I remember Glen catching so much Hell for his "pretty" hair back in the day. He and John Wayne were great in True Grit. Glen's unpolished acting skills actually made his part more believable. Great movie and great memories Glen. God Bless.

Only a handful of other screen legends have been able to do that, and they are all giants just as Wayne himself was, people like Bogart, Cooper, Connery, Ford, Eastwood, Bronson and a few others.

The on-screen chemistry between Cogburn, La Boeuf, and Matty Ross is the centerpiece of the 1969 version of "True Grit," and one of the things which makes the film so wonderful. Glenn Campbell did a bang-up job as an actor, especially since he was a newcomer to the field, and his music added much to the film as well. I saw "True Grit" when it first came out - I was eight years old at the time - and the song by that name and the film have remained indelibly joined in memory for all of those years down to today. The more-recent version of the story, done in the Jeff Bridges film of 2010, with due respects, just does not measure up.... despite being truer to the Charles Portis novel.
John Wayne may have gotten the movie award, but Glen Campbell got his one and only music award for the song True Grit (Some day little Girl).......... I think for not being an actor, Glen really held his own, and is one of my favorite John Wayne movies with the best music score ever.

To this day The Duke is still in Top 10. In a recent poll of most popular movie stars past and present. The Duke placed 7th. Not bad for a guy who's been gone 38 years.
I still remember the day he passed, he was a great American, regular guy, met him once friends father worked on a couple movies with him, totally an amazing guy.

One thing people seldom talk about. Glen was an absolute wizard on guitar. The opening riff of Southern Nights is so damn hard to play and he just soars through it.
Tommy Petersen Glen played the lead guitar riffs on "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys too. Toured with them also, playing just off stage where you'd only see his head! Glen was a very sought-after guitarist, who played on many albums for many artists.
He was a member of "The Wrecking Crew" along with Leon Russell and many others. At one point in the 1960's they played on just about every recorded song released then taught the band members how to play them. It was done because it was faster and easier. They were recording professionals.

Since we're talking about True Grit, I'd like to cite the talents of Strother Martin. Most of his roles were short, but he never failed to deliver (Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Up In Smoke).
He did his best, but there was no way he was gonna come out on top in those negotiations with Maddie...especially since she always kept Lawyer Daggett at the ready.
I saw True Grit when I was 6 years old in the movie theater. My grandmother took me to see it. She loved The Duke and that movie made me love the Duke too. We also loved Glen Campbell. We would love watching his Goodtime Hour. He was very popular in those days and he had a bunch of hits they would play on the radio too. He was a good looking guy to boot. We loved Glen Campbell’s performance in True Grit. I hated the part when he got killed in the movie trying to save Rooster and the girl from the snakes in the pit. I remember, my grandmother bought the Glen Campbell theme song to True Grit. That was a big hit and it was selling like hot cakes on the small 45 labels. Glen was a great guy and we loved him. I recently saw his movie with his wife and kids. My heart goes out to his family. It was sad watching the movie and I felt sad for his family. It’s a shame how old age takes us all. I have so many good memories growing up in the late 60’s and 70’s. Now a days, Glen, John Wayne and even my grandparents are all gone. But the wonderful memories stay with me of the good times I had growing up in a time when the music was really good, we had really good actors like John Wayne back then, I know people will say when we think of our childhood, we have rose colored glasses on. There were problems with the Vietnam war going on, but when your a kid, you don’t understand all that and you only have good memories of your family and your childhood. Without getting to sentimental, I would say that for me, the 70’s were a better time because the Great generation of World War 2, my grandparents were alive back then in their 50’s. They made growing up much better. Their ethics, traditions and down right guts made a great impression on me. Today, kids don’t have role models like John Wayne, the music today actually is toxic on the kids; and they don’t even realize it. They grow up confused not even clearly understanding the gender roles of either sex. A once great country that we had is slowly demoralized and is imploding from within. We have lost our way and I blame the media for that demoralization. Liberalism has systematically destroyed a once great & powerful country. Check out on You Tube, KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov warning to America. It’s true. I’m not too heavy on religion but the first thing the media and liberals try to attack is religion. After that, they chip away at everything else down to manhood all the way to breaking up the family. It takes a few generations but slowly but surely, the nucleus of the family is gone. That is the backbone of a country. They have destroyed the black families with welfare. Need I say more. Take a look at the progression from 1950 to now. Research it yourself and reach your own conclusions.
One of the kids came across a John Wayne lamp at a yard sale. She asked how much it was and the lady said free if you get that thing out of here. She gave it to me for my birthday, asking if I didn't like it to just throw it away. I treasure it to this day.

So I'm watching this clip and I hear Glen Campbell's voice singing and I start tearing up remembering the seventies that voice is just so synonymous with my past and growing up just kind of caught me off guard
I was 5 years old on a plane riding back home when this old man starting looking and making funny faces and noises at me. Had no idea who he was but my dad did, it was Glenn! I wish I could go back in time and talk to him. He ended up giving me a guitar pick too. Man I miss him..
Glen spoke from the heart. He recognized a true movie icon and appreciated having the opportunity to work with John Wayne. Glen's humility makes him a legend.

I have been right where True Grit was made, in and around Ridgway, Colorado. One of the most beautiful mountainous areas, surely, in the country. We painted pictures of the mountains for two weeks. Have you ever noticed that John Wayne seems to have made a point of doing his movies in beautiful places of the West like that?

Glen Campbell caught so much grief for his performance in this film but I thought his performance was just fine. I think a lot of that came from actors who resented the hell out of a novice actor being chosen for the part over someone with more experience.
I agree. Glen Campbell looked ok to me as an actor. And Duke knew his chops. It's not hard to act. Just get out there and do it. And have those guys behind the cameras make sure you can read your lines.
Reputedly Elvis was considered for the part of the Texas Ranger that Glen played in True Grit. Imagine that. The Duke & The King appearing in a western classic movie together.
I was watching the Oscar awards the night that John Wayne won for True Grit. He was a presenter early on in the proceedings, and he concluded by saying, "If I don't see you later tonight, then I'll see you at the movies." Having enjoyed the book and looked and re-looked at Glen Campbell's performance, I say that he was great in the role. The only other person I'd even consider to play the Texan is L.Q. Jones.
Glen likes to put himself down about his acting in interviews about True Grit. I think he did a good job in his role. And he certainly is nice to look at.
Saw some of the locations they shot True Grit while living in Colorado. Ridgway, Owl Creek Pass and Last Dollar Road where the Ross ranch house stands. Loved going off-roading in the mountains.
I spend a lot of my life driving around Campbell country in NW Scotland listening to Glen Campbell....somehow it feels right...maybe that is where he feels he belongs. A truly great guy.
I loved Glen Campbell and the entire 1969 cast in TG. That he died in the film was very sad. Interesting how allegiances between the 3 changed when Kim Darby (Mattie) tended to GC's injured hand and showed care. She continued to direct the care when they arrived with the 4 bodies in tow. Insisted the 'Indian' wash his hands before touching GC's hand. The comedic touches definitely lightened the tone of the movie. General Sterling Price was a definite positive asset. Enjoy seeing this film from time to time. In the 2010 TG film the GC character lives and an older Mattie does bury Cogburn in her family plot. I prefer this ending, but it's missing the 3 main characters of the original film. Can't have it all even in the movies.
People seem to think all the guitar greats are in Rock music but that is not true. Campbell was great friends with Alice Cooper and Eddie Van Halen knew this and asked Alice to hook him up to met Glen so he could pick his brain. Would have loved to watch that meeting! Country music had lots of guitar greats like Roy Clark and Chet Atkins and they could easily play rock if they wanted to.
It amazes me how quickly this disease progresses. with in a relatively short time he was incapacitated. I was not a huge fan, but you could not help but be impressed by his long career.
For having never acted, Glenn Campbell did a hell of a job in True Grit

Well said. I like all the actors in the new version but it lacked a great deal.
Wayne wanted Karen Carpenter to play Matty Ross, but producers rejected his request. Wayne did not get along with Kim Darby.
Campbell could not act and he ruined the film.

@@morganlewis2667 Well, I cannot argue being faithful to your spouse...but, did it ever occur to you that he tried to join the military during WW2, but he was denied? I am not saying it is a fact, but don't you find it strange that they never put him in a uniform when nearly everyone was in one at that time? I still think that he had some kind of embarrassing medical condition that kept him out and it was better for him to be labeled a coward by folks like you, than to admit that he had something physically wrong. Makes a lot more sense than just "sidestepping WW2". Maybe it will come out one day.

Since we're talking about True Grit, I'd like to cite the talents of Strother Martin. Most of his roles were short, but he never failed to deliver (Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Up In Smoke).
He did his best, but there was no way he was gonna come out on top in those negotiations with Maddie...especially since she always kept Lawyer Daggett at the ready.

I saw True Grit when I was 6 years old in the movie theater. My grandmother took me to see it. She loved The Duke and that movie made me love the Duke too. We also loved Glen Campbell. We would love watching his Goodtime Hour. He was very popular in those days and he had a bunch of hits they would play on the radio too. He was a good looking guy to boot. We loved Glen Campbell’s performance in True Grit. I hated the part when he got killed in the movie trying to save Rooster and the girl from the snakes in the pit. I remember, my grandmother bought the Glen Campbell theme song to True Grit. That was a big hit and it was selling like hot cakes on the small 45 labels. Glen was a great guy and we loved him. I recently saw his movie with his wife and kids. My heart goes out to his family. It was sad watching the movie and I felt sad for his family. It’s a shame how old age takes us all. I have so many good memories growing up in the late 60’s and 70’s. Now a days, Glen, John Wayne and even my grandparents are all gone. But the wonderful memories stay with me of the good times I had growing up in a time when the music was really good, we had really good actors like John Wayne back then, I know people will say when we think of our childhood, we have rose colored glasses on. There were problems with the Vietnam war going on, but when your a kid, you don’t understand all that and you only have good memories of your family and your childhood. Without getting to sentimental, I would say that for me, the 70’s were a better time because the Great generation of World War 2, my grandparents were alive back then in their 50’s. They made growing up much better. Their ethics, traditions and down right guts made a great impression on me. Today, kids don’t have role models like John Wayne, the music today actually is toxic on the kids; and they don’t even realize it. They grow up confused not even clearly understanding the gender roles of either sex. A once great country that we had is slowly demoralized and is imploding from within. We have lost our way and I blame the media for that demoralization. Liberalism has systematically destroyed a once great & powerful country. Check out on You Tube, KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov warning to America. It’s true. I’m not too heavy on religion but the first thing the media and liberals try to attack is religion. After that, they chip away at everything else down to manhood all the way to breaking up the family. It takes a few generations but slowly but surely, the nucleus of the family is gone. That is the backbone of a country. They have destroyed the black families with welfare. Need I say more. Take a look at the progression from 1950 to now. Research it yourself and reach your own conclusions.
Unlike the rest of the internet world, I love both versions of True Grit.
Such an humble, and underrated man. And a top musician. I miss you Glen and regret I never got to meet you.

One of the kids came across a John Wayne lamp at a yard sale. She asked how much it was and the lady said free if you get that thing out of here. She gave it to me for my birthday, asking if I didn't like it to just throw it away. I treasure it to this day.

So I'm watching this clip and I hear Glen Campbell's voice singing and I start tearing up remembering the seventies that voice is just so synonymous with my past and growing up just kind of caught me off guard

I was 5 years old on a plane riding back home when this old man starting looking and making funny faces and noises at me. Had no idea who he was but my dad did, it was Glenn! I wish I could go back in time and talk to him. He ended up giving me a guitar pick too. Man I miss him..

Well singing is acting, in a way, so he had a head start over most people in their first role.
I have been right where True Grit was made, in and around Ridgway, Colorado. One of the most beautiful mountainous areas, surely, in the country. We painted pictures of the mountains for two weeks. Have you ever noticed that John Wayne seems to have made a point of doing his movies in beautiful places of the West like that?
Hal Bennett ... yes, but did he not get his cancer from location shoots where nuclear testing was done? Beautiful and dangerous land stolen from the natives?

He probably got that from John Ford, who was a wizard at shooting in beautiful locations and making them a breathtaking part of the film.
Glen Campbell caught so much grief for his performance in this film but I thought his performance was just fine.
I think a lot of that came from actors who resented the hell out of a novice actor being chosen for the part over someone with more experience.
The Duke made the right choice.
I agree. Glen Campbell looked ok to me as an actor. And Duke knew his chops. It's not hard to act. Just get out there and do it. And have those guys behind the cameras make sure you can read your lines.

I was watching the Oscar awards the night that John Wayne won for True Grit. He was a presenter early on in the proceedings, and he concluded by saying, "If I don't see you later tonight, then I'll see you at the movies." Having enjoyed the book and looked and re-looked at Glen Campbell's performance, I say that he was great in the role. The only other person I'd even consider to play the Texan is L.Q. Jones.

Saw some of the locations they shot True Grit while living in Colorado. Ridgway, Owl Creek Pass and Last Dollar Road where the Ross ranch house stands. Loved going off-roading in the mountains.
I spend a lot of my life driving around Campbell country in NW Scotland listening to Glen Campbell....somehow it feels right...maybe that is where he feels he belongs. A truly great guy.
Hell of a movie. Everyone in it was excellent and the young lady was out of this world. She was years beyond her age with her performance...

I loved Glen Campbell and the entire 1969 cast in TG. That he died in the film was very sad. Interesting how allegiances between the 3 changed when Kim Darby (Mattie) tended to GC's injured hand and showed care. She continued to direct the care when they arrived with the 4 bodies in tow. Insisted the 'Indian' wash his hands before touching GC's hand. The comedic touches definitely lightened the tone of the movie. General Sterling Price was a definite positive asset. Enjoy seeing this film from time to time. In the 2010 TG film the GC character lives and an older Mattie does bury Cogburn in her family plot. I prefer this ending, but it's missing the 3 main characters of the original film. Can't have it all even in the movies.

People seem to think all the guitar greats are in Rock music but that is not true. Campbell was great friends with Alice Cooper and Eddie Van Halen knew this and asked Alice to hook him up to met Glen so he could pick his brain. Would have loved to watch that meeting! Country music had lots of guitar greats like Roy Clark and Chet Atkins and they could easily play rock if they wanted to.

I was there at the tribute, it was very special. They played this video and a few others, plus a lot of other actors from his movies were there.
It amazes me how quickly this disease progresses. with in a relatively short time he was incapacitated. I was not a huge fan, but you could not help but be impressed by his long career.
I think the doctors help to worsen the disease more quickly. The medicine (mostly poisons) they prescribe rely on our compliance.
