Biking in California: Expectation vs Reality

A lot of people have this idea that biking in California is a dream with great bike infrastructure, chill drivers, and seaside views. I've lived and biked in California for most of my life. The Case for Alt Bars

Drop bars and risers are the standard handlebars, but they're not great for everyone. That's where alt bars come in. Alt bars exist because they solve problems with bike fit, are better for different riding styles that aren't strictly road or mountain biking, and are just plain fun. If you're not a competitive cyclist, alt bars can reinvigorate your love of cycling. Here's the case for alt bars...

Carbon Fiber for Daily Cyclists

Everyone rides their chain so sloppy! Tighten that shiz up! The biggest advantage of riding fixed is the direct connection you have with the road. Sloppy chains just muck this up. Worried about accelerated wear of your drivetrain? Start riding a derailleur bike 😂

I don't really understand this topic, the most important thing imo is your shoulder position but I never see it mentioned. If I have my drop handlebars on the highest portion of my Wabi (on top of 4 1cm spacers) then I can't reach the hoods while maintaining a neutral shoulder. If I bend at my hips more to reach the hoods then now my shoulder blade is retracted (squeezing together) and that will cause pain in a long ride. To fix this I'd have to run a really short stem or use a bar style that are swept back a bit. Or I can just move the stack down since I can comfortably bend lower. Simple visualization is to put your bike against a wall or ideally on a stand/trainer so its straight then sit on the saddle with your normal pelvic tilt and have your shoulder NEUTRAL and arms at 90 deg from your chest with a slight bend at the elbow. Then start to bend forward. Your handlebars should be anywhere on that arc you create bending forward until you hit your flexibility/comfort limit. This will allow you to hold the handlebars while maintaining a neutral shoulder position. If you physically can't adjust your bike to get a position (with different stem lengths and stack heights) that is comfortable then you probably bought the wrong bike for your body/flexibility

I commute everyday in a city that has no infrastructure for bikes. I’ve carved out the safest routes that I can take, ALWAYS wear a helmet, and day and night I’ve got the brightest blinking lights I could find running whenever I’m on the bike. I’m in Indiana now, and I’ve found living in CO, TN and KS as well, that as long as I’m hauling ass and not just lollygagging on down the road like I’m on the beach or something people tend to be pretty cool on the road. I’ll have to say that the two times I’ve been hit I was on a sidewalk crossing an intersection once and on an urban paved trail that came up to a large intersection the second. Not doing that again!

Enter "snapped alluminum handlebar" to Google seach and check the images. Corroded alluminum parts snap as well and it happens often. My daily commuter bike has a handmade corme molly frame from the 90th and its an amazing bike and is fun to ride, but compared to my carbon roadbike it just feels soft and wobbly. BTW any carbonbike with breaks is 100 times saver than a fixie without breaks. 😜

I was a little stupid . I was a bike messenger in the late 90's. My bike broke down and I got a breakless fixie / track bike to replace the mountain bike. I had never ridden a track bike for more than a quick spin on a friend's. Think up the block and back. I took it out on the weekend then went to work on Monday. Young dumb and full of ____. Can't believe how dangerous that was rushing through traffic running lights with only two or three days experience riding a fixie / track bike. Things worked out for me, course I'd been riding regularly since I was 4 and messengering for 3 years. nothing much happened that I would blame on being brakeless. But it was thrilling. I can remember one day ducking through traffic cutting and skidding left and right, weaving, and through traffic, throwing my weight all around the frame to get the force needed to maneuver and hearing another messenger shout "Do that sh!t!" I used to look down on people that had a brake(s) on their bike, called them "fakies". 53 now and getting a new fixie / track bike and probably going to get a front brake cause my wife says I have to😥
