    My Mother wrote a letter to John Wayne's fan club for me in that year of 1969 at the age of 9 told him how much I enjoyed his films, but this one True Grit was the best of the best and he sent back a autograph photo of him and one of his horses I will always have fond memories of it and when my parents took me to see this epic western adventure with all its cinematic photography and beautiful landscape. And Rooster Cogburn one eye drinking tough as hell sheriff . Without doubt the Dukes best.

    What the creators of the new True Grit fail to understand is that realism is no substitute for idealism and beauty, which was this film.

    On this day in 1969 {June 11th} the John Wayne & Glen Campbell movie "True Grit" had its world premier
    And exactly ten years later on June 11th, 1979 John Wayne passed away at the age of 72
    The film garnered two Academy Awards nominations; for Best Actor {which John Wayne won} & for Best Original Song {for the title song, lost to "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"}
    Glen Campbell sang the title song; it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on July 26th & eventually it peaked at #35

    In an interview years ago, I remember Mr. Bernstein saying something to the effect of loving to write music for John Wayne's movies as he could just open it up and be big and bold. At 1:07 on the video, I have a picture of me sitting right there against that rock where John Wayne was at Owl Creek Pass with the Cimmarons in the background. In fact, I've been to every filming location in Colorado for this movie.

    If I'm not mistaken, Bernstein studied for a time under Aaron Copland (noted composer of such 'Americana' ballets as "Billy the Kid" and "Appalachian Spring" - for which he purpose sought out the melodic tropes of American folk music) - Bernstein carries on with these musical ideas creates a handful of themes so iconic (this and 'Magnificent Seven') they seem to have ALWAYS existed but yet function as a fulcrum: all Western themes before "7" seem to be yearning to achieve its perfection, all others after to ironize, fight against (aesthetically) or recapture its glory. Check out Bernstein's theme for "The Scalphunters": Dodge City meets the Whiskey A-Go-Go - you'd swear he is being tongue in cheek about his own success as the master of the Western theme!

      +Autostade67 Not only did "Bernstein West" study under Copland, but he occasionally wrote homages to Copland into his music. I know of at least two: The scene from To Kill a Mockingbird, in which the kids are at the Radley house, and the sister climbs into a big, old truck or tractor tire, and the long version of Bernstein's National Geographic theme.

    John Wayne was never a great actor. All his movies, John Wayne played John Wayne. He did nothing to earn an oscar for this.
    However, what really got me was the "Great Patriot" comment. John Wayne never served in WWII, even though he could have. He was a white supremacy, help started the John Birch society, he took part and help Sen. Mccarthy with his witch hunt.
    While I enjoy most of his movies, I'm not blinded by them as to what John Wayne was like in "real life".
