around 20%. You sound like a Ferrari dealer or owner tossing his toys out of his pram yet again as his pet product is embarrassed by those darn Brits.
