- Bike locks need to be heavy duty and secure enough to prevent your bike from being stolen. At the same time, they need to be lightweight enough for you to take your locks with your during your rides, so you can actually lock up your bike. Here's the lightest, secure bike lock and what bike lock security ratings actually mean.

Listen, the surefire method of never having your bike stolen is to park your bike as close to an e-bike as possible because that’s what the thieves want.
I would second this were it not for the fact that they’ll use the same tools and machines to steal your bike because of proximity.
Problem is that doesn't work when you have an e-bike! 🤣
Well if I was a thief a regular bike is easier to pickup and put in a truck but yeah ebikes are more desirable also with ebikes remove the battery
If you lock a bike up in public on a regular basis, don’t ride anything you can’t replace! Camouflage is a decent tactic, make your bike look beat up, remove branding, add tape and stickers to make unrecognizable as a nice bike. Zach’s bike is too nice to leave locked up for very long, but as a smaller brand may not be as recognizable. If a professional thief wants your bike, no lock is unbeatable. Good video, it’s sad bikes are under such threat.
The litelock and hiplock pretty much are unbeatable. Kryptonite and Abus ULocks aren't great in big cities where you might find a thief with a grinder. Everywhere else you will probably be fine.
This is really dumb advice lmao. Put a sticker on it yeah that’s gonna do anything…. Even the cheapest wheel can be sold for $20, they’re looking for their next drug fix, I don’t think they’re gonna be picky .
I use my $200 fixed gear, when I’m riding to work, or to buy groceries and only take my 2k bicycle out for exercise/hobby cycling where I don’t leave it out of my site for hours
Zach's bike is only going to appeal to a very small subset of thieves. They'd have to know what it is and how much it cost to even be interested in it. To the average person or thief it barely looks like a bike. Single speed, brakeless sometimes, no suspension. It didn't look like something they're going to be able to sell quickly.
And if the average bike thief tries to ride off on it they'll break their face the first time they have to stop.
I got into fixed gear, bike commuting and always carrying two locks because of you. I’ve never gotten my bike OR WHEELS stolen in Mexico City, which is something to be proud of I guess.
I may be moving to Guadalajara soon and I'm in the need of a second lock for riding there. Two locks is the way
When I lockup in public, its next to the $2k and up bikes. I frequently use the bikeshare that connects my city to the capital of our state--mostly to never be afraid my baby will get stolen when I'm out and about. My rule about bike locks is that I spend about 10% of the cost of the bike--$40 for a $400 bike, $100 for a $1k bike, etc.
Thanks Zach, my son learned this a decade ago in San Francisco when he lost the fixed-cog Specialized Allez I built for him. Yes he used a U-lock.
hey a had a question. I bought a second hand fixed gear a few days ago a had it for 30€ and the reparations and custom a made on it costed me 24€ , so 54€ in total. It was in perfect condition putting aside some little scratchs and the rear wheel bearing i had to change. It is a margot cycling "fixie" do you think it was worth my money ?
Everyone saying ride a shit bike doesn’t know how to live.
Zach have you seen the ABUS GRANIT SUPER EXTREME 2500 it’s ABus Response to the X1-X3 and D1000
I use a kryptonite lock for rear wheel and frame with a cable that loops round the front wheel, and my bike is never out of my line of sight for more than 15 minutes at a time unless im at work, where it is in a secure lot.
2 locks would be better, but the weight saving is why i make the compromise
I recently got into this whole fixed gear thing and I'm pretty much a noob at all this since I never really had a lot of money to buy bikes, so I always had very old, rusty, shitty ones. Now I bought a bike that looked good, is relatively light and not too expensive since I'm still in collage, not supported by anyone, paying everything myself and working way too much for a shitty loan. So I got myself a fixie inc. I couldn't really find any reviews about it so I was wondering wether you knew them and what you think of them? (I haven't gotten it yet, since I ordered it online so idk myself and I invested some time in researching stuff that's good to know to start out with this whole thing and I did everything right with the size stuff and so on. So hopefully ordering online wasn't too bad.)
Not if you live in Oakland and even when I take BART to San Francisco for work
there have been times when crazy peeps tried snatching it from me while riding BART...
Are you going to Sacramento pke this weekend?
The irony is that a beater bike with a light lock is probable lighter then a more expensive light bike with a heavy very secure lock.
Honestly in a place like Texas id feel fairly safe about my bike not being stolen because the thieves are scared there. But in any of the more soft on crime areas nah forget it. Basically if the usual response to theft isn't the thief being pummeled or scared off. Then I'm worried
I liked the shade thrown to Texlock xD
Litelock X3 is the way to go. The hiplock is too small, though REI carries them. Any Kryptonite can be cut through in under a minute. The weakest Kryptonite is only slightly worst than the thickest and is a 1/3 of the weight.
Damn, that lock costs about as much as my bike, jeez loise.
im going to fly to America, a 10 hour flight, just to leave a note saying I can steal your bike at any time and I will, I'm just waiting.
Zack you first mentioned how the safest way to secure a bike when needed is to make your bike not worth a criminals time, effort and risk. Your flexibility lock looks easy to break even if it's not. I think that could attract attention in itself. The worse u lock would make me as a criminal think that bikes well locked up I'm not going to wipe out an angle grinder to try. -I mean all of this in the nicest way possible. I just feel the illusion of hard to steal holds a high value
In the U.K., hooded machete motorbike riders are targeting cyclists, especially around London.
This type of targeted violence and theft is increasing against cyclists. The criminals are getting really brazen without fear of getting caught or arrest. It’s getting scary to be a cyclist.
There is little risk of getting caught or actual punishment, because in the U.K., sadly along of the general public have an ideological hate of cyclists that is getting fuel by social media and some media outlets.
Also, how about a vibration alarm. And look out for each other out there... I did see a guy make a vibration detection that sent you a text when fiddled with.
don't forget to never lock your bike up to something easier to cut than your lock. i knew people who would use a five-star lock to secure their bike to a sign pole or wrought-iron railing, only to come out and find the railing/pole cut through, and their bike and lock missing.
a profesh thief will 100% sawzall through a rail, throw your bike in a van, and deal with the more laborious task of cutting the u-lock in a remote location.
if i can't find a proper bike rack, i won't lock to it.
One thing I love about my ebike is it doesn't care if I throw 30 pounds of stuff on it
I've had trouble with components get stolen. If your in a high traffic area I recommend putting clear shoe goo into the hex key holes. Hasn't failed me yet. If you need to adjust seat height or take off handlebars then just use a pin or sharp object to take out the dried shoe goo.
All gangsta till the thief takes out his key and removes the dried shoe goo unless u newly place a new batch of glue every time u park your bike
key wouldn't cut it. any deterrent is better than none if its an issue imo @@Follyful
@@lucaswalter6145 agree
There are some strong magnetic balls you put into hex key sockets. To remove 'em you have to have even stronger magnet.
Get in there!
Agreed - Litelok make the most practical bike locks - I have a Litelok One 👍🏼
Wait does people still gets arrested in California?
“Can I hit your vape” lmao
You Zack Gallardo have convinced me to buy a fixed gear, I live in a very hilly part of England this will either be a good purchase or a horrendous one, good luck to me, I will blame you for either one, have a good day
Light purple is not an ideal color for a quick flip. Ditto bolt on wheels. Works for me.
Do they ship world wide?
Yeah Litelok ship worldwide
Abus also makes a damn-good bike lock
I want you to review about fixi bike cheap price 😊
Have a friend who had a rather high end mtn bike stolen out of a police station...by a one legged man
are you talking based from experience?
1:30 not for long 😂
I use two locks for my bike.
HE DID THE KNOCK
Love the skyrim reference
Hi Zach, love ur content. 🔥
Have you considered doing a video on, creative ways to carry heavy locks? I commute with my bike daily, and having to figure out how to carry my 1kg Abus chain lock is a constant struggle. 💀
I've seen people wear thier lock like a belt, but I dont think that's very comfortable.
Do you use that chain lock everywhere you park or just one specific place like work? You could leave it at a place you lock up often.
I tend to carry mine in my backpack's water bottle pockets, classic messenger-style-- having two locks balances the pack out
lightest bike lock? i go to gym so every lock is lightweight. 😛
You keep the lock and the Glock. Your bike is your castle in Texas.
You forgot the most important question when reviewing locks: Does it rattle?
The ‘Lock Picking Lawyer’ just joined the chat 💬
😉😏
The penalty for horse theft was once death, just saying. Easy crimes require severe punishments.
Can we talk about how Zach is taking up the entire public bike rack by locking parallel? (jk jk, but please don't do that)
Who ever locks up an expensive bike on street for longer than a few minutes?
Honestly leaving your bike in the backyard is a bad idea maybe my ebike since the thief has to lift 61lb over a fence but honestly you are just asking for thieft at that point
I only trust the
