It actually took inspiration from Sanremo, a musical festival in Italy which still exists. In fact, in Italy those who manage to win Sanremo can then decide whether or not they want to participate to Eurovision. For example Maneskin this year won Sanremo, so then they participated to Eurovision (and won again ahah)😍🔝✌🏻

"The saxophones remind me of Macklemore." Oh boy. You don't know the epic sax guy. One of Eurovisions finest.
Basically whenever a song that uses a certain instrument a lot wins, in the years after you'll see a lot of that instrument. When Alexander Rybak won with "Fairytale" and lots of violins there were so many violins in the years after. Then came the epic sax guy. You actually probably know his solo from his first ESC performance, it's a meme. After that, saxophones got reeeeally popular, especially since he returned a few years ago with another banger. So yeah, there's a pretty deep history behind the musical choices made here.

From what I know about the selection of the artist: some countries have a national competition to decide who is gonna represent the country, and then also some countries just have their 'organisation' invite famous singers from that country to write a song and perform, and then some countries have a group of 'experts' who just choose the best song from a list of unknown singers. In those last two cases, the general public doesn't have a say in the performance :)

I am very grateful that the general public in my country has no say whatsoever in what send to Eurovision, we apparently have apalling taste based on the entries we sent for years when there was still a National Final. Luckily there is now a selection committee that consists of people from the music business (that includes artists, songwriters, producers, radio programmers, record companies etc.) and since they took over and they apparently formulated a certain strategy we have been sending quality songs which eventually led us to winning the contest in 2019.

Eurovision isn't a singing competition, it's a song contest. The point is supposed to be "choose the best song" but tbh over the years stage production and concept has he one a huge thing too. For example, i think part of why UK and Germany did so bad this year was because their staging and stage presence was bad. Germany's song was quirky and so was their staging, but it was kind of camp bordering on annoying, so people were turned off. UK had the most average song ever, and then a stage show that included a slightly bored looking man bouncing with two giant trumpets in the back. Very much not exciting for eurovision, resulted in 0 points. On the other hand, you have Switzerland with a captivating staging of a metaphorical explosion, France with the most simple yet most impactful, Ukraine bringing in spring and future vibes, Iceland with their memorable meme dance and then Finland and Italy basically made eurovision their private concert. It's a song contest, but you judge the whole package absolutely. The singing, the performance, the staging and the song. If it was purely the sing, Switzerland should've won because that was undoubtedly the most technically impressive. But these half naked sweaty Italians got people's attention 😜

The "half naked sweaty italians" are the most streamed italians right now and dominating Europe's charts. They included and spoke directly to the audience and made them feel like a part of their performance. It is still funny how some people still judge them for their looks (clothes, make up,...)
First of all that's what Europe wants to see and that's for who we voted/called for. Secondly we live in 2021 and diversity of each indovidual should be accepted and also respected instead of making jokes about them.
For me personally, I'm listening to their Songs since last saturday and I hope it's the beginning of their journey. I started informing myself about the group, the lyrics and their past and that's quite impressive! 💗 They totally deserved to win even though Switzerland was my 2nd favourite!

So you know, what happens in the contest is that every country that takes part selects a song (each country has their own way to do that), but it must be something that hasn't released before the year the contest is going to take part.
Then, during the actual contest, each country has a jury and a televote to rank all the songs (minus the song from their own country), and award points to their top 10 list. They give the song in 10th place 1 point, 2 points to 9th and so on until 3rd place, then 10 points to second place and 12 points to their first place (one set of points for the jury and one set of points from the televote). The country that gets the most points once all the countries award their points wins.
You should check out some of the older entries (it's been going since the 1950's). There are some huge names that came out of Eurovision. In particular, ABBA and Celine Dion got their mayor breaks because they won it.

In the past the most ridiculous performances where staged and sometimes even won. But this year the final is actually decent, might actually watch it for a change.

I'm so glad I've been blessed to be born and raised in Europe with such beautiful cultural ancestry and musical diversity. I do not want to get anyone offended but I feel like the U.S. and Canada , if North American version of Eurovision existed, would have only one style of music enter, the Ariana Grandes and Beyonces of the world. Nothing against that type of music, I too frequently listen to it, but I just find more richness in other genres. All this to say, even if it was not written in the title, I would have guessed an American was reacting to the songs because of the ones he predominantly liked. Just an observation, nothing less, nothing more, this comment is not a call to a fight in the comment section. Nothing is either better or worse in this world, we all have our preferences. Thanks. Much love to everyone.

It borders Iran and it’s a country with Turkic roots, so it borrows musical influences from both. Many traditional musical styles of countries across this region sound like this.

That said, Eurovision has got a lot more professional, polished and radio-friendly in the last decade.

Kudos to you for actually taking the time to listen, even a bit, for all of the 39 songs! I am a huge Eurovision fan myself, and find it exhausting listening all of them at once.
I don't know if you have paid any attention to the actual Grande Finale of this competition, but it took place few days ago, and the winner was Italy - yes, the glam-rock band! You picked up the top contestants quite well, and MAN am I glad you liked MY HOMIES BLIND CHANNEL FROM FINLAND!!! Big smile on my face every time they pop up and people just sort of wake up. That was the punkish nu-metal rock piece right about in the middle. They took the 6th place at the finals, which is the second best position Finland has ever reached (we won once, 2006, wth Lordi, also a rock band).
You also pointed out Switzerland - the video with the car crash and mountains. The competiton was tight, but Italy won, followed by France and Switzerland. Not all of these songs made it to the final, it had 27 songs that made it through. It was a great show. It is hard to describe to americans; it is a cultural thing - Eurovision is actually not "the best" of every country - it's more about the new artists and bands from each country, but it is a competition, of course, and sometimes it is a stepping stone for the winners. Remember, Abba won the Eurovision and they ended up pretty big :) But mostly it is about kitch, costumes, pyros and wind machines, the overall show and some of the cheesiest ballads & weirdest dance moves that anyone could come up with. It is a blast, a ball, the biggest party on the old continent. We love it. Glad you took a sneak peak. Now GO AND WATCH THE WINNERS SHOW! Did I mention that the winners, Måneskin, have done a cover of Harry Styles' "Kiwi", and named him one of their biggest influences? I have no choice but stan.
(Also, it was hilarious when you immediately said "Is that PewDiePie?", bc that's the first thing everyone has been saying about Jendrik..)

The atmosphere is very Olympics. Popular Vote in each country for other countries's song. All in one week. Europe watches Eurovision every night and votes.
