    My favorite scene. In the shot at 0:35 you can see the parallel between them and how they mirror each other, nearly looking identical

    Mariko and Ochiba: *have a deeply intense and emotional conversation about trust and lost sisterhood*
    Blackthorne: _Should...should I leave? I have no idea what they're saying, but this seems WAY too personal for me to be here._

    This is when Ochiba realized she is smaller than Mariko. Ochiba could have a stronger grip on Osaka castle's Samurai when Taiko was still alive. Look at how Mariko commanded her Samurai in the attempt to leave Osaka castle.

    Spoiler alert
    this scene here carries a way more important weight than it lets on. Ochiba crying from the state of their current relationship implies that deep down inside, she still cares deeply for Mariko and regarded her as her own sister still, despite their troubled and complicated history.
    Then, in the end, when Mariko recited that poem to her about accepting death and a fallen flower, she finally understood what Mariko intended to do and realized that there is nothing she can do to help her nor fight against it. Hence, she knew that in the end, people will lose respect for Ishido and this in the end will turn the tides against him in Toranaga's favor and that's why she decided to send that letter to Toranaga in the end, effectively ending the battle even before the war begin.
    Toranaga and Ochiba were both a brilliant players in this game, they were hundreds of steps ahead of everyone else.

    • @thecollector6746
      @thecollector6746 Před 25 dny

      She is a liar and obvious manipulator and Ishido is too addled with ambition and lust to see the obvious. She isn't doing this for her Son, she is doing this because she desires to rule as the first female Shogun by proxy. In her mind, once she is done with Toranaga, she will eventually find some reason to be rid of Ishido...but unfortunately for her she and her Son this isn't how it will all play out.

      I agree; there is truth in Lady Ochiba's words. It could be argued that Mariko acknowledges some of that when she chooses to shut down the conversation rather than answer the question, "How will piercing your heart protect your son?". Ochiba is trying to save Mariko by challenging her perspective, but her old friend has made up her mind.

    More scenes not in the book. Not sure why they felt the need to create the conflict between the two. I'm guessing they used the conflict between Evelyn O'Connell and Anck-su-namun in the movie The Mummy Returns as their model.

      I watch them for the visual and casting achievements, which are pretty stunning. Buntaro and Gyoko are particularly well acted. Yabu and Ishido have their ups and down. I criticize them for the storyline that departs so greatly from the book.
