I think you might be right! Maybe not the loudest opinion, but I actually liked Halo better than The Mandalorian, especially towards the end of the first season. The Mandalorian is like playing on Easy - it's entertaining, but there's basically zero stakes because he's in title and baby Yoda is a money printer. Halo (both the games and the show) are much darker and grittier by comparison. Sure, Star Wars "tries" to go for that dark / apocalyptic vibe and every once in a while manages to pull it off, but that franchise has way too much baggage for that sort of atmosphere to be taken seriously.
@evil-wombat you know they say everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think you are abusing the privilege. JK but the halo show is the same thing because master chief is literally the main character and is in no real danger. Especially because if they actually did the show right it would also basically be a money printer.

Dredd taught me that you can definitely make something awesome with a main character who never takes off his helmet. So yeah, it can be done twice.

Urban is a Dredd fan. Not taking the helmet off was a condition of signing on for the movie.

they took a character famous for never showing his face even after 20 years. and decided he should spend the majority of his screen time with his helmet off. THAT is all you need to know about how accurate this show is to its source material
It is not even about the source material. Chief communicated evrything with his helmet off just fine in games. I expected such acting mastery here and I was disappounted.
Hell, he spent half the season with his armor off.
every member of noble team is more interesting than john 117 by design. THAT game introduced personality and flair to the INTENTIONALLY blank slate mjolnir mk 2 or whatever 117 wears in H1. masterchief is supposed to be nameless, faceless, a ghost, formless. 343 undid everything bungie created for a few dollars.
Halo is being shown on Brittish TV pretty soon and the ads on TV show every scene with Master Chirf with his helmet on. Also Quan Ha is barely shown despite all the screen time she gets, false advertisement doesn't even begin to describe it.
The same mistake the older Judge Dredd movie made.
I'll give the showrunners credit for one thing, it was pretty creative of them to replace all the cgi with XBOX 360 cutscenes. So authentic!

It's kinda funny that there was more drama and tension in 44 seconds of the Halo 4 scene when Cortana talks about how real the star orbiting Requiem is. And in that scene, Chief has his helmet on, but probably displays more emotion in Halo 4 than he ever does in this show, and that's WITHOUT seeing his face. You know who was the only other person who had a more sad actual facial expression in the games? Arbiter in Halo 2, when he learns of the Rings' true purpose.
The final scene of halo 4 where he loses cortana and then talks to laskey while staring at earth is super hard hitting and completely negates the "you can't convey emotion with a helmet" argument.
I love red vs Blue. Feel the need to rewatch that now

Amen to that. They spent a nearly 2 whole episodes on Kwan and it had basically no impact on the master chief storyline.
Half the run time*
Red Vs Blue is 18ish seasons long, with wildly varying quality from season to season, is older then CZcams, was made with almost no budget, and is a comedy/parody. Yet it is better then this professionally made action/drama that probably cost more money in one season then all of the seasons of RvB combined.
To this day whenever someone mentions a timeline, in my head I hear Caboose correct them.

season 10 had more emotional impact than the entirety of this show. and there's a scene where a guy gets a grapple hook stuck to his balls

I love it when multi billion dollar production companies take advantage of our childhoods to make mediocre films that somehow end up looking worse than the actual games themselves

Kind of seems like the Paramount way to tell old fans to get bent because they are being replaced by new fans. Doesn't matter if other studios are making big money on a mix of old and new fans the old fans have got to go.

Word is the writers did not play the game or did not like the halo story. So they just did whatever and said that this is a different timeline to the original story.
@@msgsgt My headcanon is that it's an in-universe historical drama made decades later that took a few too many liberties. It happens all the time IRL, with Michael Bay's _Pearl Harbor_ being one example off the top of my head.

They had the ingredients to make a great series. They just decided to do their own thing. The halo series is pretty much good to go on its own.

The funniest part of this show was watching it with my mom, who knew nothing about the Halo games. Yet even she could tell something was off based on what little she saw of my brother and I playing the games.

I wish I could say the same for mine lol She thought it was accurate. But at least it got her interested in the lore of the games! Whether or not she'll watch gameplay of them is another matter entirely.... She asks me sometimes "Why do you watch people playing games when you could just play them?"

One of the best HT's I've seen
The first game is literally a perfect movie or show already, you barely have to do anything. It has a twist in the middle where things get really crazy, good characters that could be expanded on, a satisfying ending that hints at more to come. I don't understand why they had to go so crazy with it when they could and probably should have played it safe and just copied Halo CE.
Halo CE is a masterpiece of a story
Truly one of the best video games ever made
You should read the novel "The Flood," it's based on CE and actually does expand on all the characters.
This would be such a good film.
Or a three season arc focusing on reach. Telling the story about the rise of the spartan project, the war with the rebels and finish it all with the covenant invsion.
That face when people keep forgetting that the live action Forward Unto Dawn exists, and it's last 30 minutes are a better showcase of live action Chief than the entirety of this show.
I still rewatch that movie here of YT from time to time. It was so good.

ME is a more character focused story with a lot of people in the background. I'd be a lot more willing to except character drama in it than I would in Halo.

It would even work was an Unreal 2 show, which was basically bootleg Halo anyway.
The game stories had more emotional depth because the Spartans didn’t show their emotions constantly but through subtle gestures that got the point across.

I would not call any of the halo games having emotional depth(except reach). Its like saying far cry 1 protagonist is an emotional character .

Master Chief and Cortana's relationship developed pretty well, until 343 made it creepy. It wasn't romantic, and it highlighted their character flaws which were primarily responsible for their strength. Chief is a human that operates like a machine; emotionless, pragmatic, driven by results. Cortana is an AI that has developed the yearning to feel, but it too intelligent to understand what it's like to be human.

Something in 4 really stood out for me. Chief was always robotic and Cortana was the personality of the two. According to the games, there’s so much lore and they only used 1%. Love first season of red vs blue!
That's part of why their dynamic is interesting. The AI that isn't a human at all acts like a human and the human that has been so brainwashed and traumatized he acts like a robot.
Halo has one of the densest lore that they didn’t have to adapt the game… and we got this

There's so much they could have pulled from the lore! Hell, if they wanted spartans to be more emotional, they could have used the SIIIs. They're known to be more expressive.
The first mistake was letting paramount to make the show.

My favorite thing about the show is whenever they're on sorans space pirate thing, whenever they have an overview shot of everyone walking around their is one guy on a motorcycle driving in these stupidly cramped places, but my friend and I knew everytime they had a specific shot come up in this place, motorcycle man would drive by
I thought for sure they would mention how the one former spartan kept sayin: "I made a promise to chief to keep you safe". Like every scene he was in after he made that promise, he brought it up
It should have been required ‘homework’ for everyone included in the show to watch all Halo 2 anniversary cutscenes. That alone is a masterpiece that deserves an Oscar

Just saw that a couple of weeks ago. Man the Chief was badass even it was a short 15 minutes clip. And not his actual voice but I enjoyed it a lot. Much better than the whole tv show.

Haven’t watched an honest trailer in so long. This brought back so much nostalgia
The thing with his helmet, is that I understand when took it off when he was in his home base, but in battle grounds? That doesn’t even make sense. Soldiers don’t take their helmets in battle grounds, that’s how you get shot in the head.
Or when they have high-powered rifles pointed directly at their skulls. You'd swear the Spartans had potatoes for brains.
To be fair, it is quite difficult to write characters smarter than yourself.
Yup. It could have been a signal of transition between downtime scenes and fight scenes, in parallel with music which signals that transition (cue the Ominous Horns from Star Trek). It could have emphasized that there ARE some times and places he feels safe... and those could become fewer and fewer, if the story goes into "all territory is enemy territory". It could have even showed that he regrets HAVING to put on the helmet, that he wishes he could be a human more than he's killing machine, but alas, he was designed to be a killing machine and he's not in a situation where an ordinary human can survive.
Reading the first few Halo books, there's quite a bit of mil-sim stuff thrown in which I liked.
Now I want a honest trailer for red vs blue.

I watched all available episodes and enjoyed the show. A bit slow at times but kept me interested, had some great action. Sounds like the key to enjoying Halo series is not having played the full games which I never did, so you aren't annoyed by the changes. Halo got overall positive reviews so I was surprised at all the criticism here.
