  • McLaren's 765LT takes the already monstrously fast 720S and turns the wick up even further. On sticky Pirelli Trofeo R rubber, will it beat the P1 to become the fastest McLaren we've ever lapped around the stunning Anglesey circuit? We called in Steve Sutcliffe to find out...

      Exactly. put this on cup2 and put the sf90 on these and the times would be flipped. without the same tires its really more of a tire comparison than a car comparison.

      @DB-fn3fz Před rokem +2

      McLaren are adamant about making their cars suitable for anyone to drive. By using less wide of tires, it ironically makes the car safer because it lowers the threshold of grip and therefore makes the performance more predictable. Other companies like Corvette and Porsche rely on wide tires because they are heavily marketed by their laptimes. Ferrari and McLaren are more artistic with their approach and focus on building "drivers cars" as opposed to track machines, although they just so happen to produce very impressive laptimes.

Some more softly sprung cars have an advantage too as the are less affected by riding the curbs than the more track focused cars are, not to mention it’s annoying hearing it vibrate the camera gear every single time it runs over the ribbing 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @WeirdBrick
    @WeirdBrick Před rokem +151

    Not the ideal track for the 765 and it’s one where tyre grip is going to make a big difference on these slow speed bends!
    Cup2R’s are in a league of their own right now and offer ridiculous mechanical grip, Mac need to jump brands!
    Also to McLarens credit they do under tyre cars to enhance its drivability but for track specials they should up their sizes. A GT3 RS with half the torque has bigger rears lol

    • @david1rosenthal
      @david1rosenthal Před rokem +7

      No ideal track ? If we follow your reasoning, there should be one track per car... I don't think it's an ideal track for a P1 which would also be more comfortable on faster curves. The facts are there, the 765LT is a monster, it doesn't need to show more to make it understood. But it just so happens that it's not the fastest road-legal car in the world, that's all.

    • @mattgallagher4232
      @mattgallagher4232 Před rokem +19

      pista & 765LT have the same tyre sizes, not really an excuse. At the end of the pista lap, Steve mentions it likely could be even quicker (he says half a second) in bone dry, warm conditions. The difference between the trefeo R and cup2R are not as much as the gap in laptime. Its simply just not faster here, both cars would prefer a more power track.
      Probably more logical to argue the open diff in the mclaren vs the LSD in the ferrari is a bigger factor. Although the mclaren did launch 2 years after the pista which says alot..

    if it's just lap times we're looking to improve maccas simply need wider tyres, front ones especially. All of them - even the Senna for heaven's sake - have absurdly narrow tyres for a true track focused setup. However I don't believe it's a mistake as such rather than a knowing trade off given McLaren appear to want their cars to communicate alot to the driver, which narrow tyres do better.

    Secondly tyres, as the Ferraris were shod with super sticky "qualifying tyres", which are only optimal for a few laps. Which is also an SF90 trick too i.e. qualifying mode to give one or two hot laps. The McLaren will keep performing lap after lap, and its tyres are genuinely fitted to road car ordered by customers - unlike the Ferraris where they are just an option, so they can generate good press results.

    Two things to know:
    1 Pirelli’s suck balls big time and they are no comparison to Cup2r’s
    2 McLarens need a limited slit diff badly to put its power down out of corners better and be more stable under power - thank god, the new Artura has got it, finally
