You should certainly get yourself a Chotki prayer rope for the 'Jesus Prayer. I was raised Roman Catholic and moved over to the Byzantine Catholic Church in 2004. You can also create an icon corner at home.
“The Lord says to Peter: ‘I say to you,’ he says, ‘that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.’ . . . On him [Peter] he builds the Church, and to him he gives the command to feed the sheep [John 21:17], and although he assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet he founded a single chair [cathedra], and he established by his own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed, the others were that also which Peter was [i.e., apostles], but a primacy is given to Peter, whereby it is made clear that there is but one Church and one chair. So too, all [the apostles] are shepherds, and the flock is shown to be one, fed by all the apostles in single-minded accord. If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?”- St. Cyprian of Carthage (The Unity of the Catholic Church 4; 1st edition [A.D. 251]).

@@richlopez5896 Except, Jesus never said that we are to be solely reliant on Peter. He pointed out the infallibility in Peter saying...and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. While Peter was the rock, he is not the only one we are to look to. If that is the case, Jesus is saying to us follow this corruptible man? No, we are to lean on his teachings, but we are not to look upon him as infallible. (Lumen Gentium, No. 25) St. Peter was the first Apostle among equals. As was the Pope the first Bishop of the Ecumenical council among equals. Until without the knowledge of the East chose a monarchy. (See the letter by Nicetas, Archbishop of Nicomedia written to the pope of that time.) That is not the way the church was set up in the first century. You can plainly see the change when it happened. The Catholic church added when the Orthodox remained to tradition. I have much love for my catholic brothers and sisters, but many are not aware of the history that changed the church from the days of the Apostles. You can also read the Didache (The teachings of the Apostles) written around the 2nd century. No mention under "Church leaders" for a Supreme Bishop, but a plurality of bishops and deacons worthy of the Lord.

But remember, once you return to Him, you must strive to be always faithful to Him, not only in the big things but also in the littlest of things. I discovered the eastern Catholic church while on pilgrimage in Lourdes years ago. There is a beautiful little Ukrainian Catholic church outside the hustle and bustle of the pilgrim area. I attended the liturgy and was overwhelmed by the beauty and solemnity of the liturgy. A very friendly priest told me all I could at that time understand. I've been to the nearest Byzantine Catholic church to where I live (50 miles) a few times but so wish there was a Byzantine or other eastern Catholic church nearer to me as I would probably attend there as often as my Latin rite parish. It's difficult explaining why the Byzantine liturgy and spirituality attracts me so much.
The Jesus prayer I have tried to introduce to my western friends not to replace the Rosary but as well as.

I tought myself a few years ago how to make a chotki (my Playlist I made for that on CZcams is from 2019) and I also watched the tutorial from the christ the bridegroom monastary channel!! It was after visiting Armenia where Orthodoxy is quite common.
Now I'm watching this episodes and after getting recomended the channel from the monastary I saw the connection! This is really interesting and funny to me :D
But I also need to admit, there are not a lot of (video)sources on how to make a chotki, especially because it is named and spelled in a lot of different ways, and I needed a lot of videos to figure it out completely.

Im a Secular Franciscan, Western Rite of course - but NOTHING on earth can stop me using a Chotki and the Jesus Prayer. When everything in my secular life gets too heavy, I may drop out my regular prayer habits (like the full Divine Office .etc) temporarily and just resume the Chotki/Jesus Prayer alone. This I find "empties" my mind and better makes my heart protected and open. Im never going to resume praying the Office or the Rosary, filling my head with lots of powerful imagery, while Im having lots of "viceful and/or sinful" imagery clogging my works. It would be a huge disservice and a "forceful" vain nature in prayer. The Jesus Prayer offers me the emptying of all the stimulation, and just the pure focus on the Holy Name itself and the Mystery of God. Ive always believed that when these situations occur, with an excess of the world becoming too heavy, the utmost Spiritual Warfare is needed - and for me, the Chotki and Jesus Prayer is my daily, and often my sole, weapon of choice in God's name.

I've heard this multiple times that we should actually be praying the rosary in rhythm with our breath. Except no one really shows how to do that. I wonder if its more personal to the person. Like she said she will breath in some sentences and then breath out others. Some people will state a line then breath and state the next line. I'll have to play around with this. But like she said breath work is actually a spiritual practice and even with your own rhythm its more powerful than you've prayed before.

    • @MrMAAAAAAR2123

I breathe in during "Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus." And breathe out during "Sancta Maria, mater Dei ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen" Without pronouncing any of it, of course. The beauty of this rythm lies mainly in the fact, that the breath builds up until it reaches the name of Jesus and then there's a short resting point to (if necessary) direct the focus back on the mystery.

I am Catholic and I pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy with my Rosary beads. Apart from this, sometimes during the day I pray the Jesus prayer without using a prayer rope, just with my mouth or through my head. What I'm wondering is this: Many orthodox priests or monks whose videos I watch on CZcams say that they perform this prayer using chotki/komboskini and that they have multiple prayer ropes ranging from 33 to 300 beads. At the same time, they say that we should pray this prayer continuously throughout the day, from morning to night (referring to the verse "pray without ceasing" in the Bible). If I'm going to do this at any time during the day, then I probably don't need a certain number of prayer rope. But I'm curious about your experiences. Is it more efficient to pray this prayer a certain number of times a day with a prayer rope, or whenever I can do it without using any rope? How do you do it and which one do you get more efficiency from?

Also there is a risk in saying the prayer without realizing. If you get used to this it can happen that you won't be able to fo it otherwise, I mean with focus. Saying without realizing is no a goal. By contrary, we have to be able to focus more and more on the prayer.

@TheMCNanno Ah sorry. I should have realized that. Since it's still not on the website I'd guess you have to go there to get one. I found the complexity of the rosary to be off-putting. I prefer using the Jesus Prayer with a prayer rope (komboskini in Greek) as it is far simpler and more direct.

    • @foreignmilk5589
      @foreignmilk5589 Před 3 měsíci +1

i do both as im non-denominational, but i agree that praying the rosary is complicated. i can never remember the apostles creed. it does seem that the structure of praying the rosary is a bit flexible however, as ive seen many times people adapting it to their spiritual needs. that doesnt even get started on the mysteries tho. i find i really concetrate mostly on the sorrowful mysteries in the spirit of contrition for Jesus' sacrifice for our sins. its worth it, but it is a lot and i do appreciate the beautiful simplicity of praying the knots of an orthodox rope.

I will just like to drop this here.
For those who are seeking Traditional Catholicism, the Eastern Catholic Church is not traditional and they are as modern as the Western Church regardless if their Mass didn’t change much.
Now why do I say this? I say this because if you look at the life of the Eastern Catholic life before Vatican II, they prayed the Rosary as well as the Western Church. Mary didn’t appear in Fatima for only Western Catholics. So to downplay the necessity of the Rosary or put it on the same level as the Jesus Prayer isn’t what Eastern Catholics did before Vatican II. One can only do this by disregarding almost all the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Just check out the Marian apparition in Hrushiv Ukraine where Mary said to supposedly Eastern Catholics in 1987; “Say the Rosary. It is the weapon against Satan. He fears the Rosary. Recite the Rosary at any gathering of people”
Mary said at every apparition at Fatima, “Pray the Rosary everyday”. So for Catholics to ignore this for the sake of obsessing keeping their Eastern Traditions is by far imprudent.
I’ve been seriously considering the Eastern Catholic Church but seeing everyday how poor their devotion to Mary is, is just discouraging.
The Eastern Catholic Church is as Novus Ordo as the West.
There are Traditional Eastern Catholics who are Traditional, and attached to the SSPX, but they are in Ukraine and it isn’t seeming like they are trying to move to another country anytime soon. They are the Priestly Society of St. Josephat.
