It wasn't mentioned in this video, but the original reason for the ESC was togetherness not competitiveness. The European powers wanted a fun way to get people to like each other again after WW2. That's part of why this is such a spectacle with so little lasting controversy. It's not really about whether or not your country wins, it's about all these groups touring Europe and doing a big show together.

    • @pok81

@@WookieWarriorz Well what I was saying was there was a time in Eurovision history when they had to sing in their own language...Namely 1966-1973 and 1977-1999. Sadly I am not in charge of the song contest and can't do anything about Ireland singing in Irish. They have always sung in English, as far as I know, as 98% of the country speak English and have done since the eighteenth century, even though both Irish and English have official language status. I would say that it is probably up to Ireland to choose what language they sing in, as I don't have any say in the matter, but they probably choose English over Irish for the above reasons I have stated but could if they so wish, sing in Irish if they wanted regardless of what the rules of the song contest state at the time of entry. If you feel strongly about this subject matter, I would suggest starting up a petition seeing what the Irish people's feelings are about it. You never know, maybe the Irish people might wish for their next entrant's song to be sung in Irish and not English.

Contrary to popular belief, the Eurovision Song Contest is NOT just for Europe. It gets its name from Eurovision, the television company that created it in the 1950s. Entry to the contest is for any FULL member of the European Broadcasting Union and ASSOCiATE members thereof. This means that apart from European countries, it is ALSO open to ALL African countries along the Mediterranean coast (and much of the rest of Africa,) much of Asia (including China and Japan,) New Zealand and Australia, much of South America and even Canada and the US. Basically, almost 2/3 of the countries in the world COULD take part if they so chose to do - most do not because of the cost of entering and the cost of hosting should they win.

Will Ferrell's 'Eurovision 2020: The Story of Fire Saga' is a great film.
It's well-observed, treats the subject (and Iceland) very fondly, and there are lots of cameos from past winners.
Serendipitously/ironically, Eurovision was cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020.
I'm expecting Israel to do poorly this year, if they even enter.

  • @rjb29uk

The best thing about Eurovision is the gentle mocking of each countries songs, and or intro videos by our UK host on VO. It used to be the late, great broadcaster Terry Wogan (Irish) and now we have Graham Norton, also Irish, who is a perfect successor, also gently mocking of any entries that deserve a light mockery. Nothing offensive, just calling out weirdness, like "this man seems to be stuck in a spiders web, seems like a very unfortunate situation to be in, but what do I know". But he gives credit where it's due for a good song/staging/performance.

You are not allowed to vote for your own country. Mostly the country that wins host next years contest unless they choose not to if they for example can't affort it(Israel won 2 years in a row in 1978 and 1979 but couldn't affort to host in 1980 so The Netherlands did instead) and if the EBU decide like with Ukraine in 2023 where for safety reasons because of the war the 2nd place from 2022 The UK held the contest but chose to co-host with Ukraine in Liverpool, so it was both english and ukrainian hosts and both english and ukrainian interval acts(acts performing when the voting takes place/the voting is counted). The countries to win the most is sweden(won their 7th time in 2023)and ireland who have also won 7 times, and the 2nd place joined is UK, The Netherlands, France and Luxembourg I think with 5 wins, 3rd Israel with 4 wins, and 4th is Norway, Italy, Ukraine, and my country Denmark to have won 3 times.

First of all, DO NOT WATCH THE EUROVISION FILM!! It is the worst movie I've ever seen in my life (and I've seen the Stepford wives remake).
I LOVE Eurovision. I watch it with my mum every year. We get a takeaway, plenty of munch and score each country out of 10 and write a piss take comment about each performance.
I wish that countries would sing in their native languages again though. I wouldn't be able to understand them but I'd appreciate it more.
I love the quirky songs. I still sing "before that wolf eats your grandma give the wolf a banana" quite often.
I didn't rank Loreen's tattoo winning song much last year but I absolutely love it now (thanks to Layton and Nikita dancing to it on strictly).

And of course... making reference to America needing to make a version without realising they already have.
And as with everything else they copy, they sucked the life out of it and made it bad.

The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual song contest organized by the European Broadcasting Union EBU. In which all EBU members can participate. The Israeli public broadcasting company is a full member of the EBU, which gives it the right to participate in the competition. Associate members of the EBU are e.g. Australia, China, India, USA and Canada. I don't know why out of the associate members only Australia participates in the competitions.

Some acts who didn't win, went on be one hit wonders, because their songs were so unusual.
The biggest controversy of the Eurovision Song Contest was Spain under Franco cheating to win, the year Cliff Richard competed with Congratulations. The winning song from Spain was only a minor hit, but Congratulations written by two well known British pop song writers of that era, became such a big international hit, that was so big, those greetings cards with sound chips in play it.
One of the years that Ireland hosted the show, after winning the contest the year before, featured the first television appearance of Riverdance, as a showcase act, that is the stage entertainment, but not in the competition.

Sweden won the contest he was talking about, last year, and the UK came a respectable 25th out of 25. Terrible song. We've heard 20 seconds of this years and it's . . . better. Dance track, not really my thing. Fully released tomorrow, I believe.
Actually, now I have the stage, I have to say that I don't like that the songs are all released ahead of time. Some are huge hits before we ever get to the contest. I think the first time we hear them should be on the night. But that's why I'm not the head of a major music company, I guess.
Anyway, the best bit is as it always was, the voting.

Fun fact: Have you ever heard of Riverdance? An Irish dance troupe that was a huge, world-wide success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They had their big break in 1994, when Ireland hosted Eurovision AGAIN in Dublin. They gave a 7-minute performance during the interval, after all the songs had been performed and voting was going on. Nobody really remembers the winning song or artist, but Riverdance was an absolute sensation!

Eurovision has become so popular that other version were created. There's one only for dancers, one for musicians and the most popular one is Eurovision junior where the contestants are kids. The age limit is 16 years old. That's also the age limit for Eurovision. I think there was a controversy back in the 80's when a girl won and she was only 13 but I think she lied saying she was older. I think they implemented the age restriction after that. Because if there's a cute kid of course you'll want to vote for them right?

The basis of the Eurovision Song Contest is
    the European Broadcast Union
which is an alliance of public broadcasters in
    the European Broadcasting Area
(which includes non-European areas - like
those bordering on the Mediterranean and
    as far east as Azerbaijan.
One of the jobs of the EBU is to provide
    television feed between countries
    so for many many years
there was a satellite dish on the West Bank
which fed Israel and Jordan with television signals
even though they were at war the cables were not cut!
Eurovision is a style of its own
so saying that's very Eurovision puts it in a niche
but it has been going for 78 years!
It is worth having a look at the compilations of
    the winners over the years
    (and the second placed too)
They tell you a great deal about a slice of European culture.

it really annoys me big time when they get one major rule wrong. The winning country DOES NOT have to host the following year. Yes it is traditional and the winning country will alway be offered it first. They sitted the 'Moustashe' song as an example of a troll entry and yes it was bad. But it was entered by France a country who could easily afford hosting and would love to win and host as their last win was way back in 1977. They nearly did so in 2021. Also Sweden hosting this year is very fitting as it is 50 years since their first win with ABBA and Waterloo.
