The Booze-Fueled Plan to End the Pokemon Anime | Takeshi Shudo's Story | Gnoggin

  • Takeshi Shudo, lead writer of the Pokemon Anime and first three Pokemon movies, had a plan to end the series all together. A few actually. In some recently translated blog posts, he revealed that much of his writing for the franchise was done under the influence. This likely then also fueled his plan for the end of Pokemon. Let's talk about this.

    As someone who writes every now and then, I understand this man's pain. Every story - _every_ story - has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and all of those are equally important. Often, the ending of a story is the first thing that I'll think of, and I'll write the rest of the story to it. And to effectively told that your story will have no end, by an executive who doesn't understand these characters, understand their arcs, even understand the themes of the story, who only understands that Pokemon = money...it'd be enough to turn me to alcoholism too.
    Edit: On reading the comments, I realized the perfect metaphor for this - the fact that Ash stays ten. This man wanted Ash to grow, to evolve, to change. He wanted to make a story, and that story would end with him realizing how far he'd come. But the higher-ups couldn't even let him grow enough to...well, grow. Even his age has to stay the same, over year's and year's worth of episodes. I can't even imagine how frustrating that must be.

    • @joshima7
      @joshima7 Před 4 lety +105

      The worst part about this is how everyone in the comments are just glad that it hasn't ended and want it to continue. Every story needs to end at some point if not it will become boring, stale, full of repetition and worst of all the characters don't grow or change. And Pokemon definitely has become boring and uninteresting

      As someone who writes too, I feel you. If they really did want keep Ash for so long, I think a good place to have him pass on the torch would be Sinnoh. Ash gets to stay for a long time, but not too long to the point where he basically becomes the autopilot for the vehicle of whatever gimmick the execs want to push. And I think it would go like this: After Ash's adventures across the four regions he's been across, he begins to look out to the world beyond and sees just how big it is and how small he and Pikachu are compared to it. They've come a long way, but Ash begins to wonder if instead of being a Pokémon Master, he wants to see the world and learn if it's even possible to become a Pokémon Master. After all, by that point, it seems that he travels thousands of miles only to find he hasn't gone anywhere. Pikachu senses something's wrong, but Ash tells him it's nothing to worry about. The next day, Ash and co. come across someone who's just like Ash when he started on his adventure. A young man by the name of Go (a placeholder because I couldn't think of anything else). Everyone learns that Go wants to make as many friends as he can with both people and Pokémon and learn what it means to share the world they share. Pikachu warms up to Go, and Ash feels that maybe his journey is one he should make alone. So he finally comes out and tells everyone what he's been thinking. This floors everyone, Pikachu especially. After all, he and Ash had been through too much already to just give up now. They try to convince Ash to come back to his senses, but his mind was made up. Besides, he wasn't giving up on his dream. He was looking to see what else he can do to be the very best like no one ever was. Before he leaves, he makes one last promise to Pikachu: one day, they'll meet again where they first met, at Professor Oak's lab. In the mean time, all Ash wants Pikachu to do is watch over Go. The two lifelong friends finally part ways, thus concluding one saga and beginning the next starting with Go's adventure in Unova.

      The Four Star Gamer It’s not because they cut the National Dex, that was inevitable at some point. It’s *why* they supposedly did it. GF said they were cutting the National Dex so that they could focus on higher quality animations, as well as focus on making a higher quality game. Well, that was a huge lie as it has been proven that they used the same animations from the 3DS, but somehow downgraded them even more. The animations are the worst they’ve ever been. The gameplay and mechanics in general suffer the same fate.
      Games from almost 20 years ago look better in every way, except graphically (debatable). Arguably, many things in Gen 8 are either poorly executed and rushed (wild area) or broken (exp system and exp candies). That’s why people are upset: they were lied to.

      @@fivefoxesinatrenchcoat1744 i personally think its perspective. For many hardcore fans now, DPPt were the hardest games and as such, the most loved (nostalgia's a bitch), as they were the latest at that time. People just getting into SwSh and pokemon in general have stated that the game is harder. I agree that the animation bit was a bogus lie, but they probably just wanted some reason other then "man, animating the same pikachu model for each game is getting boring. And i have to animated 800 more... I wish we could just cut half the dex.." and so, they did. I don't think anyone truely believed that they could keep it up. IMO, while cutting pokemon may have been a ploy to justify DLC, it also could help. Game Freak has the animators working like dogs. They get minimum pay. But the fandom also follows them like dogs. Sure, we had the people boycotting for nat dex, claiming that they will never buy a pokemon game again, but I'd bet they still did.

    I used to watch the Pokemon series all the time, back in elementary and middle school school, I remember watching Pokemon Black and White before heading off to school. My dad never really like the anime much and seemed to hate it for some reason, even though I remember him having the game on his old game-boy. I never knew why he didn't like the anime, but liked the game and I kind of understand why since I am starting to not like the anime.
    The anime feels kind of dull with the same protagonist that seems to never grow up and I wish we could get a new protagonist already. I understand that Ash is well liked in the community, but I feel like it could really grab the attention of younger and older audience if we have a new protagonist which give the series a fresh start. You can ask a lot of Poketubers if they have even watched the sun and moon series who are theorists and you can hear that they have not really care about about the anime much or haven't had the time or the want to watch the series. I watched up around the third season of the sun and moon series and got bored of it. I realized that the episodes I particularly liked were the ones without Ash being much involve in it and finding myself happy whenever he wasn't the main focus of the episode, instead focusing on the other characters. Also, the part where Ash beat Hau left a sour taste in my mouth since it was such a stupid reason and a poorly executed plot twist. Then you remember that Hau wanted to win and beat his gramps to prove himself to his dad that didn't live on Alola.
    I don't know how they could introduce a new protagonist but I feel like they need to retire Ash and get a new protagonist and possibly a new pokemon for that new protagonist? Unlikely but would be a nice extra bonus, since I am tired of seeing that rat everywhere...

    I think Shudo would be proud to see Ash's journey finally come to an end after all of these years. I think the series after Journeys will likely be able to fulfill his dying wish of a new series with a new protagonist.

    When it comes to how stories end, there is no real way to be completely satisfied with it. If the story ends, you long for it to go on. If the story keeps going, you’ll wish for it to be put to rest. There is no way to be completely happy with the ending of a story or series. While the story is still going, but hasn’t been going so long you want it to end, you’re floating in a happy limbo.
    Because one day, you’ll be hit with either the fed up exhaustion, or the crushing unhappiness, of the story either being beaten like a dead horse, or ending before you were satisfied. Some series’s are lucky enough to be so left open to continuation, as well as being satisfying enough to have the power to let its fandom carry it on, extending the limbo of happiness for just a while longer. Fandoms like Undertale and Cuphead have managed to achieve this. But, even then, eventually, people will get bored, and the story or series will be left to rot once again.

      Lmao what, any story can be ended in a satisfying way,it just requires actual writing skills, wanting more and more of a story that had a great and solidified ending is just a sign of immaturity and weird obsession with this story
      Btw Undertale AUs are absolute garbage, there are some decent AUs here and there(and even then, just decent as concepts) but others make me cringe from the bottom of my soul

    One of the major reasons I prefer the manga over the anime is that the characters in the manga are allowed to have real arcs. Their stories end. While the series itself is ongoing, the individual protagonists have a beginning, middle, and end to all of their stories. Occasionally they will be brought back as part of the supporting cast, but that is rare and reserved for major events.
