Sehwag's Miscalculation - with 1 wicket required in 4 Overs | Why Laws (& Umpires) Matter | Cricket

  • India vs South Africa - 2010
    2nd Test
    South African Tour of India
India had lost the First test to south africa & was at the risk of losing a home series after 6 years.
India had to win this test match..
& within sniffing distance of victory
with just 1 wicket required in 4 overs, & Hashim Amla still on the crease
    Virendra Sehwag did the unthinkable
He kicked the Ball to the boundary.
What followed was a textbook Demonstration of Umpiring and it's Laws at it's finest.
Following the 2000 Revision of MCC laws
    from law 19.2 to 41.2 to 42.2....
It was in Short, the proof
    that Umpires - still Matter.

I used to work in South Africa in 2010. It was lunch time at work when the game was nearing it's end. I was sitting with my South African colleagues in the canteen, having finished lunch and all watching the match intently. So were the people at the other lunch tables. Harbhajan was bowling and I think it was a close lbw call; I on my part cried a loud 'Yess!!' in excitement of that appeal forgetting that I was amongst South Africans and mine was the only voice that came out at that moment. I was embarrassed and looked across the room, the others were nodding their head in disapproval while my colleagues who had lunched with me let out a sheepish laugh.
At the end of the match, which wasn't too far from that moment, I was secretly elated but took caution not to show it too much. Great memory and greater still, those people in South Africa. They know what is sports and what sportsmanship is.
And hey, cricket has LAWs; other sports have rules. Great video otherwise.

If what Sehwag did is unfair, then why intentionally not taking a run to retain strike should also be considered unfair?

    • @alicebrus2703
      @alicebrus2703 Před rokem

They did it legally/ within the law
If it had gone for the four naturally then couldn’t be batting next over.
You play the the game agreeing to its laws/rulesat that time or suffer the consequences.

I watched the highlight, I observed that probably wasn't deliberate from sehwag, and ofc as u said it was the 5th ball of the over not the 6th, and amla would've wanted to take a Single on the last delivery of the over to keep the strike, not on the second last delivery

Poor sportsmanship by Sehwag. No matter how good a batsman he is, he doesn't really have high regards for the rules of the game.. very casual attitude..
